The last of the great composers of the early 20th century, Elliott Carter, died yesterday at the ripe old age of 103 (he was a few weeks from his 104th birthday).
He was a student of Charles Ives, and a contemporary of Henry Cowell and John Cage and Aaron Copeland and Arnold Schöenberg, etc. For the early, atonal avant garde, he was among the best. Carter was still composing prolifically into his 100's, still highly sought after for commissions, and his music still as challenging.
I'll be listening to Elliott Carter all day today.
I'm a very streaky listener as it is, but the weather getting colder always brings a run like this out of me. Plus I got a new car this weekend and it just feels right to cruise around with some classy tunes playing for a little while.
