There are some acts that I just feel obligated to go see. I don't really love Loretta nor do I dislike her but I'm almost positive I'll be at this show. The fact that she is clearly a legend and this is one of the few chances that I would have the opportunity to see her pretty much seals the deal.
I was just reading about how Loretta's been canceling shows left and right this spring due to complications from her knee surgery. I'm really hoping she doesn't have to back out of Bonnaroo.
Also, is it just me, or is she billed criminally low on the lineup. How the hell is she below Jovanotti and Bruce Hornsby???

***Prepares to wave goodbye to a few awesome points***
Because she is old, and her music is NOT as popular like it was in 1971.
I saw Jerry Lee Lewis at BSMF this past saturday. The man is a Legend, with the a L. It was cool to see him, just so I can say I saw him, but his performance was pretty boring.
Wanda Jackson is in the same boat, IMO. I am, in no way, questioning their importance to the music world, or either of their statuses as legends, but once you turn 65, you really should think about taking it easy.

I also think she's billed low, but I guess it boils down to exactly how Bonnaroo places people on the line-up. I've always assumed it was based on how much they paid each act...
I hate to say it and I might change my mind (always keeping options open), but if it were Strokes/Beirut/Loretta in a conflict, I'd have to go with Loretta Lynn. Her life story is amazing, her songs are heartfelt, and the lady has a set of pipes. Hell, and I'm not even that huge of a country fan.
i don't think age necessarily prevents a good performance from the artist. james brown was 70 when he played in 2003 but he was pretty amazing out there on stage...in the heat of a tennessee afternoon wearing a three piece suit. hardest working man indeed. i'm just sayin...you might miss a lot of good music and art if you discount the aging and aged.

Me too. I think the Strokes and Beirut will be around for much longer than Loretta.
I saw Loretta last year at a nearby casino. She was absolutely amazing! Two of her sisters were there with her and they sang with her for most of the concert. Her kids were also there and sang a couple songs with her. She is getting really old. She tried to stand the entire time but after the second song she had to sit and got one of her sisters to bring her a chair. She joked about it and made her sisters sit too so they weren't taller than her. For the encore, her and her sisters sang Coal Miners Daughter. It gave me goosebumps. There's no way I'm missing her set.
I personally feel like they failed at the line up this year .... The way it's all billed. It took me a few days just to get over the wordiness of it.
It is amazing how a couple years can make a difference as far the placing of the line-up. If Merle Haggard played this year he would probably be placed at least Gregg Allman is if not lower. Even he is placed a bit low on the bill. Looks like the promoters changed their motto to who can sell ticket will be placed higher (Mumford, Black Keys, Florence, and Bassnectar come to mind)

Amazing? I heard he was only able to crawl out on stage for portions of a couple songs while the rest of his set was composed of filler and a very late start. Can anyone else weigh in on this?
Sad to hear that Loretta is struggling so much these days. As someone who has spent most of his life in TN, I'm ashamed I haven't made more of an effort to see her over the years. I blindly rebelled against everything country for too long.

blahhh, I would hate a Loretta Lynn/The Strokes conflict. I'm really looking forward to seeing her.

Loretta is pretty high on my must see list. I have seen some recent video of her and talked to a few people who have seen her in the past couple of years and she still brings it. She is a living legend and would have to pretty much be against My Morning Jacket for me to miss her.
I know it's a long shot, but does anyone know how I would go about getting Loretta's autograph? I have a couple of old vinyl's of my parents I'd love to get signed....

In previous years there have been artist signings in a tent throughout the weekend. Don't know if that's been announced for this year or not. Would likely be yr best bet unless you have a backstage pass.
also, I wouldn't bring the records to Roo, just the jackets. And protected in plastic.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

Oh of course! I'd already thought of that...I can just see those records getting warped ::cringe::

Something tells me an artist of Loretta's stature won't be signing in the autograph tents. You never know, but I wouldn't count on it. If you reeeeeeeaaaaalllllllly want those autographs, I'd consider bringing an album jacket and a sharpie to her set, trying to get right up against the rail, and just wave it at her as shes taking her bows. I have no experience trying to get a Loretta Lynn autograph, but I have seen this work at shows before. Can't hurt to try -- especially at Bonnaroo, where unless you have special access, the closest you will get to an artist is during their set.
