Looking at that poster, I made the right call. Bonnaroo is a better festival that weekend. Seriously.
That's the final line up for Porto. There will be some small names but nothing huge.
Yes, but still that festival needs to change its dates. How long has this been going on? Where they've been taking bands away from Bonnaroo on that same weekend? I can't believe I didn't know about it.
This is the first year. The other one, San Miguel has been going on for 10 years now in some shape or form. Typically, I think, U.S. bands either start or finish their tours there.

not being sarcastic i'm fairly upset about these festivals stealing acts i wanted to see, including EDC and Starscape, which also go on during Roo

Here's an idea I've been floating around. What if Bonnaroo was held about two week's earlier? It'd be less hot and it would compete with less festivals for artists.

That's the game though. Figuring out who can play and who can't. I was shocked to see Black Lips and War On Drugs playing both. That's why I'm not going to play that game anymore.
They proved to me this year that it doesn't matter.
It pisses me off to NO END that all these other festivals like Primavera and Coachella are getting these quacking STELLAR bands to play and we're getting all the garbage.
Seriously, they get Michael Gira, Spiritualized, Jeff Mangum, Shellac, The Weeknd, OFF!.....
And we get all this corporate "indie" nonsense like fun., Temper Trap, Foster The People, Young The Giant...The kinda bands that get their one good song on a commercial and then fade away after a year.

Whoa whoa whoa.... Garbage?? I think you need to take another looooong look at that line-up, my friend. We have just as many amazing acts as either of those festivals, some just aren't quite as well known as say At the Drive-In.
I will admit that there are plenty of bands that I wish were playing Roo, but to call what we have garbage is pretty silly

Bonnaroo has 3 times as many bands as Primavera, so there's going to be stuff you don't like. Don't get me wrong, I hate fun and FTP and my karma has suffered for my rampages on them, but Primavera doesn't have the Beach Boys, or Black Star, or Darondo, or Flying Lotus.
Bonnaroo isn't aggressive with up and coming indie bands, never has been. They have a lot more tickets to sell than I assume Primavera does, so they probably feel they can't take risks. That's just the nature of the fest.

Nice explanation. Your karma shouldn't suffer for putting how you feel about a band on the table. We all do it. That's kind of the point of the board.

Way more. Almost 50k+ more to be a bit more in the numbers. A least the Barcelona one at least. They also have what rounds out to be over 200 bands but it's still a boutique festival. It's catered to a very specific crowd and it still won't sell out.
That's why. There are other Eurofests that cater to different tastes.

Yeah I guess we got Bad Brains... It's just bothersome to see up-and-comers like Death Grips and The Weeknd on other fest's undercards and then see all the corporate sponsored up-and-comers like Kimbra and fun on our lineup. I mean, can't the folks that run Roo' see that these bands are just trendy commercialized groups that are gonna be TOTALLY irrelevant in a few months?
Man, that old man's face really manages to calm me down.

Of course, as I defend Bonnaroo I'm totally sitting here plotting my trip to Porto next summer..

I tend to agree with you. The biggest problem with what you're proposing is that Bonnaroo isn't that kind of festival. There's too much variety in the kind of acts they book to have the lineup look like a Coachella. We might get a few of the acts you're talking about, but our undercard is just never going to look like a Coachella or Primavera. But to me they make up for that by not having a curfew.

I'm not a fan, but fun sold out a venue in Pittsburgh within 3 hours of tickets going on sale a few weeks ago... I'd say they're a little more than a corporate band.

Jonas Brothers tickets used to sell out arena show in 30 seconds, but that doesn't mean they weren't corporate.
I actually enjoyed fun.'s first album, but this new one uses waaaay too many pop conventions.

I wish they had Girls, Weeknd, M83, and Cloud Nothings but...
In 2006 I was pissed there weren't enough JAMBANDS
in 2009 it was a perfect ratio
The past two years I've been furious about the lack of up and comers.
This year isn't as quite as good as '09 but they covered the bases pretty well
In the end, tastes change and a lot of "up and comers" aren't so hot live which has seemed to be an important part of putting the lineup together over the years.

Girls at 2pm on the Which Stage when it's too hot to move and your physically incapable of doing anything other than listen .... would have been awesome.

I'm kind of surprised hearing Bonnaroo doesn't get enough indie bands. They have never had more on a lineup than this year's. I love Bonnaroo because they get so many different genres. I would be disappointed if they took the getting all of the up-and-coming indie bands route and become less diverse.

Are you kidding me? You don't think Coachella is just as "commercialized". Look at their headliners this year. The Black Keys have done more commercials in the past 3 years, than all those bands you listed combined. Snoop Dogg endorses every product under the sun (Snoop DeVille???). What does that have to do with how good they are, or what kind of show they put on? I'd still want them on the Bonnaroo lineup again.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure Temper Trap and Foster the People have played Coachella in years past, so apparently they haven't faded away. If you're looking for bands that haven't sold their souls to corporations yet, cafe acts will be announced in the next couple weeks

I think you are confusing corporate new alt rock with indie.
And wow, you're like a walking, talking infomercial to turn people away from Pearl Jam and Ohio State, aren't you? Before you started posting here I quite liked Pearl Jam and was indifferent towards OSU, now I find myself wishing that Eddie Vedder falls down a mine shaft or that Columbus is infested with locusts

I think Coachella really went all in on this year. They knew they had to convince the public they deserved to have the festival two weeks in a row and they did that. Every level of music lover snob or hipster can be satisfied with something on that line-up.
However, I think in years past, including 2011, their line-up has fallen short of the high bar they've set for themselves. They went all-in this year. Jeff Mangum, Godspeed, Dr. Dre, Justice, DJ Shadow, I could go on and on and on. But can they sustain it every year. My feeling is results may vary and Bonnaroo also did very well this year, maybe one of the best line-ups they've ever had.
And Coachella set lists for anyone not headlining are under an hour. And their curfew is what, 1?
Sure it hurts not to get Dr. Dre or Justice or Godspeed. I'm thankful I don't really like ATDI or Neutral Milk Hotel because I would probably be a lot more butthurt if that was the case.
LUCKILY, I do like The Beach Boys, BlackStar, The Word, Flogging Molly, Ludacris, Puscifer and about 10 others on Roo's line-up that are nowhere to be seen at Coachella. It's all a matter of audience and maybe some people are going to the wrong festival?

Hell, indie means independent label. In that case, you should be happy with Bonnaroo since they get cafe acts. Great bands that need exposure. There seems to be no right definition to indie. We're all on the same page when we talk about bluegrass or metal. Indie is an enigma.
Sorry, I don't want to start a defining genre conversation. We have had enough conversations on this board arguing about genres. Genres are fluid. It was more of me bitching about the number of Neon Trees on this line up. There are probably about 3 or 4 bands that I would put in the Neon Trees category this year.

Yeah I don't either. Fun. definitely falls in that neon trees category, but the others you listed earlier don't imo. I see them continuing on strong and coming out with some new unique albums that aren't one hit wonders. agree to degree
