Where should I start for Portugal. the Man, The Walkmen, and Ray LaMontagne? Also, what does anyone know about the 22-20s? Their video on the Bonnaroo site makes it seem like they'll tear it up on stage.
I remember alot of people reccomending rubber factory last year... and I don't get it. By far, my least favorite black keys album. Thickfreakness ftw
fair enough. i have loved that album since it came out 6 or 7 years ago. i can't say thickfreakness is a bad choice either. i've been a fanboy with them since i saw them open for beck in 03. i think if i had to pick a least favorite it would be attack and release.
Arcade Fire - Funeral. "Neighborhood #3 (Power's Out)" is fantastic.
My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges is my favorite.
The Black Keys - I feel like Brothers is the most easy to latch on to, having some of the catchiest licks, but after that dig a little deeper into Thickfreakness and Magic Potion.
Ray Lamontagne - Trouble. Fantastic Album. "Jolene" is one of my all time favorites.
Girl Talk - There's not a bad album, but Feed The Albums is my favorite.
Lil Wayne - Yes, The Carter 3 is going to be the most like the show, but his mixtapes (No Ceilings, Dedication 1 and 2)
The Strokes - Is this It is the one, but Room on Fire isn't a bad one to start on either.
Old Crow Medicine Show - Big Iron World
The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
Justin Townes Earle - The Good Life
Smith Westerns - Dye it Blonde
Mumford and Sons, Florence and the Machine, Big Boi, Sleigh Bells, Best Coast, and Ryan Bingham are all one albums folks.
What should I listen to by : Widespread Panic, String Cheese Incident, Bassnectar, Primus, Explosions in the Sky, Gogol Bordello, Ratatat, STS9, Bela Fleck, and Devotchka?

Big Boi may technically have just 'one album', but from what I've heard he's performing a pretty even mix of his solo work along with Outkast songs on his current tour.
And Wavves has two albums. I'd listen to King of the Beach first.

That's true, so in that sense Stankonia is a must listen. "Gasoline Dreams" is one of my favorite album openers.
Widespread Panic The Black Keys The Strokes Deer Tick Alberta Cross !!! Deerhunter
Thanks guys! I can help out with starter albums on many of the artists in the lineup as well if anyone wants a pointing in the right direction. These bands however I have not taken the time to get into... until now. Thanks again.
Deerhunter changes with every album. I think for the majority of people that have never heard them, Microcastle is a great place to start. They really cleaned up their sound to an accessible level on that album...but, you would not appreciate it as much if you were not a fan of Cryptograms. Cryptograms is a life changing album, plain and simple. If you can take pleasure in all of the noise, ambiance, distortion, that a garage-punk band can possibly create to turn your brain into a psychedilic mess, then Cryptograms is for you. Basically, here is the progression for those with out much noise/psych/punk background: Microcastle Halcyon Digest Fluorescent Grey EP Cryptograms Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP Weird Era/Cont No title/(Turn it Up Faggot)

Honestly with Deerhunter I'd heard Microcastle but didn't really get into them till I heard Halycon Digest. Only now am I getting into their earlier stuff, but I would start with Halycon Digest just because it's hands down the most accessible album I've heard from them.
Eminem: Marshall Mathers LP (before you hate on Eminem give this a spin. Slim Shady LP is also top notch, Eminem Show has its moments and Recovery's a decent album but lacks much in specific to recommend it)
Arcade Fire: Funeral (hands down. Suburbs should probably come after that though, as it's what they're currently touring)
Iron & Wine: many great albums, I would start with Our Endless Numbered Days or The Shepard's Dog. both great mid-career albums that aren't hard to get into and are very representative of Iron & Wine's work
Strokes: Is This It, hands down.
Robyn: Body Talk
Scissor Sisters: self-titled
Wavves: King of the Beach
and those are all the artists I'm comfortable offering starter suggestions on. I haven't heard the new Decemberists much yet but I've heard it's one of their most accessible to date.
That said, who can give me a little insight on: Widespread Panic, MMJ, Pretty Lights, Opeth, and/or !!!?

What they all say is true, Okonokos is the one to start with for MMJ. As far as albums, I'd say Z gives you the best taste of what you're getting these days. Evil Urges and It Still Moves are both great too, and sort of represent the two sides of the coin. I love At Dawn and The Tennessee Fire, but those days have passed and you only get a taste of those these days.

I'm not sure anyone has asked but Dr. John's Gumbo is a good place to start for Dr. John. Trippin Live is also a must hear. Obviously there is another album you should check out before going, but I'm sure you can guess which one that is.

