So there's not really a topic or post addressing our answers and how comfortable we feel with those answers.
I figured it would be a good idea to make a sort of Heat Index (for lack of any applicable term), where we have each clue, the presumed answer, and, if we can manage it, all the wrong guesses for that clue. For clues that we haven't got a great answer for, we could keep a shortlist of the best current trends of thought. This can only save people headaches, I think.
Also going to include "Viable Trains of Thought", or directions to focus your thinking that either haven't been proven wrong, or have been proven right via DJJD.
Clue #1 The one monkey that was the warmest and his offspring Presumed Answer: Ingrid Michaelson Clue Solution: Warmest Monkee is Michael Nesmith, because he always wore a winter hat. His offspring is his son. Michael's son. Confidence: Near certain
Clue #2 Buddy when jolly Presumed Answer: John Prine Clue Solution: Buddy (Holly) when jolly led to the song "Oh Boy", which is the name of John Prine's record label. Subhints by DJJD also lead to Bruised Orange, the name of a Prine album. Confidence: Near certain
Clue #3 A perfect finish to misspelled mill ("meal") Presumed Answer: Tinariwen Clue Solution: Tinariwen's name means "the deserts"; "deserts" and "desserts" are often spelled as each other Confidence: Near certain
Clue #4 Two talented acts in one clue, one is rockin, both are "lockin" Presumed Answer: Clue Solution: Confidence: Viable Trains of Thought: Just about everything in the topic could theoretically be right, and it is implied that one of the answers is.
Clue #5 News that covers important topics Presumed Answer: Clue Solution: Confidence: Viable Trains of Thought: All semi-serious guesses up to about 2pm EST on 1/28 have been implied to be incorrect, thanks to the DJJD tweet around that time. We have since received new clues, but we haven't really gone anywhere with them. Seems to be a historical/military bent to them, though.
Clue #6 Find this music at Amoeba, but not the L.A. location Presumed Answer: Clue Solution: Confidence: Viable Trains of Thought: Medeski Martin and Wood, who have a project called the Radiolarian Series (Paul Westerberg was ruled out by his own management)
Clue #7 He was there at the enlarged auditory, but not in jelloland last year Presumed Answer: Clue Solution: The answer to the clue is someone who was at Big Ears but not at Outside Lands. The key is tying this into the other twitter clues. Confidence: Viable Trains of Thought: Dan Deacon, Mark Linkous
Clue #8 Tom and Jerry, without Art. Presumed Answer: Clue Solution: Confidence: Viable Trains of Thought: Sounds Like something with six letters. Other than that, I have no idea.
Clue #9 Tennis shoes can be de-feeted Presumed Answer: Clue Solution: Confidence: Viable Trains of Thought: It seems pretty evident that we're supposed to work off of Zappa, apparently to get to another artist. Flobots is the only other answer, and DJJD has implied that we have solved this one, but hasn't implied what the answer is.
Clue #10 Local boys made good, and largely by wood Presumed Answer: Clue Solution: Confidence: Viable Trains of Thought: Manchester Orchestra (Manchester, TN + orchestra having mostly wooden instruments); My Morning Jacket (Southern band; Louisville sluggers)
Clue #11 The City of Finished Fire, where the lights aren’t so tight, but do fit Presumed Answer: The Flaming Lips Clue Solution: The Flaming Lips had an incident at a show at The Orange Peel in Asheville, NC, in which a concert-goer had a seizure or something as the result of a strobe light placed at eye level. Confidence: Near certain Viable Trains of Thought:
Clue #12 I will be cheering for my fellow bulldog, hey Presumed Answer: Weezer Clue Solution: Brian Bell, guitarist for Weezer, is from Knoxville, and went to Bearden High as did DJJD; the school's mascot is the bulldog. Confidence: Moderate Viable Trains of Thought: Other artists with "Bell" in the name - Broken Bells, Sleigh Bells.
Clue #13 The Yankee and the unclothed gun. What style. Straight up-and-down, this guy lights up our smile. Presumed Answer: Clue Solution: Confidence: Viable Trains of Thought: Naked Gun keeps coming up. Farmhound also said something about the Naked Gun soundtrack, minus the Naked Gun part, so probably an artist who has been on a notable movie soundtrack.
Clue #14 the anti-clue: Another word for lisommeness + another word for territory. Presumed Answer: Clue Solution: Confidence: Viable Trains of Thought: We think it might be a clue for someone who isn't playing this year. Leading indications seem to be Paul Simon, as lissome = grace and territory = land.
Clue #15 Monitoring the digital rights will set you folks all right Presumed Answer: Glen Campbell Clue Solution: Confidence: Moderate Viable Trains of Thought:
Clue #"D" Like a Vietnam veteran without going to Asia, because he got mixed up and thought he was paticol. Presumed Answer: Clue Solution: Confidence: Viable Trains of Thought: DJJD has posted, but not tweeted, about this clue, and they have all been dog-themed.
Clue #"Z" Before the star hatched is what is two times before I was Presumed Answer: GWAR Clue Solution: I have no idea what the logic is here, but it has something to do with Edwin Starr's "War". Confidence: Moderate Viable Trains of Thought:
The Roo Clues website, which, admittedly, I didn't really look into to this point, is pretty nice, but it's a little... I dunno the word or phrase I'm looking for here. Spacey? Big. And, unfortunately, relatively speaking, not many people are looking in the General Discussion topic, and the link doesn't stand out to newbies (like myself >_>). I didn't even see it until this morning, and I've been reading along and such for nearly a week.
The way I see it, it can't hurt to have a similar, perhaps more compact, compendium of information on the board as well. It's at the very least as easy to update as the site, I'm guessing, and I do rather like the "trains of thought" idea for unsolved clues.
Edit: Also, the commentary on the tweets on the website is sorta unseemly. It's pretty insightful, but it's messy.
I kinda have obsessive compulsive tendencies about these sorts of things. >__>
Also, people can't respond directly to PP's site, which probably isn't/hasn't/won't going to make/made/make the slightest bit of difference, but if someone misses something, fire off a quick reply here, and a quick update (assuming I'm around. Which I will be most of the time because I have some nasty bug).
Plus this topic can be a catchall and a help to PP in updating her site. Case in point, Clue 6, which has a damn good answer on the table that is a DJJD tweet away from being considered solved.

