Nails have some pret-ty cool visuals going. I've seen them four times (indoors twice and outdoors twice) and each time the visual aspect of the show has been incredible. I have yet to see Phish, but I think these two will steal the show.
about 5 mins in when the jam starts getting thick... the lights start going off... click on it and watch it in HD on youtube. the lights are much more appealing in HD.
Phish's light show looks great, and will probably be the most complex one on the farm, unless NiN brings the lights-in-the-sky rig for some sort of one-off thing.
The only reason I would even consider this is because the 'roo date was announced way before any of their other NA/europe dates. Maybe one last time to film that rig in HD??

That guy's videos are the tits in HD. Some more brain candy for all of you:
Those NIN visuals look really great, too- even if they are kind of scripted and relatively static they are awesome looking.
Unlike most rock shows, the visuals for about 40 percent of the show (including "Only") aren't pre-rendered. There's no staging, no pantomiming by band members: It's all interactive, live and rendered on the fly. According to Reznor, it all started with a relatively simple idea.
"I wanted to see how I could use video as an instrument," he says, "and try to really make the stage feel like it's organic -- like it's part of the overall set."
With the song "Only," for instance, the front, convex screen starts out as solid static. On Reznor's side of the display, a laser above him detects whenever he crosses a vertical plane paralleling the screen. On the floor, a piece of tape and two tiny LED lights let him know exactly where that plane is.
As Reznor intersects that plane with his hand or body, the laser tracks his X and Y coordinates. The "brain" box then tells the particles to spread out to a predetermined dispersal pattern. Reznor says: "Then it follows me around. If I leave the plane, it fills back in. If I push through, it comes back out."

I saw my first Phish show at Hampton this month and I have to tell those of you who have never seen Phish- fucking INCREDIBLE light show. Enjoy your time on the farm, eat some portebellas or something, it'll be a magical time

wow! that's amazing. so cool that he set all that up so he could control it like that. just think of the possibilities of this if it was developed further. you could have a touch screen computer that had a program that played a specific set of lights and displays to each song you were playing and could que it up. then when that song played the program could bring up a window that had seperate controls to the way the displays were going so you could change it up on the fly.

Lights were never something I paid that much attention to (probably because I usually see dark gloomy club shows) but over the past couple of years they'vce become one of my favorite parts of a live performance. Looking forward to seeing Phish even more now just for that reason.

phish and nine inch nails light show are both insanely good but they are two different types of light shows, each fit their own music perfectly and can cause brain-gasms
I am going to tell you right here right now that the best visual shows this year will come from NIN and Phish, no questions about it. Pretty Lights, although is a good visual shows, will not even come close to the scale that NIN and Phish will bring. He is probably going to be playing in the Discoteque or so small tent. TV on The Radio will bring a good show as well.
Phish will visually blow you away with there shear amount of varying colors while NIN will bring a more technologically advanced show to the stage. Strobs, LED's Props, Etc.
So far without a doubt the best visual show in Bonnaroo history would probably be the Tool show in 2007. Bonnaroo needs more LASERS, everyone in the arena can enjoy. The Radiohead show was up there too.
Now Ghostland Observatory last year was right up there with the top visual Roo shows ever. They just have it on a smaller scale.
I TOTALLY agree with you man!!!!! THe Phish rainbow is excellent! NIN is for sure killer! TOOL in 07 melted my face off! I was JUST watching that 2 nights ago all over YouTube (hard to find one with good sound, but check em out people - the stage and light show was to die for)!!!!! Yes - GHOSTLAND Observatory's lazers last year where awesome!!!! You are at all of the right places too I see!!!

Phish in Hampton was the best light show I've ever seen, by far. it was wild. I saw Floyd in 94 and Gilmour at radio city a few years ago, saw the grateful dead at their last spectrum run, I saw Radiohead this year and at the Tower theatre, 5 years ago, roger waters do the wall, Tool at Roo, Flips at Roo with the spaceship. NONE of that was anything like the lights at Hampton, not even close. It was a game changer. Shows were great on their own but the display kuroda put on with that gear was nutty. I hope they one up themselves late night!

You guys really need to stop talking about the Lights In The Sky lighting. It was truly amazing but it's unlikely we will see it on the farm.
I think we may see it. They may feel compelled to redeem themselves after the Kanye fiasco last year.
Trent Reznor, NIN, and all other affiliates have absolutely nothing to do with Kanye. Why would they feel the need to redeem themselves by bringing back a stage set up that they already retired??
And no, Bonnaroo/Superfly will not say "You can only play if you bring back the Lights in the Sky..."
NIN's light show will kick major arse, no doubt. But this just struck me as silly
Seen Phish 10 times exactly and their set up is otherworldly every time. As people above have already stated, Kuroda is the 5th member of the band.
For those interested here is an interview with him in Hampton about their newest set up, and what to expect for the June tour.
That said, the videos people have posted of NIN LITS look AMAZING and if what Reznor brings to the farm is as good as what I've seen there, Phish will have some serious competition... a competition in which there can only be one winner... the fans!
i'm not trying to put phish or their light guy down, but you guys act like he is the only one that does this. lots of bands have people that do lights on the fly. tool does it. camilla grace(adam jones' wife) does this for tool's shows.

i think the difference is that Tool shows are more or less the songs from the album played live while Phish shows are notoriously improvised. I think its different syncing up lights "on the fly" when the band is playing the CD than when the band is just up there playing whatever they feel like doing.

yeah, well at the same time whenever somebody makes a claim that Phish is better than another band at any random aspect they are told to get off their high horse and quit being closed minded about anything other than Phish.
I think losing karma is far less frustrating, personally

no but they can say we will pay you X amount of money more if you bring Lights in the Sky.
i think its possible we get it. as of now this might be the last north american show that NIN does. after bonnaroo they are in europe the rest of the summer. and add that with Reznors statement about this being the last time we will see NIN in a long time.
so to me, i think trent may want to pull something special.

Sorry but I have seen several Tool shows on a single tour and anyone that has will tell you that you are wrong on this. Their lightshow is amazing but it is all very much rehearsed. Much like the Flaming Lips the first show on the tour is not very different from the last show on the tour.
Kuroda is playing an instrument with his lights. Its a different show everytime.
^sure it's rehearsed, but Spiraleyes (camilla and robyn) still preform with the band live at every show.
but bands like Phish, Tool, NIN, have such unique and intimate lightshows it's very hard to compare them against each others. It's like trying to argue what band makes the best music.
