IMO if he didn't win the grammy the grammy didn't make him a winner. This clue is killin me lol
Yeah, except DJJD's hint doesn't actually say he was a winner - it actually implies that he was close, but not quite: "edwin is a winner- you know, OR will help you win as you go, think think"

Ok I will accept that. I see the logic now. In that case shouldn't we be looking at nominees for R&B males from 2 years later?

Sorry while I was posting I am missing new posts coming out. I didn't know someone had Franklin in their guess. Adding A. Franklin hits this one pretty hard. Still having trouble with the whole new brand of clue thing. Can you link that with her? I wouldn't mind seeing some Aretha on the farm.

I always thought him saying edwin starr was a winner referred back to when we were still thinking about who mr. ed was supposed to represent but god knows I don't have any special handle on how djjd operates.

It should be noted that the last two times I was totally convinced of my guess and convinced others to be as well - I was COMPLETELY wrong. Wronger and wronger!

Oh yeah, I forgot to put this part down. Aretha has an album Who's Zoomin' Who. There's your Z. So now every single aspect of the clue and all hints are covered by Aretha. Confirm or deny, DJ! Please.

I expect a much bigger answer for this clue but mathematically you can cancel out the two befores i the equasion leaving you with x=2y. If x is Starr's hatching (birth, 1942 or more simply 42) y must equal 21. Abe Vigoda was born in 1921 and is also the name of a band. Also one letter missing from the word 'be' give you abe. I know I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel here but so it goes.
The star hatching is Edwin Starr - djjd already told us that. I'm not seeing how Star Death/White Dwarfs relates to Starr.
I know...I'm just hearing magical circus music in my head at this point. And any grasp of reality -- however tenuous or unrealistic -- is one step closer to sanity. Adding an "e" and walking away just seems like pure genius.
Notdarkyet, I think the connection is in the grammy awards, hence DJJD's emphasis on Edwin winning. Aretha won the same category of grammy the year after Starr did, aka 2 times before Starr did.
Edwin Hawkins (born 18 August 1943, Oakland, California) is a Grammy Award-winning American gospel and R&B musician, pianist, choir leader, composer and arranger.
Oh Happy Day was a Grammy Winner---Aretha also covered that song
Aretha Franklin had already brought strong gospel stylings to the pop charts with songs such as "Think" (1968), but a hymn had never “crossed over” before. "Oh Happy Day" soared into the US Top 5, winning a Grammy and massive sales worldwide.

I figured the thing about Edwin being a winner was just saying that was the right track - thinking about Edwin Starr would help us solve the clue, and he used the word win to make it into a play on words with Edwin. I never thought of it as being that literal that it referred to Grammys or something.
And the post from sublime that DJ JD said was on the right track included this: "Let's say Edwin Hatcher "Hatched" his "starrdom" with his single war." And that would be a necessary component of the logic if Gwar was right.
I'm not really trying to argue for Gwar because I don't want the clue to be them, but that's why I was saying I didn't see any reason they couldn't be the answer.
As for the Aretha thing...omg you guys lost me a long time ago with all that stuff. Uhh...yeah I don't know where to start, all of that confused me completely. So here's a simple question - how would that make sense with us having guessed it minus one letter?

Viciouscircle was saying that somewhere back there there is a guess that had Franklin in it. Therefor adding A would give you A. Franklin. Don't know where that post is though.

Here's the whole thing in one post.
The clue itself: Before the star (Edwin) hatched (had a hit and R&B grammy nomination with War) is 2 times before I was (Edwin's grammy nom was in 1971, so we're looking for the 1972 grammies) Aretha won an R& B grammy that year.
Hints:
We already knew Edwin Starr was key, so that's why I took the "Edwin will help you win as you go, think, think" as meaning more than what he had already told us. Edwin was almost a winner who leads to an actual winner. Think, think - Aretha song Think.
Brand New clue - Aretha song Brand New Me
Clue Z - Album Who's Zoomin Who, often referred to as just Zoomin.
Add one letter to a guess already made - Someone guessed Franklin. Add ONE letter, like an initial - A. Franklin.
Use of "one"repeatedly in that clue - She is Soul Sister #1.
I can see how ""Let's say Edwin Hatcher "Hatched" his "starrdom" with his single war." could lead more to Gwar, but there was more to that quote. I think the answer depends on how much of it djjd was referring to. What I don't get is why he would have the Winning hint, since we already knew Edwin was central, and why he would add think, think like that. Plus all the "ones" All that could mean nothing, but if so...

Hmm...I was hoping y'all had something better than that! I don't know if that really makes sense. You really need to add an entire word/name, not just a letter. I mean, I know if you say "A. Franklin" people would be able to infer who you meant, but still...sounds like a lot of wishful thinking.
I want to believe it, I really do...lol
Edit: oh awesome, viciouscircle thanks for the explanation! Hmm...it sounds a little more plausible now. I'm still kinda hung up on the adding one letter bit. If we said Franklin and Aretha was the answer, it seems more likely that he'd said we were halfway there or something. And I don't know if "soul sister #1" is really a strong enough connection to make that make sense.

In 2008, the American music magazine Rolling Stone ranked Franklin #1 on its list of The Greatest Singers of All Time.

Yeah, I mean I dismissed Gwar immediately as too obvious and not related, but when I figured out how they actually do fit, I was sure. Sure and unhappy, so I kept looking for alternatives. On the one hand, they fit very simply with the original clue. On the other hand, they have nothing to do with think/think or ones or winning or as far as I know the Brand New clue thing. I don't think the one letter being an initial is a stretch, though. At least it makes that hint more of an actual hint rather than a gimme.
