Although the servers got hit hard and tiers 1-4 sold out almost instantly, I still don't know if this year is going to sell out as quickly as last year (or at all). I think the extra voracity of scalpers this year is causing this extra panic and the demand is overstated.
Last year had a lot of mainstream draw with Em, Wayne, Mumford, and PL/Bassnectar. This year the only real mainstream draws are the Chili Peppers, Skrillex, and Ludacris (and no i'm not going to count Radiohead).
A lot of people i've talked to who were thinking about going this year were disappointed in the lineup and decided not to go after all. Granted this lineup is awesome for the Inforoo crowd and fans of indie music, but I think the lineup is a bit less diverse and a little less mainstream this year. Not to mention RH and RHCP are doing extensive tours and many may opt to just see them locally instead of camp out for 4 days to see them.

We'll see. This will be interesting.
This is a really good post actually. I had a friend in that exact situation: he was thinking of going, but decided not to once the lineup came out. The only real draws for him were RHCP, Beach Boys, Ben Folds Five, and maybe Radiohead (he's only a casual fan). But considering we already have tickets to see RHCP, and Beach Boys are also coming here for cheaper than expected (not to mention Radiohead coming in 2 days, but he doesn't like them enough to pay more than $30).
There is no real "holy ship!" act this year, as much as I like the lineup. All of the main acts are doing huge tours anyways, and there aren't that many big acts to begin with in the first place. Phish is the only exclusive, and I'm pretty sure they still have a summer tour to announce.
I'm still super psyched to go, and there's a bunch of acts I'm excited for, but I don't think any of those points are invalid. Side note: you could add Foster the People to mainstream acts too, although that still isn't a lot.

I thought Radiohead was the "holy ship" band this year... It's not the Rolling Stones or anything, but their live shows are amazing! I can't wait... I'm also digging a lot of the bands of the list I haven't heard of, looking forward to wondering around and going where ever my ear takes me : )

They definitely are the holy s*** band this year...for inforooers and fans of indie music. Most of the general public still have never really listened to Radiohead or aren't big fans. Ask most people about Radiohead and they'll say "Oh yeah the band with that "Creep" song?

Maybe that is what the average person would say but not the average Bonnaroo attendee. The majority of people who enjoy music enough to go to Bonnaroo are far more aware of real music than that.

In Rainbows was a big accessible hit for Radiohead. I know a lot of people who only know that album.
My thought is that it will sell out shortly after the artist additions.

I'm late to the show, but thanks Insider. I love you! No, really. Anyway, wouldn't the lineup look totally different with NYCH on the top line?
In terms of commercial draw, I do think last year was bigger, but this is a huge lineup for a lot of indie fans and festival fans. A couple of solid add, however, and I think it will appeal to the masses.

Haven't been on here since the day after the line up came out i believe. Afghanistan has been a b*tch. No internet access didn't help at all; having WiFi in the hotel was so tempting.. I'm really not looking forward to getting anything "big" "new" or "exciting" with the artists additions. I believe it'll be a bit better than it was in '11 but nothing too special. I'm pulling for OFWGKTA, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros and Civil Civic.

Apologize for being late to the party here but I just wanted to throw in my two cents.
Since it seems AC was prepared to sign NYCH, that has to mean that they have to have a lot of money left over if they can still afford to sign a headlining-type act. I don't usually pay attention to people who bring up the "Bonnaroo has so much/not enough money" argument but this actually got me excited. Roo still has enough funds to bring in a pretty big name or two (whether it be NYCH, Jack White or someone else). Also, if they don't bring in another big name they can sign several smaller but still solid acts.
Now do I think that either of these scenarios will happen? Probably not. I'm guessing that Roo always has a lot of money left over. All I'm saying is that the situation is favorable. I love the lineup and honestly don't care if anyone gets added. I'm just trying to stay excited and optimistic.

I have a feeling based on this Neil Young info and the lack of a solid mid tier that this will be one of the best rounds of additions Roo has ever seen.

The money could come into play if this was all pre-lineup release, but unless they are experiencing lackluster ticket sales, which I doubt, chances are they will just roll with what they have and start working towards next year.

I am tempted to think along these lines as well...but keep in mind that they want repeat business, not just one sellout year. By adding some solid additions, it could make the experience that much better for many people, and therefore ensure that they come back to the farm again.
Bonnaroo just sent out an email that kind of confirms what I was thinking. They said in the email "we had one of our most successful on-sales so far"
No doubt that the sale went well, but I don't think it was this crazy "fastest of all time" thing that everyone has been saying. I think they still have a ways to go before selling out.

I'm being stubbornly optimistic here
People will come back in 2013 if they like the 2013 lineup, not if they liked the 2012 lineup.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

So what happened, then? Did the servers just shit the bed during the first on-sale for some reason?

Scalpers raping the servers.
You'd think programmers would have learned to deal with scalpers a long time ago. Is there anything about this year's festival that makes it more a target of scalpers than previous years? Looking at the headliners, I don't see any bands with super-megadraw power that would entice a scalper deluge.

If you haven't noticed, scalping activity is at an unprecedented level lately...for what reason, I'm not sure. It's not crazy to think it has a lot to do with the ticket sale fiasco.

But then why did Bonnaroo have problems and not other big festivals like Coachella?

I think it was a combination of things; The 15-minute time limit combined with the number of upgrade options, which slows processing down tremendously if you decide to change your mind about an option after you've seen the bill total, then go back to deselect the option...
The options might give scalpers an unintended advantage, since they're only going for simple GA, and whip through the process the quickest.
IIRC Coachella did have some scalping issues which helped lead to the sellout
I see. But it didn't shut down the selling, right? People weren't having the same amount of problems buying tickets were they? I don't know anything about Coachella sales.

Who buys a Bonnaroo ticket from a scalper? Seriously? Has anyone ever heard of this? If it sells out, it's much easier to just wait until the end of May or so when stuff inevitably comes up and some people have to sell their ticket and just get one at face value from somebody looking to unload. I don't know why the scalpers even bother.

There're always a few people trolling the traffic line trying to sell a ticket or two. Always thought they got stuck with an extra 'cause a friend couldn't make it.

I wouldn't buy a festival ticket from a scalper and I generally avoid scalpers for everything. The only times I've gotten them is when a group of me and my friends go to a show and only one of them doesn't have a ticket....then we look for people that have extras outside the venue.
I don't get from stubhub or other things like that. Craigslist works fine for the most part.
