I got worried you really thought I hated you. I think I've enjoyed the Phoenix shows I've seen more than the Keys shows I've seen, for what it's worth.

It's his opinion. It's not like those two are so far apart that that's insane anyway. Both are exceptional bands making music today.
i really dont think they are that close, at least in the US. The k Keys are a much bigger band then Phoenix, if the newest album is as big as Brothers, then Black Keys will be moving into the upper echelon of the current touring bands(this excludes the legendary bands that are still out touring) Phoenix is not close to that level at this point.
Lady Gaga is arguably the biggest pop star currently performing. There's no way she's 5th on a potential lineup. She'd be 2nd at the very lowest.
if it were any other festival i would agree with you.
Up until last year I'd be on the same page, but when a festival books Eminem as its top-billed headliner, is giving Lady Gaga a high-profile slot (even top billed, depending on the other headliners) really that far out of the realm of possibility?

you'll recall the black keys played a 6:15 slot on the 2nd biggest stage at lollpalooza in 2010, and 25 hours later Pheonix headlined the same stage.
sure black keys have kept up their hype while phoenix took some time off, but we're talking 15 months ago.
Also in 2010, Phoenix closed the Which while The Black Keys played in a Late Night Tent. Fast-forward one year and The Black Keys are closing the What.
Obviously the Black Keys are bigger now because they've been constantly touring since the release of a 2010 album, while Phoenix has done very little US touring since their last album came out in 2009. Once Phoenix's next album comes out it'll be easier to gauge who's bigger.

absolutely not. i'm not trying to say she wouldn't be billed 1st or 2nd, in all probability she probably would be. it's the same reason on why is Bruce billed higher than Phish? why is Dave Matthews billed higher than Jay Z and Stevie Wonder? They have all achieved huge amounts of success in one way or another and are all playing a primetime slot at one point in the weekend. does it really matter who is billed 2nd and who is billed 4th?

It's close, but The Keys have passed them.
sry my post was irt s2. i'm in the 'black keys are bigger, but not by a wide margin' boat as well.
although black keys didn't close the what irt semantics
The Black Keys got bigger and bigger as the year went on after the release of Brothers though. where they were in summer of 2010 to the summer of 2011 was a pretty crazy jump seeing that they were still on tour for the same album. The bands popularity seemed to grow despite not releasing new material. Their older material began popping up in commercials all over the place, you didnt have that same thing with Phoenix.
Phoenix would need an absolutely huge album to get to Black Keys status. If the Keys put out another huge album they are headliner status at any festival in the US, I dont see Phoenix being headliner status even with another big album.
Im not hating on Phoenix, in fact I like them quite a bit, and I loved their set at Roo in 2010. My guess is that next time they are back they are Which closers or Late Night set(id imagine tent, but I guess it would be possible to see them Late Night Which). The next time the Keys are back I think its as a headliner. Theres really only one step to for the Keys at Roo. I doubt you see them doing anything other then headline after having an unopposed What Stage set(even though it wasnt a 'headliner')
And wow, you're like a walking, talking infomercial to turn people away from Pearl Jam and Ohio State, aren't you? Before you started posting here I quite liked Pearl Jam and was indifferent towards OSU, now I find myself wishing that Eddie Vedder falls down a mine shaft or that Columbus is infested with locusts

we disagree on the draw phoenix has. they played msg. not really trying to make this a thing.

sry, i don't post paragraphs :/
im not trying to make it a thing, just havin a discussion. maybe its more the area im from. I just dont hear much about them in the midwest, most people i know think phoenix is that 'band who sings the fallin song'. i love them as a band, i just dont see the popularity in this part of the country(im in toledo, oh).
like i said, i like phoenix, i think they are a great band, and i see them as a top 10 act. its just that i see the keys(if the new album does well) as a top 3 act.
edit:
yes i know the lyric in 1901 is 'folding, folding, folding' for the record, it just seems a lot of people thinks its 'falling, falling, falling'

between 3 and 5, not much, but i think if they are 5(that means late night Which) they had a giant album. difference between 3 and 10 however is a bit more. they are pre-HL or which closer. maybe latenight tent.

Since 2006 there have been zero Late Night Which acts that were billed number 5. Just saying.
Black Keys were number 4 in 2011, and they're only getting bigger. When they inevitably come back, it'll be in the top 3, meaning unopposed headliner.

Although I've been on The Keys side so far, I have to draw the line at headliner. "Brothers" was, by far, their most commercially successful album, and it didn't put them at headliner status. Even another "Brothers" wouldn't get them there. They would need to change or add some dynamic to their music to read the level where they could headline a major festival and I don't really see that happening. Usually bands that rise from low-level indie band to Headliner have some sort of arena-rock, anthemic sound that The Keys lack. Arcade Fire has always had it, so they were able to continue growing until their music acheived that status. Kings of Leon added it with Only by the Night, and immediately blew up. Bands like Vampire Weekend, MGMT, The Black Keys, and Phoenix are about as big as indie bands can get without that element. I mean, even The Strokes don't headline...but The freaking Killers do.
Jay-Z(#4), NIN(#4), Kanye West(#5) were all late night acts

Black Keys were billed 2nd on their day at coachella and #4 on the bill at bonnaroo were they had an unopposed set. if they have another album anywhere near as big as Brothers they really only have 1 place to go.

You said "but i think if they are 5(that means late night Which)"
But I agree with s2 about the Black Keys. They don't seem like a stadium-filling, festival headlining rock band, but at the same time you can't argue against the idea that if they come out with an album bigger than Brothers, it doesn't make sense for them to come back to Bonnaroo in the same slot or lower. Damn that's a lot of commas.
