I, too, got my subscription to Paste for $1. It's usually a cut above most music magazines, too. I really liked the article from Ben Gibbard of Death Cab...
I thought it was a great commercial for Bonnaroo. Just to run down the Roo artists mentioned...
Best of Rock 2008:
Best Breakthrough - My Morning Jacket Best Metal Band - Mastodon Best Rookies of 2008 - Vampire Weekend (among others) Best Festival - Bonnaroo Best Punk Band - Against Me! Best Tribute Band - Zappa Plays Zappa Best Jam Session - Levon Helm's Ramble
Radiohead was named Best Festival band and the accompanying article starts like this.
" The best live band in rock played its greatest concert ever on June 17th, 2006 at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival."
^^Smite all you want. I was merely pointing out that what you brought up as some sort of phenomenal connection between the Bonnaroo lineup and Rolling Stone covers is actually just something obvious and not worth mentioning.
or just being a dickbag. call it what you want.
So being right equals being a dickbag? This is news to me.
I have a lifetime sub to RS too - all in all, I like the magazine. I am a huge fan of Tiabbi (check out his recent article on the evangelical movement...) and usually agree with the music reviews. basically, I read all the reviews and use them to see what I decide to acquire.
Spin is way too indie for my liking. about half the time i have no idea who the bands are they are talking about. and they seem to suffer from pitchforkitis - they are always hyping these bands as the next best thing...and then you never hear of them ever again. or they reference the stylings of unknownband1 in the review of unknownband2 as a way to make a valid comparison.
i dont read the other mags, so i cant say if i like them or not.
but i have noticed the bonnaroo/recent artiles connection too. i didnt know they were sponsors though...

I don't think Rolling Stone is a sponsor. Not sure where the others got their info from. I think Relix is the magazine sponsor. But maybe Rolling Stone got involved when MTV and Six Flags bought Bonnaroo.
RS sold me on roo years ago with an article that mentioned vendors selling chocolate covered mushrooms on a table.

I like Spin for all the reasons you hate it.
i had a subscription for a while to SPIN and grew to hate the way that they really seemed to put down all the stuff i liked... and if i listened to what they reviewed highly... i thought it was stupid
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

I also wondered what interest RS must have in bonnaroo after reading their "Best of Rock 2008". Did not realize they are a sponsor but it makes perfect sense. I couldn't figure out why LZ got Best Reunion since the London reunion happened in decemeber 2007 and they've already said it's not gonna happen in 2008...just felt like salt in the wound...but I can't really think of another nominee...
"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio."
