Since this board is pretty dead, the few of us here may as well argue about stuff (politely discuss and debate, really)
I want to discuss the notion of WSP as headliner.
From my view, they're really not very popular. I've never heard of them before bonnaroo, and had I never attended I probably never would've even heard them mentioned. I think it's a regional thing. I guess they're huge in Georgia, Tennesee, and other parts of the south. But in South Florida they can't even fill the fillmore, which is a theatre medium-ish sized venue, past maybe half capacity. And I suspect it's the same in most of the country, like the northeast and the west coast (correct me if I'm wrong)
I understand they're big in the jam scene and bonnaroo likes to keep the sunday jam closer tradition alive. So let's also look at that argument. If Widespread is indisputably headliner material, why not String Cheese Incident? Are they not equally big in that demographic? And the thing I really don't get: Why not the allman bros? Why were they billed so far down when they were supposed to play in 2008? In my view they seem to have much wider appeal and name recognition. Wasn't WSP pretty much spawned from the heavy influence of Allman Bros?

So real quick here, they are huge on the WC, or at least can sell out multiple nights at RR, and have people from Nashville go. They are just big where they are big, and have a huge dedicated following. They are essentially the southern version of Phish.
I think Panic is more popular than you think laggy. They are more big in the south than anywhere else like you said. They are playing at TWC Arena in Charlotte on New Years, which I know is different than a normal tour stop. But still I bet they get close to 15,000 people to show up. Granted they are not more popular than any Friday or Saturday night headliner but when it comes to Jam Bands they are probably 3rd right now behind Phish and Furthur. So if those 2 are not playing then WSP is ACs next choice probably if they keep Sunday jam band oriented

Ok I know this is going to seem like I'm just doing this because of our little squabble but it has nothing to do with it I promise. WSP are def not huge here in the West. They are huge in Colorado but they are relatively unknown else where in the West compared to the South. On this tour they are playing 2 nights at the Fox in the bay area and 2 nights at the Wiltern in LA. Another band playing 2 nights at the Fox this summer is the Avett Brothers and Foster the People are doing it at the Wiltern to give you an idea of the size of the venues
WSP are bigger than Laggy thinks but smaller than Jess thinks.
Widespread Panic selling more tickets than Arcade Fire since 1995....
Well if your going since 1995 then you just gave Panic a 6-8 year head start on the ticket sales.
Panic is a very popular jam band and nothing more. They have never really broken away from the jam band crowd and never will. To compare Panic with Arcade Fire is flat out ridiculous. Arcade Fire is way more popular. I should even have to tell you that Jess bc you know Panic is not thaaat popular.
Panic is popular in the South and with the Jam crowd around the states. I think they are in the top 3 jam bands now based on popularity.

As of right now yes. If we are talking all time then the Allman Brothers w/ Duane and Dickey are above Panic as well as The Grateful Dead. For some reason I don't include DMB. Probably cause I don't see them as in the jam band scene. I like Panic a lot by the way so it is not like I'm bashing them on popularity but it is just the truth

They sell out 2-3 night in LA, and Colorado, who knows how many they sell in AZ. I will say they recently sold 4000 tickets at a 1000$ per person minimum at a Mexican resort, and everyone was complaining about lack of tickets. On the other hand Arcade Fire has yet to play a soutehrn venue with more than 4000 tickets available.
Whether or not you (or Pitchfork) likes a band has nothing to do with the actual popularity of said band. Panic has been a 25 year juggernaut, I saw them selling out a 30k amphitheater in 95, and the only reason they get guff on this board is because a lot of people live far away and leave on Sunday never bothering to see the show.
I like Panic a lot. I have seen them 4 times this year already. But the 90s was their biggest period. The George years killed them. They are popular but Jess you are overstating it bit here. Also you have to know that a lot of the people who are at Panic show are the same people who went to the show before and will go to the next one. They have probably more repeat customers than anyone else.
Stop with the Arcade Fire comparisons. It is getting embarassing

Stop with the Arcade Fire comparisons. It is getting embarassing
Eh.. not embarrassing at all, except to people who put Arcade Fire up on a non deserved pedestal. Some bands are bigger in certain demographics is all, and Panic and AF are pretty comparable there. They both play a mix of large and small venues and have a very dedicated fan base. For that matter Phish and Furthur are a lot bigger than both.
Don't know either of the venues but there is a whole world out there. Not everything revolves around TN. Check album sales since 2002 and get back to me. Check any music chart around and I bet all 3 AF records are above all of Panic's

For what it's worth, I agree with Jess that Arcade Fire are on an undeserved pedestal. I listen to their albums and I really like them, but hearing people go on and on about how they're the most important band of the decade or the next radiohead just feels way overblown. I don't understand the overwhelming accodlades, and I don't understand why they were headliners either, to be honest. I think his comparison insofar as regional demographics and venues they play is apt

Miley Cyrus has more than both, in terms of popularity I meant butts in seats.
Orpheum 3k
Fed ex 20k
Also other than NYC And LA the american music scene revolves a lot around our little town.

But I should add I do agree, overall, Arcade Fire is more popular. They're in mainstream media more and I think more average joe's would know about them than WSP. Like I said before, if not for bonnaroo I never would've heard about WSP. I definitely would've heard alot about arcade fire
Like u said before it is the same butts in the seats a lot of the time at Panic shows. Last time they played Charlotte and Raleigh Panic didn't even fill up the pit. Everyone who had lawn tickets got moved to the pit and it still wasn't full. I'm not even gonna argue this point anymore bc there is mo reason to. Arcade Fire is more popular than Widespread Panic. It is a fact

No not really, I will admit calling a specious non-argument a fact is a good way to not get a point across though. I am going to try myself for that matter
The fact is that Widespread Panic is more popular band than AF, and has a more dedicated fan base.
To make things ever more interesting here are a few more for comparison sake AF: 26,300,00 WSP: 4,120,000 Furthur: 2,580,000 MMJ: 8,760,000 ABB: 5,830,000 Daft Punk: 38,000,000 KOL: 46,500,000 Phish : 14,400,000

We have already established that hipsters rule the internet, lets be fair though, 20 million of those are nodepression.
Well considering I think we can both agree Bonnaroo is more and more marketed towards younger generations then I think we can both agree Arcade Fire is more popular with the modern Bonnaroo crowd than WSP
Arcade Fire has been on the cover of Times. Sold 156k copies of The Suburbs in it's first week. Won Album of the Year. Has headlined almost every major festival in the world. Arcade Fire goes on World Tours. They don't play the same venues to the same crowd every tour. Panic couldn't pull off a world tour if they wanted to. The Surburbs also debuted number 1 on the European charts. I doubt Panic has ever charted significantly high on the European chart. Just because Panic is popular in the south doesn't mean than are more popular in general. Also Red Rocks is Panic's biggest shows of the year. It seats 9500 people and those 9500 people are the same people who have been to all of Panics shows already that year. It's not like 9500 different people show up each night. Arcade Fire sold out Madison Square Garden for 3 nights which as know is significantly larger than Red Rocks