Any starters for Widespread Panic?
I know they are widely considered a band that shines its true colors in the live setting but I would like a good studio album to go off of as well. So maybe someone could give me a great studio album and a great live album of theirs to start listening to. I have heard that as far as their live shit goes Light Fuse Get Away is the one to go with.
One of my favorite pastimes is to dig through archive.org and find good shows, so I have some of those I can recommend for the jammier stuff.
STS9 This four-night Colorado run is some of the tastiest jams my ears have ever heard. Beautiful drum and bass, mixed in with some space funk and even improvisation that pretty much will take you to other dimensions. I love to listen to them while I'm studying, just pure instrumental joyousness. Night 1 - Fox Theatre - Boulder, CO Standouts: 986 Foot Tall Trees, ...And Some Are Angels, TWELVE, Kabuki, Grow Night 2 - Fox Theatre - Boulder, CO Standouts: Monkey Music, Squares & Cubes, Trinocular, Mischief Of A Sleepwalker, Circus, Rlly Wut?, Hubble Night 3 - Mishawaka Amphitheater - Fort Collins, CO Standouts: STS9, Baraka, Tap-In, Life's Sweet Breath, Moonsocket, Orbital, Water Song Night 4 - Mishawaka Amphitheater - Fort Collins, CO Standouts: Frequencies Peace 2 & 3, Kamuy, Ramone & Emiglio, We'll Meet In My Dreams, Breathe In (my personal favorite STS9 song), Movements > For My Peeps, Inspire Strikes Back
Railroad Earth New Year's Run 2008 in Portland. Railroad Earth plays a unique blend of traditional bluegrass instrumentation and no stylistic limits. Their songs have a fair amount of Celtic influence, especially when they're really jamming out. Night 1 - Aladdin Theatre - Portland, OR Standouts: Colorado, Black Bear, Dandelion Wine, The Hunting Song, Elko, Seven Story Mountain Night 2 - Aladdin Theatre - Portland, OR Standouts: Cold Water, Like A Buddha, Stillwater Getaway, Fisherman's Blues, Water Fountain Quicksand, Came Up Smilin' Night 3 - Aladdin Theatre - Portland, OR Standouts: Head, The Forecast, The Butterfly And The Tree, Bird In A House, Railroad Earth, Hard Livin', Warhead Boogie, Long Way To Go, Little Rabbit
The String Cheese Incident 2001 Winter Carnival at the Warfield in San Francisco. The whole run has insane energy and even more insane guests. Steve Kimock sits in on the first night, and Bob Weir on night three. Night 1 - Warfield Theatre - San Francisco, CA Standouts: Open Wide, Water, Round The Wheel, Lonesome Fiddle Blues, Got What He Wanted, Joyful Sound Night 2 - Warfield Theatre - San Francisco, CA Standouts: On The Road, Born On The Wrong Planet, Little Hands, Cedar, Black Clouds, Land's End, Smile Night 3 - Warfield Theatre - San Francisco, CA Standouts: Come As You Are, Latinisimo, Best Feeling, Rivertrance, Estimated Prophet (with Bob Weir), Dark Hollow
Widespread Panic (for those who torrent) Atlanta New Year's run from 1996. True these shows were with Houser on guitar, but the spirit is the same with a Panic show. Also tons of guests throughout. Night 1 - Fox Theatre - Atlanta, GA Standouts: Stop-N-Go, Makes Sense To Me, Pleas, Wondering, Indian Song, The Porch Song Night 2 - Fox Theatre - Atlanta, GA Standouts: Little Kin, Travelin' Light, Sleepy Monkey, Holden Oversoul, It Ain't No Use, Driving Song, Ain't Life Grand Night 3 - Fox Theatre - Atlanta, GA Standouts: Can't Get High, Westport Ferry, Space Wrangler, Hatfield, Pigeons, Tall Boy, Chilly Water, Mr. Soul

^^^ Thanks for this! I think I will like some of these bands (not Panic - seen them many times and still don't love them...) but wasn't really sure where to start.

I'll offer up my suggestions for some of my favorite bands.
Ratatat - They are going to simply blow peoples minds with their show. Start with Ratatat, move on to Classics, then LP3 and LP4.
Explosions In The Sky - The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place. That should be enough to hook you.
Portugal. The Man - Censored Colors is their masterpiece. After that move onto Church Mouth -> The Majestic Majesty and then onto American Ghetto.
Cold War Kids - Robbers and Cowards is so amazing. Loyalty To Loyalty has a few great songs, haven't heard the new album yet.
Matt and Kim - so amazing live. Start with Sidewalks and then move backwards thru their disco with Grand and their S/t. I love pretty much every song they've recorded but Sidewalks is just so goddamn catchy.
Atmosphere - I haven't heard their whole catalogue, but my favorite album by them would have to be You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having.
Girl Talk - you really can't go wrong with any album, but don't start with his first two, those are less accessible. I'd say Night Ripper -> All Day -> Feed The Animals.
My Morning Jacket - either Evil Urges or Z. Z is one of my favorites.
