Flanz, I'm not an expert on Sanchez's contract...but don't the Jets have to pay a penalty on top of Sanchez's $8.75 mill if they decide to trade him? I know if they cut him its a cap hit of $17 mill or something like that. But I think there is a penalty if he's traded as well. No?
Mark's cap # for next year is $12.8 mil (that goes over $14m with bonuses), but his actual salary (factoring in a $500k roster bonus) is $8.75. If he's cut it's $17.15 mil of dead money. If he's traded his cap # rises because the remaining cap hit for his signing bonus accelerates and counts against the Jets' cap this year. That # would be about $12 million total. I say they can pay him a bonus because it will make him more attractive to another team, since it lowers his actual 2013 salary, which is what his new team will be responsible for since the team acquiring a player in a trade doesn't pay any of the original signing bonus $.
Basically....it beats the hell out of paying the full $17 mil.
If he's still on the team his cap # is going to really hurt and the Jets may force him to restructure his actual salary down to $715k (the minimum for someone with his experience) so his cap $ goes from $12m to $6m and his cap # in 2014 rises from $4m to $10m. This obviously isn't ideal and forces the Jets to keep him for 2013, but their cap is in way better shape in 2014. But that's also not really taking into account Revis' new deal or Wilkersons' likely new deal.
The Jets can get rid of him, but it will cost money no matter how they do it. I'm just hoping they do the one way that gives them the smallest cap hit, and that's through a trade.
This is all over the radio. NY media sucks. Aren't the Giants like playing for a playoff spot on Sunday or something?
NY media does suck. I can assure you that no Jets fan cares about Tim Tebow's 2013 hopes and dreams, they just want him off the team. Thank god he costs nothing to cut, but they're going to dangle him in front of jacksonville for a pick with a playing time escalator and hope for the best.
It'll be interesting to see how the Giants look, that's a tough environment and Diehl is pretty turrible (Locklear going down really hurts). They're going to attack him so he better be ready to step up.
I'm still expecting the Lions to beat the Bears even if it's completely irrational, opening up the 6 spot for the Giants if the Vikings lose to the Pack next week. Giants will then go into Lambeau and beat the Packers in round 1, then beat the 49ers in San Fran round 2.

I don't think the Giants could beat an arena league team right now. At least they only need to play better on offense, defense and special teams. It's just those three phases of the game they need to work on. They're gassed.
You're all talking about it so much that it's going to be a reverse jinx.
No it's not. Wake up to the realization that the Giants, for all intents and purposes, suck.
I came to that conclusion about the Jets weeks ago, the earlier you start coping the better.
As for Revis, you're right that Jets fans don't want to trade him. I don't know why that makes them irrational, since he IS the best CB since Deion and he was the best overall defensive player in the league before tearing his ACL. The Jets have assembled (without anyone realizing it) the foundation for a ridiculous defense. They need an edge rusher and for Kyle Wilson to not be guarding primary options. Revis coming back accomplishes the latter, the former will be done in the draft.
Trading Revis now, when his value is literally the lowest it has ever been since joining the NFL ranks, would be such poor mismanagement that if Tanny still does have his job at that point, I'd start calling for it. Oh, I know "better you get something than nothing, right?" No. Because one Darrelle Revis 100% season is so above and beyond whatever crap rookie you'd have that the season's success/failure could very well rest on that trade. I like watching Revis befuddle and infuriate opposing elite WR's. It's truly remarkable.
For a point of reference: Revis held Calvin Johnson, who just set the record for yards in a season, to one catch and 13 yards. And that wasn't a fluke. I'm not in the "pay him whatever he wants" camp, but a deal that averages out to $14-14.5m is acceptable given the player and how Rex altered his defense to take into account that Revis will literally own 33% of the field all game and it'll turn into Death Valley for QB's.
Juggs, I punched my ticket for the "I hope Seattle destroys everyone in the playoffs" train. They're so incredibly fun to watch and they're by far the most likable playoff team. And watching my 4 year old cousin Makenna root for Beast Mode because the two share an affinity for Skittles is something to behold (I doubt she knows anything about football, but when he runs over people she goes nuts).

