Who'da thunk that Verlander would forget how to pitch, Zito would return to Cy Young form (and get an RBI) and Pablo Sandoval would match 1/4 of his HR total on the year in the first 5 innings.
Also fun fact related to the Zito note: In the last 4 games, San Francisco starting pitchers have given up 1 ER and drove in 4 RBI

I knew Zito would be good, the Tigers bats would be cold and their defensive Quack ups would keep Giants rally's alive. I was expecting something more like 4-2, but yea, this is all my worst fears.

I could talk about MadBum's return to form - pitching 7 scoreless innings after getting shelled in his last two post-season starts, then getting benched.
I could talk about how the Giants switched it up and played "small ball." (Have you ever seen a more perfect bunt?)
I could talk about how you couldn't make up a story with this many quirks and have it be believable.
But continuing the insightful analysis I displayed before game 1, I'll just say: Fister Shmister.
It's only 2 games and I've never fully recovered from 2002 (when the G-men were up 3 games to 2 against Anaheim and led 5-0 in the 7th inning of game 6 before it all crumbled away). So I know it's not over. But it's been awfully fun so far.
this pitch stood out to me the other night too but i didn't really think anything of it. marco scutaro hasn't taken a fastball that fat on a 1-2 count since 2007

I understand that, as much as we associate with our favorite teams, their wins and losses don't really reflect on us in any meaningful way. So you can say "we won" or "we lost" and you can feel joy or sorrow, but you're just a fan. If you want to know what victory is, you have to compete yourself -- not watch someone else do it for you.
So rather than gloat about the Giants sweeping the heavily favored Tigers, I'll just play a little Robert Johnson.
So rather than gloat about the Giants sweeping the heavily favored Tigers,
Were they, though? Detroit was tied for the 11th best record in baseball in the regular season, but since they played well in the ALCS everyone thought they would win. The better team won.
Edit: Well actually SFG's record was a little better than they performed and Detroit's in the tougher league. Still, though, I don't think one team was glaringly better than the other before the series started.

I mean, Billy's right that the Tigers were heavily favored by the talking heads, but yeah, the Giants were the better team, or at least the more consistent. A contact hitting team with hot pitching was basically the worst match up possible for Detroit.
Not for nothing, but if there had been anything like the celebration San Fran had in Detroit, people would have shiz themselves

C'mon Horn. The Giants were significantly better than the Tigers in hitting (for power and average), pitching (starting and relief), fielding, base running, and coaching. I think you can acknowledge that the Giants were the better team [/u][/size]in this WS.

I don't see how I didn't say that. The Tigers could have easily gotten hot and walked away with it, but average play or below average (which is what they showed up with) wasn't going to do it.

Gold Glove Awards are such a joke. Rollins, McCutchen and CarGo winning one are laughable. Adam Jones winning one over Trout is so bad it isn't even funny anymore, it's just criminal. And then there's the fact that Derek Jeter somehow stole 5 of them
Trout has the greatest rookie season of all-time and all he's gonna walk away with is a ROY because Adam Jones hit well on a team with a good story (while being statistically one of the worst defensive CFs in the AL) and that earns him a Gold Glove and because Miguel Cabrera won a Triple Crown and people think that equates to an automatic MVP... for shame

Haren to Cubs for Marmol.
Great deal for the Cubbies. Haren has A LOT of question marks, he's 32 coming off lower back injuries and the worst year of his career. Wasn't just last year and the injuries either, velocity, k-rate and swinging strike % have all been declining for the last 4 seasons. Been pitching to more contact and throwing less strikes for 4 seasons in the making as well. Reminds me of Jon Lester's peripherals going into last season so I thought whichever team would end up with him would end up feeling like they overpaid.
But Marmol is awful which makes this is a very low risk high reward deal. Even if Haren is bad they didn't lose much. If he is good they get quality production out of him until July when they flip him for prospects.

Interesting tweet from one of the Freakonomics guys about the likelihood of the "best" team winning the World Series. The writer admits to there being a sour grapes aspect to his analysis. The tweet is at bit.ly/YXMCff.

Rookie of the year, manager of the year, Cy Young runner up and Strasburg at full strength - 90 days til pitchers and catchers report. Dislike away, RDK, I still love you.