Yeah, this thing is getting really out of hand this year. It's always seemed messy to me and bugged me a lot - I'm a graphic designer so certain things that I had to do with this site really bothered me because it goes against a lot of web design best practices and stuff like that. I sort of had to ignore a lot of instincts and just deal with it when I first put the site together, because in certain ways it's a unique situation, but it still bugs me. And I don't know what it is about this year, but it's bugging me even more now. I've been playing with a lot of different options and I haven't hit on anything great yet, but hopefully I'll be able to come up with something that will help a little soon.
When I first started the site, the main reason I built a separate website rather than trying to do something like this is that from a web design / readability standpoint, a message board is a horrible way to do something like this. It's a readability nightmare. Taking it off the message board gives you a lot more freedom to create contrast with color and size and stuff. Try to do it on a message board and you end up with a solid wall of text that no one wants to read.
Anyway, that's all sort of beside the point. But I don't know if it's a good idea to have two independent places doing the same thing. At the very least it's unnecessary in my mind - it's a TON of work and I hate to think of someone else putting themselves through the same work I'm doing just to end up with the same results in a different place! ;D
Anyway, as for the train of thought for each guess, I'll add 'em to the site asap. (Actually I think I did that last year so I really should have been doing it all along, probably.) And if anyone's got more suggestions for the website, feel free to message me or whatever - like I said I'm sort of going crazy trying to come up with some way to clean it up a little bit so I could use the ideas!
Edit: Ugh, that turned out to be extremely long AND to probably make me sound like a bitch. Sorry sorry sorry.
I for one think you are doing a fine PP, and do not for one second find anything about your clues page to "messy" or "spacey" KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. I found the link in your sig just fine, even as a newbie. I also find it somewhat rude to to barge into a board, step all over the toes of someone who is doing EVERYONE interested a huge favor (believe it or not there are people who don't read these boards for lack of time, or lack of interest to see it all unfold and just want the cliff notes), and then proceed to bad mouth the design and structure of previously metioned HUGE FAVOR! But that's just me.....what do I know
Well, I suppose that's fair. I'm ass when it comes to programming, and graphic design, for that matter, but from an organizational standpoint, I'm fantastic.
I feel like everyone here can benefit from your site and skill in gathering the pertinent info and my ability to read and organize info. Out of deference to the site, I'll probably close this in a while, and offer you my services in neatening things up.
I think I would prefer the website just because it's a place where I can go without having to wade through x-amount pages filled with stream-of-consciousness thoughts. PP's site is simple, direct, to-the-point, and makes it easy to figure out the guesses to the clues.
If we tried to do something like that on the board, you'd have different people posting constantly and then this thread will be come just like the other Clue threads. Some don't have the time (or patience) to scroll through pages and pages, so the site is a nice relief.

