Fixed it. Let's give Bonnaroo some ideas. Count me on Team Coldplay. Be more entertaining than a Frusciante-less RHCP's and a bigger, more current draw.
I certainly don't think Coldplay makes bad music. To me, however, it just really isn't anything special...yet they are mega-huge now and I don't understand what the big deal is. They blew up very quickly and unexpectedly (similarly to The Killers, who were inexplicably headlining fests last year). If they were at Bonnaroo, they would be 1 or 2 on the lineup, and that would just be a waste for me (not to say both 1 and 2 this year were not also a waste). I feel the same way about Muse.
I was listening to Viva la Vida this morning and thinking about Coldplay on the drive to campus (by the way, this is ALWAYS a bad thing when I get to thinking about a specific band, because I always come up with these crazy ideas like what I'm about to lay forth).
I think a lot of the Coldplay hate (and this isn't directed at you whatsoever, schmohawk, or people like you who just can't get into them) derives from the fact that Chris Martin seems to be such an incredibly nice, good-hearted, down-to-earth guy (as NoD mentioned, the anti-Bono). I think people think that if they like Coldplay and tell their friends they like Coldplay, or even if they just give Coldplay a chance, they'll be perceived the way Coldplay is generally perceived--too soft (this only really applies to males, and may explain why it seems that Coldplay has many more female fans than male fans). It's a common mistake people make, to mistakenly substitute a band for some ideal or conviction and then judging that ideal instead of the music itself. The best way to listen to an album and come up with an opinion on that album is to meet the music on its own terms and judge it for what it is, if that makes any sense.
Or, like Zapp said, people just hate them because THEY'RE RICH BIIIITCH.
But, anyway...if our options were U2, RHCP, Green Day, and Coldplay, I would love to see Coldplay at Roo. And I would love to shake Chris Martin's hand and tell him to keep on keepin' on because one should never have to pay a price for being a nice guy (not that he needs a handshake or that it would mean anything to him).
Nah, I think it's more they make uninteresting music and are widely perceived as knock off artists with little confidence (going by some things I've read Chris say). It has very, very little to do with being perceived as "soft". Honestly, who the fuck cares? I listen to plenty "pansy" bands, but do I let it create a delusion of being perceived as such? Hell no *beats chest and burps/farts*.
That said... I liked "Clocks" alright and I'm a big Eno-phile, so to be fair, I need to hear the record they did with him. Do I hate Coldplay's music? No. Is there very little I can find in it to get behind? Absolutely.
Maybe someday they can turn into this artist/critic/hardcore music fan favorite. But there is just too strong of a negative stigma right now.
i've hated coldplay since x & y came out, the album sucked but it made them huge. i loved the first 2 albums and went to see them, i guess it was right before the 2nd album came out and i only paid like $30. then when they went on tour for x&y tickets were like $70. i've never seen another band jump in popularity and raise their price that drastically. it really turned me off to them. and i feel like sense then everything they od is about image instead of the music and the music is not as good as it use to be.
about rhcp. i'm not a huge fan. but i think it's ridiculous what people are saying not wanting to see them without frusciante. mainly because i know how talented the guy that replaced him is. i mean, i don't like anthony at all, but the other 2 guys are great and the new guy is going to be fine. i don't see the live show suffering because he's there and john is not, i imagine it will be about the same. maybe their record will suffer without john (but they haven't been that good in the first place).
I've had the impression that most of the Coldplay hate stems from a single line in the movie Knocked Up...
And I agree with sangreal about RHCP. Obviously it wouldn't be quite the same without Fruisciante, but it's still RHCP. As long as they never play with Dave Navarro again, they'll be fine.

Actually, it was The 40 Year-Old Virgin, but yeah...Like I said, a) it was very early when I had that thought and my mind wanders like crazy early in the day and b) it's more pertaining people who haven't given and refuse to give Coldplay a chance, yet still hate them (AKA not Bishop, who seems to give most music a chance).

My problem with RHCP is that they really do not play the old classic stuff from the 80's/Early 90's anymore. A couple of songs of of BSSM is about it. No Catholic School Girls Rule, or True Men Don't Kill Coyotes. I saw right before BSSM came out and they were amazing. I saw them a couple of years ago and it was just sad.
I think either Knocked Up or Funny People had a knock on Steely Dan (NOT FUNNY!), but yeah the "You know how I know you're gay" is 40 YOV.
quackin Apatow.
Yeah, that was Knocked Up. Paul Rudd's music scout character says he likes Steely Dan, to which Seth Rogen's character responds, "Steely Dan gargles my ballsack."
I would not complain whatsoever if Coldplay could be booked as the 5th or 6th name on the lineup...but they can't. That is my issue with them in the Bonnaroo context.
I would be okay with Coldplay in the 2 or 3 spot, and I like them more then Green Day of the Chili Peppers. And right now it's a toss-up for me between U2 and Coldplay. But maybe we get both...?
And I would love to see Frusciante at 'Roo in some form next year.

I just can't see U2 and Coldplay both playing the same year...they're too similar to share the top 2 spots.

Between Coldplay, The Killers, and Muse (seen them all) Coldplay is the clear live pick. I would be real disappointed if the setlist wasnt at least half pre-viva though, and I'd likely be pretty disappointed.
How bout Smashing Pumpkins? They seem like a roo-ish type band and I really enjoyed their set this summer at Forecastle (although many people disagreed). They could probably be billed as a non-headliner unlike the 3 above and that would make me a lot more excited. I think it'd be a good late night set.

I'd be into seeing the Smashing Pumpkins in a non-headliner spot, but it would be a huge waste of a spot if they headlined. It's down to just Billy now as far as original members go, and I've heard they really suck now.

1. i knew somebody was going to take out RHCP, and put in Coldplay, i just knew it. Dangit karosko! well if it makes you happy, do what you will....
2. i 100% agree with Bishop. while i think the "soft" image does contribute to some of the Coldplay hate, i am personally with Bishop in that i just normally find their music very bland and uninteresting. There are exceptions, and i have several Coldplay songs on my iPod, i just wouldn't want to waste a top headliner spot on a band like them
3. i also agree with Sang. Josh Klinghoffer is amazing, and the Chili Peppers will lose absolutely nothing as far as live talent goes. now, i'm sure their recorded output will suffer, but i think they would still nail a live show! although i do agree they need to play some of their earliest stuff.
oh, Knocked Up is one of my favorite modern funny movies, but i got so mad at Seth Rogen's character when he knocked Steely Dan
I agree it would be difficult to see both U2 and Coldplay on the top of the bill together. They are both very similar acts, but I would love to see it. Especially if the rest of the top is eclectic (Jam band, Electronic, hip hop, comedy, alternative, indie).

coldplay is boring as shit and U2 can actually put on a show

I like it with RHCP or What about Foo Fighters & The WHO? anyone into seeing them? I still think MMJ will play the late night Phish spot on the What stage 12-3am Friday....I cant beleive its Sept. and we are doing this already..lol.
I've heard from several different people who were pleasantly surprised by how entertaining Coldplay is live.
You are correct, they are very good live. It is a little surprising, but I don't know if you can say better than Muse. They have a concert they did in Japan right after Viva La Vida was released. It is one of my favorites. It is on Palladia all the time. I'm sure you can find it online.
I would think you're right. I haven't seen Coldplay but Muse is easily one of the best live acts I've ever seen. Saw them twice in the Tabernacle and those shows have yet to be topped, as far as single shows that I've seen.
