Angelique Kidjo is about to release Remain In Light which will be a recreation of the Talking Heads' great album from years ago. She has released a video for Once in a Lifetime from that album.
The Rolling Stone Article and Tour Dates:
Angelique Kidjo transforms a dismal office into a free-form dance party in the video for her cover of the Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime." Three office workers play with their phones when Kidjo suddenly appears on their screens. The music kicks in, prompting the trio to dance. Kidjo's contribution is colorful as she sings and dances in front of psychedelic backdrops. By the end of the clip, which French filmmaker Antoine Paley directed, everyone's wet from the sprinkler system and in love.
The song is part of Kidjo's complete head-to-toe reworking of the Heads' classic 1980 album, Remain in Light. Throughout each song, the singer, who hails from Benin, played up the original songs' West African influence. For the recording, she worked with producer Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Mark Ronson), as well as Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen, Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, bassist Pino Palladino and others. She also added new lyrics to each of the songs in African languages like Fon and Yoruba that respond to David Byrne's verses. For "Once in a Lifetime," she added words about people's basic right to live.
"In the 1970s, under the dictatorship in my home country of Benin, it was really difficult to find music to listen to from the rest of the world," she said in a statement. "When I went into exile in Paris in 1983, I discovered so much new music, and among them was the song 'Once in a Lifetime.' Initially, it felt strange to me. People said it was rock & roll, but it felt African somehow.
"When I performed in New York in 1992 at SOB's, David Byrne was the first American artist to come see my show. Many years later, I discovered that Brian Eno and the Talking Heads had been influenced by Fela Kuti and studied John Miller Chernoff’s book African Rhythm and African Sensibility about the power of African music. 'Once in a Lifetime' was released at the start of the Reagan presidency, and you feel the anguish and anger in its lyrics. I feel the same tension in today's political climate. Bringing 'Once in a Lifetime' back to the African continent, with the help of superstar producer Jeff Bhasker, Black Panther's percussionist Magatte Sow and guitarist Dominic James, feels so right today."
Kidjo has a handful of North American dates booked for the summer, some of which will feature performances of Remain in Light.

The Doors will release 14 unreleased tracks on the 50th anniversary of Waiting for the Sun reissue. "Available as both a 2 CD set and on 180-gram vinyl, the 50th anniversary of Waiting for the Sun will feature a fully remastered version of the album's original stereo mix. Furthermore, the set will also include a second disc of 14 unreleased tracks. As noted by Rolling Stone, 'OOf the 14 unreleased recordings, 9 are early "rough mixes" cut during the original recording sessions, which longtime Doors engineer/mixer Bruce Botnick discovered while digging through his archives...The remaining 5 unreleased tracks were recorded live at a 9/17/68 Doors concert in Copenhagen. The live selections include Waiting for the Sun staples, Hello I Love You, Five to One, The Unknown Soldier, Back Door Man and The WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat).'"
Isn't Atlas Underground supposed to be coming out today? For some reason I thought it was the 12th. I've liked everything I've heard and also listened to Morello talking about the project and finding ways to replace a lot of EDM synthesizers with guitar parts and spanning a multi-genre record. This is the first album I've been excited about in a while. I guess I should go look around to see if it was the 12th or if I got that wrong.
Edit. It is out. Some of the stuff is bizarre, but a lot of it kind of jams. From what I hadn't heard yet, I liked:
Lead Poisoning (featuring RZA, GZA and Herobust)
Roadrunner (featuring Leikeli47)
Where it's At Ain't What It Is (Gary Clark Jr. & Nico Stadi)
So I just saw that Chevelle is working on their 10th album. 10? Really? I didn't fact check it but that can't be right. I quit keeping up with them probably around the 4th album. Doesn't seem like they've been around long enough to make that many albums. Man I'm old.
