i disagree that using the same stage show is like playing the same setlist, as ive said multiple times already.
using the confetti every show isnt the same as if Phish played Tweezer every show, its more like if they jumped on trampolines every time they played YEM. oh wait...
Someone already brought up the point that most bands dont do anything near the level of the flaming lips theatrics, but no one complains about the other bands using the same light show every time they play. If the flaming lips used a more boring stage show, would less people complain when its repeated? i really dont get what the complaint is with the show other than its been done before, but id be willing to bet that outside of Jay-Zs set up almost every band on the lineup has used same setup at all the other shows they played, but for some reason no one cares. they only want to complain about the flashiest show being repeated
i personally dont know if i would want to see them without all that confetti being blasted into the air. it was much more interesting to watch that than what was going on on stage. also, since i wasnt there, did they use the same video on the screen in 07? i loved the multicolored tunnel effect

Saw them in 2007 and it was great, one of my fav shows of the weekend
came over after the Black Keys (who rocked the bells) and was really disappointed in DSOTM. That and Coco were my only two disappointments of the weekend.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
I guess all of you who didnt like the show didnt catch any free money that they threw out in those big balloons.
5 dollar bill that had the words "The flaming lips love you" written on it. Pretty cool. I saw some guy behind me burning the one he caught with a lighter. I think i'll keep mine as a souvenir.

For the record, I love AAWTM!!! Also - have to add that the spaceship landing in 2007 was awesome ~ it was something they were only doing at a few shows that year and not on their entire tour. They're back here (in MN) in September and I'm wondering what they'll do ~ it's a smaller venue.

i think you are understating the music of the flaming lips. if the music wasnt worth listening to i wouldnt be there just for the light show and stage theatrics. i didnt go to deadmau5 despite him having a supposedly stellar light show because i dont like his music. i wouldnt want to see the lips without the confetti and lights because the music is so well complimented by it, and their songs really deserve to be made a spectacle of.

I think a lot of Flips fans would love to see a stripped set with pre Soft Bulletin material included in the mix. Even Soft Bulletin material, which they seem to not want to play anymore. They have too many great songs to just let them lay on tape because they don't fit the spectacle Wayne wants to create.
Did I have a great time when I saw the Flips? Yes of course, the confetti and screen are fun. But I would love to see something different from them at this point. It's almost like a stripped down set would be more of a mindfuck than the circus that's created everytime they take the stage.
I don't mind the circus, but if there were less circus, more of the fans would be there for the music instead of just drugged out douchebags. If you care about the music, you realize that they are playing different music now; the embryonic stuff is awesome live and dark side is a special treat. If you are there for the circus, yeah, not much change.

NoD, this exactly. Been waiting over 10 years to see something like this again. I love the 21st century shows, in fact I'm bringing someone to see them for the 1st time in a few weeks, and I can't wait to see her face when she sees it. One of my favorite things to do at a Lips show is to deflower a virgin! ;D
But these over the top shows aren't what made me a fan. Since around 1991, I got to watch the whole progression that led them here, and I LOVED the ride. Still DO, but for me, the Lips have ALWAYS been about the music. It was all those great albums I played again and again and wore out. It's just unfortunate they don't play actually the majority of that music anymore. So many amazing songs left behind. They shoot confetti, dance with aliens and animals, and make me scream Yeah Yeah Yeah for 10 minutes to change the world instead. And that's fine. It's Wayne's choice and I love and respect him for it. I still have a great time every time. They throw a kickass party, and they still blow my mind.
But if the Lips suddenly announced something like MMJ did at Terminal 5, without hesitation I would go into debt and by a ticket for every night from Hear It is--->The Soft Bulletin. Wayne, you just name your price. (Though I'd probably have to do a lot of NO NO WORD!!! to make it through Telepathic Surgery )
Honestly, one reason I think they don't do at least some of the old stuff anymore, is because neither Steven nor Wayne can play a guitar anywhere near well enough to pull off the best of it. But that's just my opinion, I can't prove it, because they won't play any of those songs to try and prove me wrong.
The fabulous Kliph Scurlock on why few old songs played live Current mood: thankful Category: Music I noticed a brilliant comment Kliph made in the Flaming Lips message board regarding the larger audience than originally thought for the RJ era and hoped RJC readers might appreciate it being copied here in our blog?
It just really hit the nail on the head. It's really true. And seems to pertain to the RJC friends.
From page 144
"...And, as far as playing more old songs versus new ones - Wayne believes that the majority of the audience is probably familiar with the last 3 records and probably not so much the ones before that. He's very clued in to the fact that [several] of the "old school" fans didn't like the shift in direction that came after Ronald left and that new fans were picked up from The Soft Bulletin onwards.....especially with Yoshimi....so he doesn't like to do too much stuff that he feels will leave the audience bored or confused. I think he's realizing that not as many people dropped off as he previously thought and that new fans are going back and checking out and digging the old records and, therefore, is getting more into the idea of playing more older songs. ..."
This is exciting stuff! Please comment with your thoughts on the matter. Would you like to hear more of their mid 90's stuff played live too?
The RJC would like to thank Kliph for the insight and permission to use his words here in our blog.
I'm really glad this topic came up tonight, finding this gives me some hope! Even if it's just a little bit. There ARE a lot of us Wayne, at least the few dozen or maybe hundreds I helped to create over the years

