Okay, so every paycheck I allow myself to buy one thing for myself. I'm in the market for a record player. Has there been a buying guide for record players posted on here anywhere? I've already got a ton of vinyl, but nothing to play it on.
My vote is for the Audio Technica LP120. Costs about $200. Of course if you can afford the Rega, get the Rega.
Oh, neat. I might look into getting the Audio Technica - I'm also wanting to get a pair of headphones by them. Now I have to decide which one to get first.
The U-Turn Orbit Plus is currently sitting in a box at my apt. I plan on having it set up this weekend. I'll let you know my initial thoughts once it's up and running.
Seems to be really well made and is at a very attractive price point.

Yeah, the LP120 is about the cheapest one you can find that's upgradeable. There are some decent $100 options out there, but you can't really tweak them at all. With the LP120, it's a good durable base model, then if you're feeling frisky you can upgrade the cartridge or the phono pre-amp later. Plus the fact that it's on basically every "best of" list helps the resale value if you eventually decide to get something high end.
Goddammnit. I can't afford all these awesome things. Is this one limited or anything? I'll have to look into it.
WTF it's sold out already? Only available is a "ten songs from live at Carnegie Hall" vinyl? Damn.
That sold out quick for a vinyl set. I don't see why he doesn't sell more. If you sell out of your inventory within an hour, you need to release more! I just happened to get on FB to see that notification to get one. I am still hoping he releases more of the cat sweaters. :/
Ryan really needs to make it possible for a non crazy person to get a hold of one of these releases. Would love to have owned this.
EDIT: itrainmonkeys i love your back to back reactions: "damn it so much cool vinyl stuff I can't afford all this... wtf its sold out? this is bullshit."

I almost pointed out that this was a good kind of frustration haha. I can't really afford the box set vinyl price but I damn sure started to look at things I could sell or ways I could make it work. It's a blessing in disguise.

Playing on the theme of redacted government documents and expanding it into a full, clothbound binder with the entirety of the Magna Carta…Holy Grail album spread across eight 7” 45rpm records, this piece conceived by Grammy-nominated designer Brian Roettinger is cryptographically breathtaking. It is limited to 1000 numbered sets (though not all will be released and sold on Friday) and released in conjunction with Roc Nation.
We’ll have a limited-run Sledgehammer Enamel Pin as well as a Jack the Expander Patch to commemorate. We’ll also have a handful of new, non-limited items: A new Nashville Logo T-Shirt, a Nashville Logo Kids T-Shirt, a Third Man Books Tote Bag, and a Tennessee Enamel Pin.
Friday only, we will also have every Blue and Green Series 7” at a nice price for $5, let customers “roll the dice” for a discount, and make Record Booth recordings for HALF PRICE!

Hmmmm
Pass. All of that sounds awesome but I've gotta like the album before I buy some crazy special edition thing. MCHG was pretty forgettable in my book. I would like to get a look at this Nashville t-shirt though.
Also, I reeeeaaally want to get in that record booth, unleash an awesome fart and have that pressed to vinyl. Is that frowned upon?
edit: Forgot to add--I hope this hints at the rumored Jay-Z/Jack White collab seeing the light of day but I am not going to get my hopes up.
Yea, I wish they did this with Blueprint or The Black Album.
My money would instantly disappear from my account if it was either of those. I'd even pay a considerable amount for Watch The Throne too. Not the $150 for that one version of it but like a Third Man Vault quality release.
I didn't like MCHG the first several times I listened to it but it turned out to be a great album that's more "fun" than anything else he's done. It's not meant to be thought-provoking or lyrical... just entertaining. I mean it will never make a top album list... but it's an enjoyable piece of work to listen to once you've listened to it 10+ more times. I have a feeling he had a blast making that album and didn't care what reviewers, music nerds, etc etc thought.
I disagree - there are a ton of albums I have gained more respect for after multiple 10+ listening attempts. And that's not to say I hated it the first ten times... :-)
I didn't say anything about gaining more respect for something. I said enjoying it. If you can't find enough reasons to enjoy and respect something in the first couple of spins - something worth bringing you back for a third and a fifth and a tenth spin - then why bother?
I think it's when you have hints of enjoying the fun here and there that keeps pulling you in.... and then you connect with it and grow into enjoying it. I hated Swans last album until I listened to it several times, too. Same for Wars on Drugs. All of those grew on me after several, several attempts. I have to see some potential in an album to attempt it that many times, though.
So who has experience with selling vinyl on ebay? I've managed to get quite a collection of autographed vinyl albums over the last several years and am wondering if I should try cashing in on any of it. I have no idea what to list any of it for.
Here is my autographed collection. Anyone interested in obtaining some of this?
Glen Hansard - Rhythm & Repose Volcano Choir - Repave The Hawk in Paris - Freaks Andrew W.K. - I Get Wet Jars of Clay - Self-titled, Much Afraid, 20 Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga Sam Smith - In the Lonely Hour John Mark McMillan - Borderland, The Medicine Paper Route - Absence, The Peace of Wild things Nickel Creek - A Dotted Line The Digital Age - Evening : Morning Gungor - I Am Mountain, a creation litury (live) Mike Doughty - Circles, Super Bon Bon, and The Very Best Of Soul Coughing Dawes - Stories Don't End Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls Mutemath - Odd Soul Ben Folds Five - The Sound of the Life of the Mind My Morning Jacket - Circuital Leagues - self-titled Coldplay - Parachutes

I really have no idea what to ask for any of these. I've put up several of them on ebay and only get ridiculous offers. I was hoping to get about $3,000 out of all of them but have yet to sell any. Feel free to make me an offer of what you think is fair. I paid $200 for the MMJ and got the Glen Hansard album signed in person, so only paid $25 for that.
Vinyl Me, Please's April pressing is Menomena - Friend and Foe (2007, Barsuk Records).
Also have the sweet Ray Charles album that I reserved a copy of; this is my first month of membership. Got the Courtney Barnett album too. This is gonna be bad for my wallet but great for my ears and for living the good life.
