I haven't seen RIP! but I can attest that the others are all really good, especially the Paradise Lost series. There's going to be a new documentary about them now that they've been freed.
Oh awesome. I remember seeing it listed on IMDB a couple years back but for some reason had it in my head that film was never finished. Going to watch that one asap. The one I was referring to is this:
"In the darkness hundreds of glowsticks streaked the air like tracer shots in war. Giant inflatables bounced over dozens of light sabers pointed skyward. Stuffed animals impaled on sticks danced above the hot crowds, puppeted by someone just given ecstasy by a friend made seconds before."
I won't go much into the format, other than you'll either like it or won't. It took a bit to get used to but I honestly didn't mind it. One of my friends I went with hated it though.
Anyway, I thought the movie was fantastic. Obviously it's a much lighter movie in terms of plot and mood, but it was still amazing to be back in Middle Earth. Martin Freeman deserves an Oscar nom as Bilbo, he was fantastic. And Ian McKellen was as good as ever. The sound and score were amazing. I can understand why a lot of the critics aren't feeling it, but I love Middle-Earth and the original trilogy too damn much too care about the flaws this film was bound to have from the start. Overall- not as good as the original trilogy, but I don't think anyone really expected it to be. Just a great fantasy epic from the master himself.
And a battle of storm gods might be the most epic thing I've ever seen on film.
Not a LOTR fan, by any means... I can appreciate the craft that went into the latest trilogy of movies, and I love Jackson's early b-movies far more than anything he's done since the mid 90s.
It really looks good enough to go see even if you don't care for the franchise? I've never seen any 3d movie in theaters.

Exactly. It's more like an event than anything. The Hobbit is slightly more light hearted than LOTR making this film just an overall fun experience. If you haven't seen a 3D film in theaters definitely see this one.
Saw Flight a few days ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Not knowing it had to don with a drunk pilot I found it humorous that I smuggled a bottle of gin in with Audra lol
The Hobbit. I liked it quite a bit, but if you've read the book you know that the movie ends about 1/2 way through the book. Does anyone else know if they're going to have a part 2?

There will be a part 2 next December "The Desolation of Smaug" and a part 3 the December after "There and Back Again".

Did anyone else hate the 48 fps on the hobbit? It bounced between strikingly beautiful and unwatchable. Something about it was so OFF, It was terribly distracting. And it just did not look like middle earth

It was a bit distracting for me at first. The prologue I barely payed attention to because I was trying to adjust to the strange format. But after a while I really thought it started to enhance the 3D. Yeah the CGI seemed a bit more cartoonish, but the New Zealand landscapes were unreal in that format.
As Maynard already said, it was an event movie. Jackson already has his Oscar, he just wanted to do something new with something he loves. All I can say is James Cameron eat your heart out.

Going to see The Hobbit right after I get off work. I am going for the full IMAX 3D extravaganza because Druid made me aware that it is the only format that is running the first 9 minutes of the new Star Trek beforehand. I have been planning out my fluid intake today so that I won't have to get up during the movie. In conclusion, regarding the "nerd of the year" title...

I've already explained the breakdown of the films. I win nerd of the year on that alone.

2D Hobbit showed Star Trek Into Darkness preview at my theater. shiz they bombarded us with sci-fi movie previews. Oblivion, After Earth, Into Darkness, etc. Looks like Into Darkness will add another "bad guy getting trapped halfway through" data point for the year too: Hollywood, plz.

Considering my 'Roo ticket was my only christmas present this year, this is the closest thing to a gift I'll actually get on Dec. 25. And that is more than enough.

As far as I understand, Hurt Locker was fiction whereas Zero Dark Thirty tries to stay close to actual events as you could for something of that nature. I'm not aware of any real connection aside from having the same director.

I think Kathryn Bigelow will make a significantly different movie. She's been around since the mid-80s and Hurt Locker was a character drama. Nothing makes it look like Zero Dark Thirty is going to be that type of movie. It's more of an event driven film. I expect it to fall way more into the action genre.

I understood that part of the equation (fact vs. fiction). I was talking more on the lines of how closely related the subject matter is. And the fact that it's the same for back to back projects. Obviously there will be some differences, it just seems like such an odd thing to want to do such a similar film right away. Granted if I won an Oscar I'd probably go with the "if it isn't broke don't fix it" routine, too.

Well put. There's a much larger base audience for this film as opposed to Hurt Locker when it originally came out. I could see her really trying to appeal to that by making it more action-accessible.

I just got back from the Hobbit. I will break it down as such:
IMAX 3D = awesome. The extended Star Trek trailer has me extra pumped.
48fps = not awesome. For some reason, what it did to the picture reminded me of made for TV movies at times. I'm not even sure what that means myself. I think it made for the whole film to look fake at portions, and I felt it was distracting in the action sequences. I wanted to ask if anyone noticed some portions where movement looked weird? For example, at the very beginning, Bilbo moves faster than he should like you had the 1.5x fast forward on.
The Hobbit - I thought it was good but not great. Since they are making three movies out of a book that is the smallest in the series, Jackson was able to go more into depth with the story. I think fans of the book will be really pleased with the movie overall, but it may have less crossover appeal to people who were just fans of the movies. I nodded off some during the movie, but I think that was because of staying up late watching football and getting up early for work and not the movie.
