Saw Drive-By Truckers and Megafaun do a joint cover of The Weight tonight. Needless to say, I had tears in my eyes. That's my favorite song of all time.
That sounds amazing. I was lucky enough to go to a Ramble in 2010 and The DBTs were the opener. It was awesome watching the entire band standing right off to the side for Levon's entire set as excited as everyone in the audience to be there.
I hope that something like the Rambles continue in Levon's memory, obviously they will never be the same, but it was always about the music and that could continue on.

I pulled up a couple of clips on youtube last night from his 2008 set at Bonnaroo. I will never forget his great smile. I agree that it would be wonderful for his family to continue with the Ramble tradition. I actually considered a pilgrimage to see Levon in Woodstock this year, but kept putting it off.

Losing Levon is tougher than I expected. I wanted to add a couple of points to the discussion:
1. Some rock critic (I forget who -- Google it if necessary) described Levon as "the only drummer who could make you cry"
2. There are some great performances in The Last Waltz and it's shot beautifully (shooting a concert with multiple 35mm cameras was unheard of). But it's a bit ironic to watch it to memorialize Levon because he flat out hated it. He thought that it idolized Robbie Robertson - with his makeup and expensive haircut -- to the exclusion of the rest of the band. There was a lot of bad blood between those two. Levon thought he deserved some of the songwriting credit.

The animosity is well-documented and my speculation is that Robbie Robertson garnered much more of the songwriting credit than he deserved. I always felt that The Band's song creation process was pretty collaborative. The quality of Robertson's work as a solo artist seems to bear that out. When they broke away from Ronnie Hawkins they didn't call their new band Robbie and the Hawks. Obviously Levon was the leader and the music created by The Band would never have been as critically acclaimed with out his guidance.
I dunno if I ever told this story, but I met Levon once at the Rambler in his barn. I don't play any instruments, don't sing, just love music and Levon has been a part of my life since as long as I can remember. My Dad's first text after he heard was "it feels like I've lost a life long friend.". But Levon one-on-one was the nicest person I've ever spoken to. Knowing what I know now, I am almost positive he was already battling cancer, but the guy was just the happiest person you'd ever have the pleasure of talking to. He was friendly, thought the fact my family as a whole went to the show was fantastic, and was gracious that 3 generations of my family loved his music. My brother is a drummer, so Levon talked for a pretty long time with him about playing, and God only knows what my brother took away from that conversation.
I dunno why I felt I needed to vent that, but it sucks when anyone who was a big part of my musical upbringing passes away, and aside from the Beatles, Levon was probably the most listened to artist in my house growing up.
I never talked to him but I did shake his hand and saw plenty of shows and he really was one of the happiest and most gracious people you could ever want to meet.

I spent an afternoon in woodstock on my four month long trip around the country, but didn't have time to see everything. I was hoping to make it back up there and go to a Ramble. At least I did get to see almost his whole set at Roo. The Levon tributes at Wannee were my favorite parts of the shows.

Yea I had Diamond Doves message me on facebook to promote the Felice Brothers and others as playing this show. Wish I could go to it.
Oops. Actually the Diamond Doves message was for some other tribute they're doing in upstate NY for Levon. This show looks new to me. If my money is in order I may try to attend this.....close to Roo though.