Sorry to keep posting, but on the same site I also found a link to a pretty interesting (and loooong) interview with Steven Drozd, from ultimate-guitar.com
I actually only read the beginning closely, and skimmed the rest... because then it turns into endless guitar technique techno-babble that was making me dizzy.
But the beginning of it, and also the last paragraph at the end. That's what you should read if you are interested.
Unless you are an obsessed gearhead. Then you probably want everything thats in between that.
Either way, it is worth it. There's some very cool first hand history in there.

While I certainly am encouraged by the thought of older songs being incorporated into the setlist, that post was 2 years ago. And now they're getting rid of Soft Bulletin stuff. Ugh.
Very cool interview, I always thought of Steven as the real base of that group, the one who makes everything possible. That kind of confirms that.

This is slightly off-topic, but does anyone recall if the music from Christmas on Mars was used in this year's show at some point? I seem to recall hearing it (maybe during the intermission).

I just think it's a little sad that Wayne has so much confidence in his past work that he feels it "will leave the audience bored or confused." Not a lot of faith in his fans either.
I made this point earlier in the thread - but since so much of the Lips' stage show and their appeal is based on the spectacle (i.e. the Lips don't do stripped-down shows), them repeating the same shtick multiple times over many years is akin to other bands simply repeating the same songs over and over. Shooting off a confetti cannon every show at more or less the same point, or coming in with the bubble, or using the fake blood, or the camera-cam, or the puppets, or whatever, would be the same as going to see, say, Phish and hear "Bathtub Gin," "Tweezer," and "Bouncing Around the Room" every time.
If a band is going to focus on the theatrics, that's fine - but if you make that the focus of your live show, then you should put the same care into that part to avoid staleness and repetition as any other band would put into choosing their set list.
Let me put it another way - the Lips using the same stage effects/props/gimmicks in 2007 and 2010 is the same thing as if, say, Ben Harper played the exact set in 2011 that he played in 2009. If that happened, people would be livid.
I love the Flaming Lips, but I think that's how you need to look at it.
They're back here (in MN) in September and I'm wondering what they'll do ~ it's a smaller venue.
a shittier venue is a more apt description. quack the wilkins.
Lol! If you're floor - the sound is fine! Seats, however, urgh. I always wonder what they'll do this time around, though - it's ALWAYS different when they come here, and they come here at least once or twice every year! I'm so curious! It says this tour is 'supporting Embryonic and DSOTM'...so I'm expecting stuff from both, but I wonder what they'll do stageshow wise due to the lack of space to set stuff up. I've seen FLIPS long ago with stripped down, nothing on stage but them sets - and I've seen them progress to what they do nowadays. I honestly find myself thinking 'I can't wait!' every time I get to see them.

^^ They are playing Central Park here in a few weeks. Plenty of outdoor space for a wild show there, summer party in the park! Unfortunately, it sold out before I could get tix I might sit outside the fence in the park that night with a bottle of wine and listen anyway though. Though you can't see anything when you do that, so it works a little better with bands like Ratdog and Mule.
But THEN... they recently added another date the same week! At Terminal 5, for Spin's 25th Anniversary!
And I got tix in time for THAT!
And I too am curious as to what may transpire in this fairly confined/more intimate than usual space?
Whatever the case, it's definitely gonna be a night to remember ;D
New show?! They once did "Do You Realize?" 3 times at a show I was at lol how is that not fucking fresh? Long before Jay-Z and Kanye added this "swaggish" move into their repertoire. But seriously, it's always fun! It's scattered (yet organized) madness. Basically, any show with Wayne Coyne walking out of lady parts is an okay show by me.
Maybe the Yoshimi, Broadway thing Wayne's been working on could go mobile. LN 2014?
