For those who attended both of these epic Bonnaroo performances:
Over the past 3 years, I've often said to friends or acquaintances that Radiohead's 2006 Bonnaroo set would almost certainly go down as the greatest concert of my entire life. I've patiently waited for the DVD to be released, and I listen to the FLAC recording in its entirety probably once a month. I loved that show, and thought it would never be beat...
And then Trent Reznor decided to turn my brains inside out and blast them into the sky.
I've never been a "huge" Nails fan. I've got 14 of their songs in my iTunes, if that gives you some idea. As of Saturday morning, I was still pretty torn about seeing NIN versus Yeasayer/MGMT. I finally decided that I'd go with Nails, since it was their last show, and I can see Yeasayer at Pitchfork fest next month. It was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made, as Nails completely changed my concept of what a great concert can be. I've never honestly felt that a show could teach me as much as that experience did. Among other things, I finally "get" moshing.
I still haven't made up in my mind which show was better. They were both once-in-a-lifetime performances, but I wanted to see if any other Rooer's had any thoughts?
After this year, I would have to go with the Phish shows over the Radiohead show. I am a diehard Radiohead fan and Phish is a close second behind. I have always liked NIN and there show was unbelieveable but for me personally it will have to fall in around #5 or so on my Bonna-list. I think it all depends on personal preference.
I did go by one of the tents that was set up in centeroo where you could vote on the best headlining show over the years and it had Phish listed but this was Friday afternoon, Radiohead was winning by thousands of votes over everyone else.

i agree. phish on sunday was a religious experience for me, but i still have to edge out radiohead 06 with the best performance i've ever seen at roo. i was at NIN as well, but they would still be 3 behind radiohead and phish.
Phish and Radiohead are the greatest shows i have ever seen in my life.
Radiohead has been my favorite band for the laset 6 years now but i think i have a new one now. And I think Phish just edges Radiohead in the greatest show and moment of my life

if radiohead hadn't been my first year at roo, phish may have overtaken their show. i'm also waiting to see their shows in chicago and spac before i make a final judgement.
These are all very hard to rate in any order. Everytime I sit and think about each show I want to put it higher than the next. Tool, Radiohead, Phish and maybe Pearl Jam. All those are probably the best I have seen.
So I guess I'll go ahead and validate the original poster as far as NIN 09 set being in the same ballpark as Radiohead in 06. It has the disadvantage of having taken place on the worst possible stage for a great set at Roo to take place on. I think if it had been on the What Stage, people would be generally talking about it as the set of the fest (although a lot of us already are).
But comparing the two bands, you also have to realize that while they're both angst driven bands who sport wide influences that include a heavy dose of electronica and ambient, Radiohead is a little more versatile in the tone of their songs. They're also more accessible emotionally. So going to a Radiohead show is always going to have a much more satisfying vibe for me than going to a NIN show because the range of emotions they elicit is wider.
But I do agree they were in the same ballpark of greatness. I just prefer Radiohead in 06.

i wasn't even there and i still have to say radiohead was the best show roo has ever seen. nin was good but i don't think it was even the best nin show i have seen.
I was having this internal debate, as well... I think my friends are evenly split on this one, the four of us that saw Radiohead in 06 also saw NIN this year.
I'm in favor of the NIN set, my friend Adam calls Radiohead the best show he's ever seen, my friend Oscar says NIN, and Chris isn't sure...
This can be a serious debate here... NIN was THAT good.
If I had to rank them, for me...
1. NIN 2. Tortoise 3. Radiohead 4. Robert Plant and Allison Krauss 5. Ornette Coleman, health scare not withstanding 6. Metallica 7. The Mars Volta 8. Tool 9. Levon Helm 10. Public Enemy

ummm i think radiohead was the better show at roo but maybe because i've seen nin like a dozen times and mostly in clubs so even though that set was great it wasn't the best nin show i ever saw. i think oysterhead was the best show i ever saw at bonnaroo though
Well, Radiohead is one of my favorite bands ever. Of bands that are still together and making music, they probably rank about #2 or #3. I was interested in Bonnaroo in 2004 and 2005, but after I heard about the once-in-a-lifetime show they put on in 2006, I told myself I absolutely had to get down there, by hook or by crook. I'm sure if I had been there, that would be my number one.
I've only been to Bonnaroo last year and this year, but between those two years, My Morning Jacket in '08 and Nine Inch Nails in '09 stand out in my mind as the two most epic performances I've seen on the farm - although MIA and Public Enemy are not far behind.

I would say the only show that Rivaled Radiohead in 06 was Phish's Friday night performance...Absolute magc in the crowd and on stage... but it was not as good, close... but no cigar...
Nine Inch Nails can't be compared I feel... too different of a vibe in the show and audience... if anybody topped Radiohead... it was the next year with TOOL hands down...
Best Bonnaroo Shows Ive Seen: 1. Radiohead 2. Tool 3. Nine Inch Nails 4. The Mars Volta '07 5. Phish (Friday Latenight Set)

I've been a NIN fan for a very long time, and I was pretty bored at their show. Dunno what it was, they just couldn't keep me interested. TOOL 07 was far more epic in my opinion. Radiohead beat them both, and I was VERY happy to see Phish playing in the top form that they used to consistently play in around the mid to late 90's. Mastodon needs to come back and play a longer set on a bigger stage, preferably late night. Here's my top 5:
1. Radiohead 06 2. Widespread Panic 02 (The show with Dottie Peoples) 3. TOOL 07 4. Phish Friday 09 5. Govt Mule 07
it's really tough to rank these things. I'd like to give it a year or so before I compare Phish and NiN to past 'roo shows....
But right now, I think, for me, it goes 1) Radiohead 2) Phish 3) NiN .... all three were incredibly good in their own ways. Radiohead for its beauty, phish for its euphoria, and NiN for its intensity. All for their emotion.
It's no coincidence that I've seen 4 of my 5 favorite shows out of hundreds at 'roo, if I include MMJ last year.
Daft Punk on the Alive '07 tour is the only show I've seen outside of the farm that's in the same league.. and that's why 'roo needs to get them next year!
