Did you know Bonnaroo '09 was the last show the Beastie's played before Adam got too sick? I wasn't aware of that and in honor here's the one vid I got from that show. Have to think it was the last time they played No Sleep till Brooklyn..
RIP Adam Yauch, aka MCA. Your music will be loved for generations to come.
I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high.
Very sad news indeed. I still remember the first time I ever heard The Beastie Boys. Twas in the infant days of napster and I downloaded "Girls" after hearin' it at school and immediately fell in love. Kinda regret not catchin' their set at 'Roo now...but David Byrne is one of my all time favorite artists. Time to go play some Hello Nasty...
This really is heartbreaking. When I heard early yesterday, I literally yelled, "NO WAYYY!" from my desk, loud enough for everyone in the office to hear.
I can only be happy that they managed to produce Hot Sauce Committee Part II before he passed away. I know they struggled a ton to produce it due to his cancer, but I'm hoping he was proud of that accomplishment.
I was a radio host when I lived in Pittsburgh and I wrote album reviews for the station's website. HSCPII was one of them. In my dark moment, I had to revisit the album review for some comfort and stable reality. It was good closure for me.
Damnit I pretty much dislike Coldplay but hell if that wasn't touchin' as all get out. Strangely enough that was the bit that really had it sink in fer me. Got me all teared up.
RIP its soo sad that he is gone. i was sooo close to seeing them a few years back during the all points west festival. i happened to win tickets to the fest on the radio. there was a last minute cancellation due to news of his cancer that he had discovered just a few days before the fest. i had work that day so i had just got there in time to see the headliners. vampire weekend, yeah yeah yeahs, and the man who filled in for the beastie boys JAY-Z!! he made us wait mad long for his set to start we were waiting at least 25 min when a coundown finally came up on the big screen projector.... a 10 minute coundown, second by second. it was agonizing. but when he came out, it was electric! he jumped on to stage singing "no sleep till brooklyn" and it was fantastic! even though it was raining and usually grassy park had turned into one great mudbowl, no one seemed to care. still wish i had gotten the chance to see them earlier though. RIP MCA, you were taken from us way to early!
I've never listened to an album more than I have Hello Nasty. Literally hundreds of spins. Beastie Boys were one of the biggest parts of my life from about 12-16 and I still love them. God damn. So hard to hear. I'm really glad so many of y'all got to see their last show and have such great things to say about MCA. I wrote about my discovery of Hello Nasty and how it helped me feel like I wasn't such an awkward, dorky kid. growing up. If you're interested:
"In the darkness hundreds of glowsticks streaked the air like tracer shots in war. Giant inflatables bounced over dozens of light sabers pointed skyward. Stuffed animals impaled on sticks danced above the hot crowds, puppeted by someone just given ecstasy by a friend made seconds before."
They were getting set to tour again this summer too.
This makes the roo show in 09 one of the last they ever all played together.
I'm pretty sure that it was their last show, becuase they cancelled their lolla show that year.
First CD I purchased as a kid was License to Ill. They aren't my favorite band of all time, but they are the only band that I began listening to as a kid and still love to this day.
Thanks for making my eyes water and me liking cold play all in the same video.
Not sure what else to say. 8th grade Licensed to Ill and they had me at "Wiffle Ball Bat". It would take a lot to get me on the dance floor at the club, it was either the right amount of alcohol or Brass Monkey, which I guess brass monkey is the right amount of alcohol. Either way, Brass Monkey=Ass Shakin'!
The Beasties were the band on the 09 lineup that pushed my wife and I to go to our first Bonnaroo. I had tix to see them to other shows, but life got in the way, and I had never seen them live. They were the one band whose music was with me through out my life. I feel so fortunate for making that decision to go to Roo for many reasons, but knowing I got to see the Beasties just before it ended makes it feel beyond special.
