RHCP still plays 20,000 person arenas. I mean, we've had some big which stage acts, but that's kind of crazy. IMO, RHCP will be getting a legit headliner slot, sadly.
A bit off topic but is there a thread somewhere on how to get into the pit? We sorta tried last year and had no luck but if the Avett Brothers are there this year I don't care what I have to do, I have to be close.
Tip your security guard and he will get you right in
Why in the world would RHCP not be unopposed? Because last time Phish played a late night set the act before them (Beastie Boys) wasn't opposed? How silly. RHCP is a much bigger act, and this is a completely different situation. Just because Phish is most likely playing the same night as them does not change the fact that RHCP will most likely be playing unopposed.
I still have a gut feeling that RHCP will be billed as a special late night appearance on Which.... or RHCP opening for David Edward Grohl, which would even be better. Especially if they follow that up with QOTS LN and the aforementioned Mr Grohl sitting in on the skins.
Just fyi, Grohl's middle name is actually Eric. Sorry to be that guy.
@ Juggs - yep, I totally get what you are saying, and agree. That actually feeds into just what ITM says
@ ITM - I totally see where you are coming from. Looking at those past lineups, I see where there could be some argument over who was an actual headliner and who wasn't.
One thing is for sure though, 2008 was a seriously top heavy lineup. It was good throughout but you could argue that there were 5-6 legit headliners. Here, there is absolutely NO argument (I don't think) as to the fact that these 3 are LEGIT SOLID headliners.
Hence the confusion over those 2 words...
I want to leave you with this, because I really don't want to harp on it, and most of you are much more seasoned, and enlightened when it comes to Bonnaroo, the lineups and how things work. Im not much past a rookie, really.
Look at the lineup in 2008. Metallica, Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson, Widespread Panic, Kanye West
The way I see it, that is 5 legit headliners, regardless of how I feel about their music. Five. FIVE.
And if you match the money up, and compare it to Radiohead, Phish (even if they play 2 shows) and RHCP, there is room left to throw up another headliner, and make it roughly equivalent to 2008 in terms of firepower, and in terms of money.
I want to repeat, I think with this top 3 the festival would sell out, so in terms of ticket sales adding another 'headliner' type name does not make much sense. But in terms of loving the Bonnaroo fans back like they did in 2008? I think its at least possible.
also, just another thing Im throwing out there in my final post about another big name landing on the bill:
If they raise ticket prices by 10$, thats an extra 900 grand, roughly, right? and if they sell 5000 more tickets (they have the room on the farm) thats another roughly million. If thats all it would take to land say ____ _________ or ______ or someone else epic (excluding names to avoid monitor headbashes) count me the quack in.

Pit? Who needs the pit? Left side What stage whatupppppp
I see Phish headlining Thursday for the first time ever. Friday and Saturday LN sets. Then close the whole kit n kaboodle down on Sunday with a 5 hour set

surf bum's got a good point there. And the more I try to piece things together, the more I think we're getting Dre & Snoop in some form, in the top 3 or 4.

Umm Beastie Boys played opposite David Byrne.
Yes, accidentally added a n't in there. Rest of the post/point still stands.
Just because beastie boys were opposed when they played before phish doesn't mean RHCP are going to be opposed when they play before phish (assuming they do).

surfbumdj, I like you and your eternal optimism! I'm 100% with you, and I'm going to keep believing! If it happens, Wee-Haw! If it doesn't, I'm still seeing Radiohead and Phish! I win either way!

I think it's gonna say Radiohead * Dre & Snoop * Phish * Red Hot Chili Peppers, and I could totally see Red Hot playing before Dre and Snoop on saturday or something like that.

Here's the thing about 2008 though:
Widespread Panic weren't on the original lineup. The original plans called for Metallica, Pearl Jam, and Jack Johnson to headline. Kanye West was scheduled to pre-headline the Which stage but that got changed to a late night set to accomodate his Glow in the Dark tour that he was on at the time. Now I agree that one could argue that Kanye West was headliner worthy (as many did that year and continue to still do) but that doesn't mean Bonnaroo considered him a headliner (as can be explained by his original time slot).
Anyone hear anything about the Roots as a possibility?
Yes. A board member "confirmed" them based on info he heard from a friend. It's likely they'll be there but I never believe 100% unless it comes from the band themselves.
Sometimes that doesn't even work out (Talib Kweli in 2011)

That is all.
Know where that extra $900,000 is gonna go?
And
They won't book another artist when they can sell the festival out and pocket that cash.
I tried messaging Questlove on twitter but he hasn't responded. That kind of makes me think they might be there because he almost always answers me. Maybe that's just my wishful thinking.

To me 2009 was by far the most top heavy lineup. Phishx2, Bruce, NIN, Beasties, and Jimmy Buffett were all headliner caliber acts even if they did not all play in headliner slots.
Not to start a Kanye argument but it was kind of stupid for not to book him after the sun went down.
Anyway, I do think we will hear from insider right before the Grammys on 2 or maybe 3 more acts. My guess is that those acts will be The Beach Boys, Adele, and The Raconteurs.

Makes sense, and agreed. So does that mean that one of the 3 we have will be in a slot like this? I mean - there has to be some reason why she didn't just come with it and not qualify. "two headliners with r_d" no 'relatively loosely'. IDK.
Radiohead - Phish (1 or 2 doesnt matter) - RHCP is kickass.
I wouldn't be bothering to think about anything else if it wasn't for those 2 pesky friggin words.
Not to start a Kanye argument but it was kind of stupid for not to book him after the sun went down.
IDK then he could have played on time before he went to Atlanta to party. Also if I remember correctly wasn't he going to play like 8:30-10 or something? It would have been plenty dark.
