True...usually ALL the headliners are released in the first initial annoucement unless there are some complications with scheduling or if a headliner has to pull out at the last minute for other reasons (like ABB). But this has been a crazy year so who knows....they might hold a headliner open...maybe to finalize the details or such. But most likely we will get all headliners and a lot of the tent acts and some of the major second tier...but a lot of the tent acts, cafe acts and major second tier will be TBD for the second and third round of announcements.
They always release the lineup the Wed before tix go on sale "officially"...which is always on a Fri morning. Usually around the 12-14.....
Not to nitpick, but actually, the last 2 years, tix onsales were on Saturdays, and in 2008 it wasn't the same week the lineup got released...
Last year I got an email from them on Tuesday Feb 3rd, the day the lineup came out, and it said this...
"Tickets to the 2009 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival will go on sale this Saturday, February 7, at Noon Eastern time through bonnaroo.com. "
The year before, based on the lineup email, it came out on Thursday 2/7/08 and I bought my 1st tier ticket on Saturday Feb 16th at 11AM central the moment they went on sale, it was my Birthday present to myself
2008 INITIAL LINEUP IS HERE! From: Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival <info@bonnaroo.com> Reply To: Sent: Thu, Feb 07, 2008 11:08 AM
Has no one considered the reason we aren't getting the lineup next Tuesday is probably because The Who is headlining and they are waiting until after their Super Bowl performance? Same as Springsteen last year. Super Bowl on 2/1/09, lineup announcement on 2/3/09. Makes perfect sense.

So superbowl half time band = roo headliner every year? That would be pretty interesting. and the SB headliners have been really good the last few years. Mccartney, the stones, Springsteen, The Who. good stuff. I remember when I was a kid and stevie wonder did the halftime show. I think it was Packers vs. Broncos, Great halftime show, great game too.

I remember when Janet had a wardrobe malfunction and Kid Rock wore "Old Glory" as a cape.Since then the halftime show has been all classic rock, and Prince.I guess Prince could count as classic rock.Definitly he's classic.

The Who's headlining? But,the Super Bowl is 2/7.
Yes, the Super Bowl is 2/7, which would be a reason why they might not want to release the lineup on say 2/2. I was talking about '09. And no, playing the Super Bowl does not automatically get you a bid to headline Bonnaroo, just a possible coincidence two years in a row, but a plausible explanation for them not releasing it until after Super Sunday.

Sorry,I overlooked the 09 in your post.I would be extremely disappointed if Who headlined. At least the past few "classic" headliners have had current material to pull from.

does anyone know exactly when they got said email from bonnaroo telling when the line-up will be announced... don't they usually send email out a week before?
Then we can officially change the name of Groundhog Day to...
DAFT PUNK DAY!

Sorry, but I keep my "heart" button hidden away out of site!!! But if you meet me at the front rail durring DMB I would be more than delighted to show you where I keep it stashed!!!

OMG - I heard Celine Dion was going to headline
sorry - the rumors are driving me crazy and this just goes back to one of those crazy, off the wall, insane things that *I* don't see happening but I guess could - we'll all figure it out when the line up is finally released

I feel like a lot of this is wrong. The large majority of the acts are filled out with the initial lineup. The 2nd/3rd/4th/whatever round additions have gotten smaller and smaller each year. Aside from the weird situation of 2008 (BTW, ABB wasn't a headliner - however, when they dropped out, WSP was added as a headliner and Jack Johnson moved to pre-headliner status, so I can see where you were confused), they've only ever added a headliner once, and that was in 2003 where Neil Young was in the second round of artists announced.
These days, you'll get probably 60 or so artists on the initial, then maybe another 15 or so added later, plus things like the cafe acts, comedy, etc.
