Jess,
Excited for Phish, but since we have some time before June, do you mind explaining some the (for lack of better term...) antics that go on during a show?
For example I had a friend that freaked out at the NYE run last year because they came in on a hot dog. I've heard of some fans getting mad if you throw glowsticks during the wrong portion of YEM. I assume these have more to do with the fans than the band, but do you mind giving a few example of why these things matter???
If only there existed a time machine where it could be 1997 again and Phish was still in their prime. I just can't bring myself to fully enjoy Phish v. 3.0.
Really? I've been seeing them live since 1998 and I really don't see any difference in their shows now. I still feel like they put as much love and energy into their music and their shows as they did then. I don't like some of the newer music as much, but otherwise I don't see a difference.
Jess, awesome thread, thanks for this. I wish I could get some of my friends to even listen to one song, just one, to break them of their "Phish Sucks" mentality. Maybe I will ask them to read this.
I'm probably driving from NJ to Roo solo this year, mostly because Phish is playing. My friends who went with me last year are bailing because Phish is playing.
Also, great job using 12/28/11 as your examples. I couch toured that show (and 12/31) and the 12/28 MSG show was the best of the NYE run.
For people who don't like the long, drawn out, psychedelic jams of the past, they have really moved away from that, at least from the shows I've seen the past few years. I miss that at times but I do love what 3.0 has turned into.

I can't really speak to misplaced glowstick anger, some people take it more seriously than others. As far as antics go, they will do a NYE gag. Last year was a "Glee" version of Meatstick, then they disappeared, and came back riding a giant hot dog down from the roof of MSG. This year they were levitating audience members, and instruments during Steam.
If Phish and Radiohead are indeed headliners this year, what do you think the chances are of Phish covering Radiohead (e.g., from OK Computer).
I believe they have done one-off covers in the past, just not really sure how frequently or under what circumstances...
I would say 0.01% chance.
much more likely they just come out and play a rocking show.
someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think Phish has only done 1 non-Halloween "costume" set, and that was DSOTM. so the chances aren't good for one at bonnaroo.

I'm not Jess but I'll take a whack at this.
The hot dog was a big deal because they'd ridden out in that same hot dog at another MSG NYE show in the 90s. If I'm correct, the hot dog is actually in the rock and roll hall of fame now on display, so it was crazy they actually got the hot dog from the hall of fame and brought it back to the garden. However, these types of big "gags" as they are called are typically reserved for NYE shows. Regular shows certainly can have there fill of shenanigans, but nothing huge like the hot dog bit. Digging deeper, IIRC the hot dog bit was a parody to Bill Graham riding a big RYO cigarette above the crowd at a grateful dead show at winterland.
I've never heard of fans getting mad specifically at people throwing glow sticks during a wrong part of a song. In general some long time fans tend to dislike the idea of a glow stick war altogether. Even though the vast majority of glow sticks thrown at shows are the soft kind, the possibility still exists that someone could get hurt.
The traditional glow stick war song is Harry Hood. The first glow stick war occurred during Harry Hood at one of Phish's 90s festivals, The Grent Went. Having said that, glow stick wars are liable to pop up at any time. Maze, Bowie, YEM are all big glow stick war songs. The BEST glowstick wars, IMO happen in a big field. The glow stick explosions at Festival 9 in Indio during Loving Cup and Tweeprise are some of the highlights of my Phish 3.0 experience. No doubt, gets me all goosebumpy just thinking about it! sorry for any weird syntax issues I had to type this in my work email, email it to my phone, then copy and paste it into safari. yes we are very slow right now.

I went to Phish on the sunday of Bonnaroo 09 with very low expectations. I hadn't liked anything I heard from the band, and admittedly didn't "get it". I was going mostly for the light show, tbh. Had they not played unopposed I probably would've made the grave mistake of skipping it, (I almost even left early sunday.)
I was admittedly in an altered state, but it turned out to be one of the all time greatest shows of my entire life (easily in the top 10, might even crunch into the top 5) It was a religious experience and a musical awakening. It brought me to open my mind and greatly appreciate an entire new genre of music.
I still listen to the recordings of that show pretty often. Never gets old.

I would put this percentage chance much higher, like 25%. Though they've never covered Radiohead, Mike has, and it wouldn't be too unlikely that they pull one out...could just as easily be a Chili Peppers jam. Or Higher Ground?

If they play late night after Radiohead, I could see Thom joining them for one or two songs. Karma Police maybe, or something like that. I doubt they would cover Radiohead without a sit in.
Has anyone heard the podcast series "Analyze Phish"? Two comedians: Harris Wittels (Phish fan) tries to sell Scott Aukerman (Phish hater) on becoming a Phish fan by playing live and studio tracks. They've now gone through 4 episodes -- Really funny stuff, whether you like the band or not.
I have seen 43 Phish shows since '98 and have been to 7 of the 10 Bonnaroo's, But my biggest regret is missing '09. Phish is my favorite band and Bonnaroo is my favorite festival, and the opportunity to see Phish on the farm after missing the first one makes me feel as if the B-Roo Gods are smiling down upon me.
To see them close out the What Stage Sunday and to see all the people they will have in their listening grasp will truly be magical. It puts a smile on my face every time I think about it! 44th and 45th Phish Shows at Roo = SOOO READY!
I took a moment from my day, and wrapped it up in things Jess say, Nice Thread Jess!

Isn't Radiohead one of Trey's favorite bands? I could see a sit in from either side during either set if they both play the festival.

Has Radiohead ever had a sit in before? I think their shows are a little to orchestrated for something like that.

so everybody but one guy has at the very least resigned themselves to trying to enjoy phish? nice thread.
people looking to get into phish: Rift is the album you want if you want an album pretty much anything in the official Live Phish series is going to be outstanding and have great sound quality. my favorites are #2 and #9 if you like funk check out anything from the island tour - april 2-5, 1998 if you want to see the funniest thing phish has ever done check out the second set from june 17, 1994 (the night of the o.j. simpson chase) it's a classic.
i could go on and on but if you dont like phish after checking a few of those out it's probably time to give up.

bonnaroo 09 was my 4th phish show. i've seen 21 more since. they are a MUCH better band nowadays then they were in 09 (having only been back for a couple weeks plus a 3 night run that march).
superball this summer was the best weekend of my life, hands down. the bad was on fire.
jess, how were you not there? here is the mound you missed.
haters: check this out, only 8 minutes. skip to 6 mins or so to get the incredible (completely improvised) ending solo.
I had a ticket to see phish new years 2009 and sold it. Basically none of my friends wanted to go and I didn't want to spend new years alone But new years turned out lame and i wish i had gone
It was a 4 night run though and I caught the first 2 nights. Good times indeed, but both were mediocre in comparison the face melting set I saw at bonnaroo
