Question time: On average, how many times have you listened to any given album in your collection? Of course your favorites will have a bunch, and there are some random ones in the back corner that almost never see the light of day. I personally tend to listen to a wide selection of albums, but not many plays for any given one. Without actually looking through them, I would guess most albums in my iTunes library have somewhere between 5-10 plays, with >20 plays being in the "loved albums" category, <5 plays being either new or neglected.

There are some records I spun probably almost everyday while I was in college. It's pretty crazy to think about.

Well nowadays I do most of my listening to new music via Spotify and I don't think they monitor number of personal plays (Which they should, I don't think it would be that hard). With all the new music I listen to I usually listen once straight through. When listening I make a log in a word doc of what I like about the particular album and favorite tracks from the album. I also have a spotify playlist entitled "New music from 2014" (I just started doing this in 2014) and will add a couple of my favorite tracks from each album into that playlist. Obviously my favorite albums get replayed as I feel, but many times I will just go to the Mew Music playlist and listen to it or use it as a guide to re-listen to albums I may have neglected at first.
Before Spotify and Inforoo my tastes in music were pretty limited. If I bought an album on iTunes or a CD from the store, it meant I really felt strongly about it and listened to it >20 times. I was in college so the money I had usually didn't go to buying music unless I "needed" the album.

I randomly started following some dude on instagram who is listening to a different record every day for 365 days. I need to do that. I get so focused on keeping up with new music I forget about what's already in my collection.

I had 35k minutes of music and 11k individual streams. Listened to Purity Ring, Foals, Alt-J, and Local Natives the most.
26,286 minutes of music, 7,139 individual streams. Listened to Mumford & Sons, The Neighborhood, and Dropkick Murphy's the most. Most listened to track: "Broken Crown" by Mumford.
(But I have to dispute the accuracy of this reporting, because I don't listen to Dropkick Murphy's enough for them to be my #3. I can think of at least 5 other artists I listened to more last year.)

If you register for Last.fm you can following your listening statistics on Spotify (plus iTunes) pretty closely. Day, Week, Month, Year, etc. Mine says I've listened to 82,000 songs in the past 8 years (that's low) 1,419 of which have been Spoon (also low).

Yea, if you want to keep track of your listens. Last.fm is the way to go.

its funny that i see this question today. Last night i was thinking about something along these lines. So, i went and created a few smart playlists. 1st on had 2 variables; 2014 Albums, and Less than 2 plays. Next one was all music with less than 3 plays, and another with 0 Plays. I tend to use this for 2 purposes, to revisit albums ive been neglecting, and to weed out albums i just dont care for or need taking up space on my ipod. Unfortunately, when i bought my new mac, the ratings and play counts/skip counts didn't transfer. so these play lists are not entirely accurate, but over time i'll have a nicely groomed library with room for the new music I've been adding at a frantic pace lately. Utilizing the star rating is going to be key for me going forward as well.
