And wow, you're like a walking, talking infomercial to turn people away from Pearl Jam and Ohio State, aren't you? Before you started posting here I quite liked Pearl Jam and was indifferent towards OSU, now I find myself wishing that Eddie Vedder falls down a mine shaft or that Columbus is infested with locusts
^^man, I feel reeeeaaallllly bad for anybody who decides to skip Radiohead to get drunk at camp instead - especially if some of the late night choices afterward are as clichéd as this year's Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, STS9, Bassnectar, etc.
Why, exactly, are those band clichéd? Because they're EDM/psychedelic rock? They had plenty of other "non-clichéd" bands playing late night this year too, you know.
First of all, I would not classify any of those as being even remotely near psychedelic-sounding. I would actually be all for more psychedelic rock late night - The Black Angels were phenomenal this year.
But, to answer your question, I don't consider those acts clichéd picks based on genre alone, per se; rather, it's that most of them have either played late night before, or are playing at many different fests. Girl Talk was late night in '09 and I think '07 as well. STS9 was late night in '07, as was SCI, and Pretty Lights was late night in '09. And Bassnectar has played like half the festivals out there just in the past year or so. That's what made it yawn-worthy to me - if you've been going to Bonnaroo for a few years or go to multiple fests a year (as many of us do), then you're not getting a chance to see anything new or exciting. A late-night set is a very coveted spot at Bonnaroo, and there are only ~15 late nights a year out of around 150+ acts (roughly two acts per tent per night, and 2-3 stage shows total). It's just really, really quacking boring to give us what was essentially an amalgamation of late nights from '09 and '07, especially considering how stacked this year's lineup was.
Who cares if they play every festival, every year? How does that impact the experience that you have on that specific evening?
Because it's boring as hell, that's why! I have nothing more than a very passing interest in most of the bands listed above, so to have them dominate late night every other year is not something that interests me. There are just so many great acts on the lineup already - why put something we've already seen multiple times in such a high profile slot when there's so much fresh stuff out there? Also, my other complaint is that it makes for a very homogenous late night lineup when you keep booking the same 4-6 acts over and over again. If you don't like electronica (and I do, but a lot of people don't), then there was absolutely nothing for you after 2AM on Friday except Lil' Wayne.
Having a good time with a close group of friends before watching music that you enjoy > watching a band that you find unappealing
It is sad if you don't understand that
Ummm... but I do? Basically all you said was that watching music you enjoy is better than watching music you don't enjoy. And I agree with that - which is why I wanna see some more inspired picks for late night next year.

IMO all of those cliche'd, boring, repetitive, and non psychedelic late nights bands would be more entertaining to me than a radiohead headlining set. people have different opinions on music than you. ESPECIALLY at a place like bonnaroo.

Some other wishes for 2012 that are possible: Fleet Foxes, Phantogram, Odd Future, Animal Collective, The Kills, The Shins, Bon Iver, Band of Horses, moe., Bright Eyes, Andrew Bird, Crystal Castles, M83, The Chemical Brothers, TV On The Radio, Modest Mouse, Two Door Cinema Club, Plump DJs, Queens of the Stone Age, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Buffalo Killers, Yuck, Noah and the Whale.
i could actually see about half of these happening. m83 and crystal castles are playing moogfest. bon iver, tv on the radio, yuck, and fleet foxes are going to have a good year leading to 2012. modest mouse and qotsa both need to make an appearance on the farm @ least once.
i know it's been mentioned but the fact that glastonbury isn't going on next year could mean some epic things for roo 2012.