I also think trading Revis would be a mistake and if they actually do trade him, it'll make it pretty difficult to still root for this team, although I'm sure my idiotic brain will still make me root for them regardless of what they do. However, they need to pay Revis and get this fiasco straightened out in the offseason. They cannot afford another holdout or even another threat of one.
The Jets are hard pressed for cash though, with Sanchez's ridiculous contract, among many others. I don't see how the Jets will be able to give Revis that long term contract that he deserves, unless it's structured where it pays out more towards the end. Would Revis go for that? Would he even consider resigning with a team in such disarray? The Jets need to keep him and need to get this solved this offseason, but honestly I have a hard time seeing how both of those things can happen.
I am also very stupid when it comes to economics and salary caps and all that stuff in sports (or in life in general) so I'm sure I'm not realizing something that's probably fairly obvious.

Well, I don't know how "obvious" this stuff is, because I spend hours upon hours writing about this stuff (I pitch in for a Jets blog and have daily email correspondence with their cap expert - who knows the cap better than some GM's, I'm convinced), but the Jets are going to cut $28 million the first day of free agency by cutting Pace, Scott, Jason Smith, and Tebow. You actually get a better cap savings on Tebow if you trade him, but that's not likely to happen.
You can structure Revis' contract so the big cap hit is in 2014, when the Jets have a MUCH better cap situation than 2013 and it wouldn't kill the chance to sign an elite player in 2014.
I think Sanchez's extension is what gets Tanny fired. Not Tebow, not the offensive personnel (better than people give it credit for), but because he missed on the Sanchez pick and then extended his contract after his worst season (I don't want to hear about 2011 stats vs. other years, he dropped back to pass way more that season than previous seasons). That extension kind of handcuffs the Jets as far as impact signings. They're going to need to hope to find another Landry-type of player looking to prove himself (Landry is gone, btw, he wants $7-$10m annually for a barely-average player......good luck, Laron).
But if priority #1 is to sign Revis, they can get it done. I just hope that's not priority #1 since it'll be a long process.

When the Giants were rolling they had a killer pass attack. It was essentially the only thing they had going for them offensively. That dynamic has simply disappeared and I'm not sure why. My guess is that Nicks' injury situation has been worse than was reported and the O-line has too many holes. Baas has sucked since they signed him, Snee has been hurt and Diehl is old. The defense for the most part has been average at best and awful at most times. They need an infusion of youth at too many positions and as bleak as 2012 has been 2013 doesn't look to be stellar either.
I agree. I think the OL is the biggest thing holding back the offense (it's not like they're lacking talent at the other spots). The erosion of Corey Webster has been pretty unexpected. He was never a truly elite player, but he was certainly above average.
I hope I'm not alone in pondering the impact of the Seahawks' Fail Mary "win" on the NFC playoffs.
Packers would still conceivably have a shot at tying Falcons for best conference record. Packers would be a more comfortable 1.5 games ahead of the 49ers instead of the current 0.5... they'd be #2 at worst had there been a correct call, without #3 seed being a possibility. The 49ers would have NFC West locked up by now, despite last night's game. I'm not exactly sure how the tiebreakers would fall if the Fail Mary were called correctly, but the Vikings & Bears would both share a record with the Seahawks at this point. Redskins loss next week would further complicate that.
I know I'm a biased Packer fan. They stole a win from us. But I'm also not cool with another worthy team missing out on a playoff slot because of it. Which, at this point, still seems a possibility.

I don't think it'll knock anyone else out. The Seahawks beat both the Bears and Vikings so they'd own any potential tiebreaker. I can't imagine the Rams beating the Seahawks or the Cards beating the 49ers, so the Seahawks would have the 5 seed regardless of that MNF game. Miraculously, if the Packers win next week that game won't really affect anything at all (Bucs have been so terrible, if Atlanta played all their starters they wouldn't lose to Tampa at home).
Well, if those 3 teams were to tie, the Vikings/Bears tiebreak happens before a 3-way tie-breaker. So, if those 3 were tied at this moment with that GB win being a loss, you tie-break the Vikings/Bears first, with the Vikes winning that due to division record.
Vikings vs. Seattle straight up for the #5 spot. Seattle beat them head-to-head, so Seattle is still the 5 seed.
That was a bit farther than I'd thought into it. But if Redskins lose to the Cowboys & wind up with same record, don't they have priority over the Vikings for a wild card?

I guessed the Vikes to win 6 games this year. Probably won't make it out of Green Bay next week, but making the playoffs is awesome.
Peterson for MVP. The "run Peterson as much as possible" game plan has been well advertised, and still no one can stop him. Very true that without Peterson or Blair Walsh, we would be nothing.

I don't know if you caught it, but they put together a video package during the game today of times the Packers had a player in position who totally failed to stop AP. Dude is ridiculous.
