Thanks for posting it. Keep it up. Hope I can make it down this year to see Phish. They were a true highlight of 2009 (and Trey has been involved in some other highlights of mine throughout the years).
For the record this thread has gotten a lot more love than I thought it would.
Thanks guys

Never listened to phish before and I think i like them, i listened to the entire Billy Breathes album and really enjoyed it. Thanks for the encouragement to listen to something "new'.
Just curious, if you were to rank, say, your 5 favorite Phish albums, what would the order look like?
again i'm not jess, but if it pleases the thread:
1. Story of the Ghost 2. Rift 3. Junta 4. Farmhouse 5. Billy Breathes
in my experience Phish fans almost unanimously put Rift as #1, because it is a really good album and chock full of great songs. Even if Story of the Ghost isn't as strong an album song for song, I love the way they all fit together. It was also the first Phish studio album I owned, and I remember how odd and mysterious it was when I first got it. I didn't love it right away but kept listening over and over till it clicked.
Farmhouse is also not generally a fan favorite, but I first saw Phish live in 2000 which was the Farmhouse-era, so everywhere I went all my friends were playing this album and shows with songs from this album. lots of fond memories.
Outside of studio releases, A Live One is required listening for anyone getting into Phish. it was the second Phish album I bought after Ghost.
I like Rift mainly because it tells a story. You really do have to sit down ans listen to the whole thing though, like Tommy, or Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
I had a ticket to see phish new years 2009 and sold it. Basically none of my friends wanted to go and I didn't want to spend new years alone But new years turned out lame and i wish i had gone
It was a 4 night run though and I caught the first 2 nights. Good times indeed, but both were mediocre in comparison the face melting set I saw at bonnaroo
In the 1990s, I went from being into the Madchester scene into Shoegaze into indie rock, primarily Pavement and Sebadoh and their ilk. Around that time I remember bumping into an old high school friend, whose taste in music I had greatly admired, and being crestfallen when he asked, "Have you heard Phish? They're amazing." I honestly felt, at the time, like it was "An Invasion of the Body Snatchers" moment, like, "What in the Hell happened to this guy? He used to be cool and listen to Husker Du!" I laugh at my reaction now, after spending most of the last decade loving Phish. In fact, I've seen them 15 times and loved every minute of every live show. Personally, I think there is a stigma attached to them. People sometimes don't give the songwriting and musicianship a chance because they dismiss it as "hippy" music defined by a ton of noodling/rambling instrumentals. Having set aside all my preconceived notions and given them a chance around the time of the Farmhouse album, I now appreciate their ability to write catchy melodies - and that comes off both on their studio albums and in a live setting. Yes, you might hear a 15 minute Divided Sky, but you also are likely to hear a bunch of much shorter songs, like the previously mentioned Farmhouse, Prince Caspian, Down with Disease, Bouncing Around the Room. ... I also think they don't fit into one genre; they straddle a bunch, like alternative rock, prog rock, psych rock, etc., etc. All I'm saying with this rambling post is give Phish - or any other band, for that matter - a chance before you write them off based on preconceived notions about their sound or fanbase or both. In short, don't be the mostly-shallow indie-rock snob klimfactor from the early to late 1990s.
I stand by my belief that Phish was at their peak from around late Fall 1996 until the Island Tour in 1998. That entire 18 month span was sublime.
And I hate when people are all "oh, yeah, [band x] used to be so great, they're not anymore, you shoulda seen them back in the day," but that's kind of how I feel about Phish. I believe that they're still good at what they do, but the only music of theirs I find listening to on any regular basis these days are shows from that era. I really just liked that sound/style.
I was on tour Summer 95-97, and it was good stuff. I am not totally convinced that it was that much better than now. Some of the new songs/albums are not my favorite, but they are still capable of greatness in 3.0 .
I don't go to near as many shows these days with a GF and two kids. However the Cincinnati 09 shows, and the Aplharetta 2010 4th of July run, can stand up to anything else I have ever seen them do. I thought the 11.28.11 show was good, not great but it had a nice flow, and for my GF's first show it was ideal since it was a Tweezer show not one with a 34 minute YEM. What is you are missing from the old days?

I was too young and not into much music at the time so I never got a chance to see Phish until their reunion in '09. I was a fan though.
What I can say is this: They are amazing. They may not compare to 90's Phish but when you compare them to a lot of the live acts touring the country they stand out as one of the better live shows going (IMO at least...maybe I need to see more).
I love the few shows I have seen and I bet they were better back then but they are still pretty damn great now.
