Down was awesome. Light crowd but that was a good thing, IMO...esp after how crowded and unbearable the GWAR show was. It was my third time seeing Down, and the best one yet. No front man works the crowd like Phil. Unfortunately a friend of mine fell down in the pit and broke his arm...OUCH. .
Can't get into DOWN at all!! The crowd is pretty f'n bad. Last time I saw them I drove to ATL to see The Melvins who were opening for Down, and the crowd was so shizzy towards the Melvins. It was weak! I left Down after 15 minutes the crowd there was so bad and I've been to crust punk shows and really hardcore stuff. I should have gone to Depeche Mode at Lakewood that night!!! WTF was I thinking!? The only band's crowd I can compare Down to is Crowbar. Saw them at Metalliance in NOLA last year and that singer was chugging O'Douls on stage. I was laughing so hard. They were total joke playing after the mighty ST.VITUS
Feel for ya about GWAR bein' crowded. Seen em like 6x. Bonnaroo late night GWAR was a let down. Could not get in there and no one was raging it at all. I figured GWAR super late night Roo would be epic but it was a bunch of pandas standing around. If Roo ever did a Butthole Surfers late night I would lose my mind

The only band's crowd I can compare Down to is Crowbar.
Not too far fetched seeing as one of Down's guitar players and bass player are the lead singer and bass players for Crowbar. Pretty much the same crowd for their shows.
I have been a huge down fan for a long time. I may be a little biased and able to overlook stuff like that because I love their music so much. I had fun.
Since we're way off topic here, I'm gonna run with it... Anyone catch the secret George Porter show @ Paradise yesterday? I was throwin' a big cookout so I couldn't make it, but I definitely wanted to...

I couldn't make it. A friend of mine went and got a pic with Porter while he was there.
He will be playing at Alabama Music Box July 14th. That's gonna be a great show. Unfortunately, I will be in ATL that weekend though.
Sweet! I had no clue he'd be there in 2 weeks! I'll be there fore sure, may even post up in Mobtown for the night. I didn't even find out about yesterday's show til the day before, too late at that point though.

Bar/Hotel in P'cola. That chick Julia that we hung out with a little bit at hangout this year works at the hotel. We met her the first time at that Omar/Zech show at the Parish last year.

I love how the Hangout thread always becomes the "wuz happening in southern AL/FL panhandle thread". ;D thanks for the heads up, I will try to make this GPJ show. Will be awesome having him at the Music Box, I love that place.
and I really WANT to be into Down. I've tried to listen and enjoy them all the way back to their first album, when I was a huge Pantera fan. just never took. Its weird, I like the idea of Down, I love their album covers, I love that they are a NOLA-centric band, hell I love their song titles ("New Orleans is a Dying Whore"? that is metal as Quack), but musically it just doesn't move me.
in other news I have class until 10:15 the night of explosions in the sky. sucks, I wonder if it will start super late (normal mobile time) or earlier (actual time provided by venue)?

I think that Julia chick may be friends with my girlfriend randomly. Small world...

Yeah that's awesome! We got a good group of local people on here! I have the Explosions date on my calender, haven't heard them yet, but was thinking bout headin' to town to check 'em out... Wasn't sure if it is going to be worth it or not though.

I booked a show at the box the weekend after GPJ: Zechs Marquise & And So I Watched You From Afar (July 22). It's a sunday but it will be an early show. And this is the closest Zechs is coming too....no nola or p'cola date. Check them out if you're unfamiliar. I'm really excited about scoring them at freakin' the box based on $10 tix. If you know any local bands in p'cola that might would fit well for that show, tell me their names and I will check them out and contact them because we need a couple of locals to open. I wanted Fargo and Westernlands to open because they're the best fit out of all the bands in Mobile, but neither can do it that day.

Got the Zech's date on my calender already also! I was stoked to see that when it popped up on Jambase. I honestly couldn't think of anyone who would really fit the bill well. My buddies play in Timberhawk (they normally play The Islander or The Break every weekend) but they have a lot of good original shiz and just got done mastering their new album. Like I said I really don't know if they'd fit the bill, but they're friends so I always like to throw their name out there just in case ;D

Ha, yeah...not a very good fit for that show. I really need some local bands that have a pretty decent following to help the turnout. Sundays show don't normally do that great and I'd be really disappointed if the venue lost money on this one. I think we need at least 100 heads to break even. I may end up going with L.F. Knighton and El Cantador if they're available for the date just because the latter would bring at least half that and the former is one of the best bands in Mobile.

Paradise Inn is the shiz! I had friends staying there during DeLuna and it was a fantastic side base. GPJ killed it, of course, with only him plus a keyboard and drums. The bar is outdoors, so I just drank my own six pack and hung out in the water. Great quacking Sunday!
I am surprised and delighted to see someone say "I love Alabama Music Box" on here.
caddy - "Panic en la Playa, French Quarter Fest, Wanee, Jazzfest x2, Hangout, Allgood, Lollapalooza, Dragoncon, Goner Fest, Voodoo, Bear Creek" - Quack, dude, you are doing something right.
I'm 90% sure both of us are going to biitch out on Lolla. I'd honestly rather save that $1000+ in hotel/flight/gas/food on going to other stuff this year and doing a better festival next year. Also, we only did half a day of french quarter fest and 4 days of jazzfest.
I'm pretty sure I will be able to make Goner Fest this year (it's the weekend after DeLuna though). Still waiting on lineup, but they're working on it now. I know they asked Gary Wrong Group to play a couple of weeks ago and Chad told them "quuack yeah, son!" I couldn't go last year because it was the same week as our plant shutdown. I've already seen Shannon & the Clams, Manatees, Human Eye, and Ty Segall though but love them all and wanted to see them again. I've never seen The Gories though, but they are playing NOLA June 16th. I just have to decide if I really want to make 3 trips to NOLA within 9 days. I'm still broke from jazzfest/hangout and trying to catch up on bills right now.

I was at French Quarter Fest and 4 Days of Jazzfest over both weekends. Are you trying to say that doesn't count in the "stats". I hope you aren't that much of a perfectionist. I had to leave Wanee '11 a day early too, does that mean it doesn't count?
