you really need to watch that whole NIN video to realize it though, sure Phish will be awesome and all but there is nothing in all concerts that can compare to what NIN does

I've been in the photo pit during NIN's last tour and got about 5 good shots out of nearly 200. There's definitely a lot going on there.
But that said, NIN's show loses something because it's tied too much to the frantic pace of their music. Phish, on the other hand, how a show that's like a living, breathing organism. I'd take Phish's any day.
I've seen Phish and NIN's. NIN's is awesome but, I'm tellin ya, it cannot match the beauty and synchronicity of what Phish does. Their light show is an art form in an of itself. Like was said above. IT'S ALIVE!!!
Unfortunately, I'm one of the people who can say I saw Kanye's Roo performance (only out of sheer curiosity) last year and I can also safely say it was one of the most disappointing light shows ever. Not to mention the MOST disappointing shows ever. He proves it's possible to go way overboard with the light setup. 3 fucking hours to set that shit up.
But yes, I definitely cannot wait to see Phish's lights!

The thing is NIN is done with that tour and light show. Their performance is much more stripped down now.
and Kuroda does all the lights on the spot for Phish shows......he has been with them for so long that he understands where the band is going and where they are about to go with the show....it's absolutely nuts.......
the best statement yet is that Phish's lights are a living breathing organism.....it's true, that shit has a mind of its own

Is there a video of what the expected NIN light show will look like? Because I thought we weren't sure what it was going to look like.
If this was Lights In The Sky it would be a no contest. Seriously a no contest. Just having some colored lasers that go with the music doesnt add up to all the effects and layers the NIN show had. But i fully expect the late night phish to take it this year, but it wouldnt surprise me to see NIN pull something crazy out.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
^^^just saw Ghostland Observatory and could not agree more. Lasers were pretty, but I was bored in 10 minutes. NIN on the other hand. WOW! When I was not yanking someones FOOT out of my back , it was awesome.
i dont know if you have seen phish yet, but i think its pretty unfair to say NIN has the better light show because you weren't impressed by Ghostlands
Misinterpretation-I haz it.
I did not know we were definitively deciding, just made an observation about the post above me.
Clarification: Ghostland laser show-boring after 10 minutes NIN light show-Great, complete with mad shoving. Phish light show-have not seen so can not judge, but will in June ;D
the lightshow engulfs you like a giant creature stirring up in the dark from the madness of interstellar space travel like jams. it grabs you by the brain and pulls you into it sucking your soul into another dimension that is indescribable by words. you will remain there, in this other dimension, for the duration of the show as the lights pull your mind and soul this way and that forever altering the way you think and feel for the rest of your life. then ever so delicately this massive beast of lights will place you back into your body and let you leave the venue wondering what just happened....
"Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man's original virtue. It is through disobedience and rebellion that progress has been made." Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900), The Soul of Man Under Socialism
"You're either on the bus or off the bus." Ken Kesey
"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." Hunter S. Thompson
From what I've seen of Phish's Hampton shows, their lights are pretty cool. It's truly unique for the lights to be such a big part of the show for a jam band. Usually, a good rule of thumb is that the better the light show the less spontanaity there is in that show. I think it's one of the reasons NIN dumped the Lights In The Sky setup.
I do think Phish needs to embrace some of the new technologies, specifically l.e.d.'s.

The answer is CK5.
Chris Kuroda is simply one of the best in the business. When Phish disbanded he was hired all over the place, from the Crowes, to Mule to Aerosmith. He is a lighting design master, and is considered by fans to be the 5th member of the band, thus the moniker, CK5. He is a true genius on the lightboard, and when you see it for the first time, you will be blown away.
The lights at Hampton were the Best I've ever seen them for Phish. I've seen Tool, Radiohead, Daft Punk all within the last 2 years and all of these bands have intense, imaginative lighting arrays, but they all lack the spontaneity of one Chris Kuroda. You'll just have to see it to understand what I'm talking about. You might have to see it a few times before it actually clicks and you understand what he is pulling off up there.
Chris Kuroda, quite literally, jams on the light board. His lights are the visual embodiment of the music they overhang.

They had them in the setup at hampton, just not on all the time. They used them in the yem vocal jam. They also had this amazing disco ball effect that worked really well indoors. It was definitely new technology, I have never seen those lights. They couldn't do it outside, but for about 5-7 minutes, the lights for Harry Hood were simply unreal. They swallowed the entire coliseum up with diamond-like rays of purple and white light.
On their last tour they had tons of crazy costumes and props and stuff. At one show they had an actual horse on stage. I don't know what they will do at roo but hopefully it will be just as crazy.

CK5 is the answer indeed, at least as far as I am concerned. Phish doesn't glow in the dark, they make enough light and noise to actually make the dark slink away with it's tail between its legs.
Does anyone know about Of Montreal's setup? I heard they have a pretty unique/interesting show.
They have some pretty cool lights, but what makes their show so unique and AMAZING is all the costume changes and sets on the stage. It's more of an entire opera than a concert. I'm really hoping KBarnes comes on stage riding a white horse like he did in NYC.
