I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high.

More people should be excited for this band . . . but it's okay, that just leaves more room for me to throwdown at their set. Finally some real punk and not that sissy pop-punk that all the indie kids are in to.

Not to rain on the parade here. But I'm just not liking the cd. I got it in at the station, liked it on first listen, but then I lost interest the more I listened to it. They just seemed like a boring major label alternative album that's being thrown in my face constantly on websites and magazines. Pretty much the best thing I heard about them at Coachella was that they're lead singer crowd surfed all the way back to back of the crowd.
Bonnaroo Detective what sissy pop-punk bands are you talking about? Depending on who you're comparing them too, I don't see how you can see this band as "real" punk, whatever that means today.

i think they are absolutely "real" punk. Obviously you have no clue what that is today when you question their status based on what they sound like (which is a matter of opinion), and have no reference on what they represent. And obviously you only listened to it once or twice otherwise you would have digested the lyrics and you would have realized that they are absolutely fucking punk.
And that one thing you heard about them that is the best thing is indeed on of their best things- their live show. They always bring it, not just at Coachella. Go Youtube these mfers. Holy shit. Drop the Pitchfork attitude and give the song "Lotus" a serious listen. Then the rest. Also, they are young as fuck.
Hell yes Cage the Elephant is back! I'm super pumped for this set! I was so disappointed I had to miss them in '07, really glad they're coming back. Lots of energy, great stage presence, as said above- good lyrical content, aaand beats in which to groove

To each his own - have fun at some other show then . . . like I said, more room for me to throwdown.
And if you don't get "real" punk, then you just don't get it. If someone has to explain it to you, then you aren't going to understand.
I have heard a couple of their songs on sirius. They aren't bad, but will have to be conflict free for me to catch them. This "real" punk thing though is irritating, hardcore just does not own thegenre created by the Ramones.

^ I didn't mean to suggest that because they were on the "hard" side that it makes them legitimately "real" punk. It is about their attitude and approach to their music and live shows, in addition to their actual "sound". I don't really consider CtE to be hardcore; they are something like indie-punk, without that lame indie feel.

And obviously you only listened to it once or twice otherwise you would have digested the lyrics and you would have realized that they are absolutely quacking punk.

Drop the Pitchfork attitude and give the song "Lotus" a serious listen. Then the rest. Also, they are young as quack.
Just because the band says in their first song on their album things like, "and im a phoney in disguise, tryin to make the radio" (it sounds like he is by signing to Jive)
"if they listened to the words they'd find the message that's beneath"
doesn't mean you have to repeat them verbatim to me. To me their words just seem hollow.
Alright here's my thing with them. I'm not trying to give them the pitchfork treatment, because there a lot of times I disagree with them and the way they look at certain records, My Morning Jacket's Evil Urges comes to mind, but I couldn't even if I tried, because they haven't even bothered to review the record yet.
When I think of Cage the Elephant they sound more like a rocked out Jason Mraz,in the way the guy rap-sings, and not in a good Faith No More or RHCP way. If I can classify them as anything, they would be southern rock, but that to me is a disservice to good southern rock. In fact you when you get their cd, and put it into itunes, the genre that the band classifies themselves as is Rock.
Punk today is a wasteland, there is the crap being passed off as punk that play Warped Tour to all the tweens, but there is good stuff still around. Bands like Fucked Up or No Age have kept some sort of punk torch alive.
Fucked Up because they release tons of music on 7" which is an throwback to what old punk bands like Black Flag used to do, generally play the shit out of their songs, are on a label with a lot of creative freedom (Matador.)
No Age because they have the DIY attitude with their all ages venue The Smell, playing tons of shows, and even have the respect of punk godfather Bob Mould of Husker Du who they're going to play Husker Du songs with at ATP. Not to mention once again the independent label where no one is looking over their shoulder trying to make them as approachable as possible.
If you like Cage the Elephant great, you'll have more room at their show because I'm not going to be there. However don't say I haven't given them the proper chance.

so let me get this straight pitchfork. one of your arguments that they are not punk is based on what itunes says? im out. you have your opinion, ill have mine. well leave it at that for the sake of my sanity. thanks for the extra elbow space anyways there pitchfork.

So you just took one of my many arguments, and are completely ignoring the others in which you would have to have some basic knowledge of music today to decipher?
Once again, if you like the band great, you'll have more room at the show. Sorry I tried to have an actual argument about music and not just resort to calling you names. "Pitchfork" (is that supposed to be an insult?)

many arguments? what that they sound like jason mraz? you spend most of your post wasting my time about why fucked up and no age are real punk as if A.) anyone would be impressed at what you think you know and B) you had any clue what you were talking about anyways. Decipher? what are you talking about? No one is talking about those bands at all. you try to hard.
and you think a band is punk because they use vinyl? as if that matters at all. Oingo boingo will be releasing an album on vinyl tomorrow. oh man. they are so punk.

pitchfork
I thought you said you were done with the argument?
1. Don't break your Macbook Air.
2. I'm not saying you need to be impressed by my knowledge of bands that I consider punk, I was just giving examples to counter your cage the elephant fan-boy stance.
3. I'm not saying a band needs to release their music on vinyl for me to consider them punk, but the specific way F*cked Up release their music recalls early punk artists.

god dammit. No clue what number one means. at all. which i guess i should be expecting from your posts anyways since it seems there is always at least one thing that just makes no sense at all.
and still with the wasting of time. your quacked up and no age references have zero bearing on the conversation. they are not counter points at all. just a pathetic attempt to act like you know what youre talking about now that you have the internet at your fingertips. who gives a nuts if it recalls early punk artists. no depression- how in the F.UCK does that have anything to do with cage the elephant. see what i mean? your pressing.
and if anything i am a mars volta fan boy. get it right pitchfork.

Once again, so you can understand it. I bring up other bands to show what I think of today when I think of punk bands. It has to do with Cage the Elephant because I really don't think they're punk. You may have a different definition of punk, that's not to say that I am wrong or you are right. Punk is such a contestable word around music because it was hard to define in the first place, and now it's even tougher to figure out without any real leader in the genre.

this seems like a reasonable point to put this argument to sleep. no hard feelings no depression. if anything i thank you for the stimulation during this boring sunday. i respect your opinion, but that being said, ill save a spot for you at the show just in case.

Exactly I wasn't trying to piss anybody off, it's just fun to argue music on the internet because most of my friends don't care enough about it. Also, I've been procrastinating writing a paper.
I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high.
i heard rest for the wicked on the radio the other day and to me the first thought i had was it was citizen cope to rock music, im looking forward to seeing what they got live,