No offense, Amish, but nobody likes a kiss-ass any more than they like people who "barge in". At the very least, my intentions are for the greater good of the Cloo solving experience.

Lol. I want that on a bumper sticker.
Pepper's site does a great job for keeping up in a condensed fashion. Cokes seems to also want to have a thread here where the "top" ideas are to make it easier for DJJD. The problem with that is often what we collectively think is the best line of thought ends up completely wrong. If DJJD weren't reading everything, and only read what the majority was thinking, we'd never solve anything. See Clue threads #1,2 and 3 for proof.

I don't see why anyone would think that this thread shouldn't exist because of the website. I think having both is for the best. PP's website is simple and easy to navigate and lists guesses. This thread only lists confirmations and has the rational behind the answer, which is great.

This would be a WONDERFUL addition to your already wonderful site. IDK if anyone has thanked you, but I am thanking you.

yeah i agree with both. this is easier to find than a post by PP and then going to her sig. granted she has the general discussion clue thread, but still thats two links to click. im from america damnit, make things easy for me.

c'mon now, if you use firefox just type "r" or "roo" or something in the address bar and it'll probably pop up!
Just popped by to say that I added the reasoning behind each guess to the website - if you hold your cursor over a guess it'll pop up. And I also figured this was a good time to clean out a lot of the guesses that have been ruled out and tweets that didn't turn out to be necessary for the answer and stuff like that.
btw - cokes, by all means keep this going if you're up for it, especially since it seems like it'll be helpful for some people! (I think I was sort of misunderstanding in some sense which is why I might be contradicting myself now...)
And like I said I could totally use some fresh ideas for organizing the info on the website, so if you do think of some organizational input that would be great. ;D

unfortunately no ideas for you pep but I doo wanna say thanks for all that work you put into that, it really does help to ease my brain during this wild 2 1/2 weeks spent trying to solve these ridiculous things!
I wasn't ass kissing I was showing gratitude for the hard work.
Apparently we have different definitions of some things. Oh well. C'est la vie.
That said, I think I will keep this around, as the response has been slightly more positive than negative. I find it straightforward and condensed and it helps my brain, and perhaps a few others.
Even if some of the information is redundant to PP's site, there's no harm in this existing, especially where PP's stuff is off-site. (And besides, judging by some recurring "guesses", some people are big fans of redundancy >_>)
And again, just to clarify, never intended to barge in, step on toes, any of that bullshit. Just wanted to contribute in what I felt would be a moderately helpful fashion. Apologies, though, regardless.
I guess I'm the only one who thinks these clues are ridiculous. It was cool for '08, but at this point, it's devolved into nonsense on a massive level. I'd rather just read the lineup than have to guess at it.

I kept up with the first few clues, but now that I see everyone is all over the place and nowhere near the answers, I'm just gonna wait till next week to get the actual lineup
