I've been really curious how his shows will be. Can you explain? Like was there live instrumentation?
Due to the lighting, it was really hard to see what all is was doing on stage. He has a few tables with a laptop and a couple other pieces of equipment. And there was a sax for a moment. But live instruments were not really the point. I think the live aspect has to do with the sound experiments and jams he does within his original compositions. It was far removed from a DJ set and a really unique experience for me. I have not seen an electronic set like it before.
Seeing this in Providence, RI. Would you recommend being as close to the stage as possible, or further away to take in the lights?
Beach Slang as "Quiet" Slang last Sunday. Got the chance to hang out with James for a fair bit of the show before he went on. Stand up guy who can reach into your chest and punch your heart in the kindest way. It was just him and his electric guitar, and it was amazing. Also i bought way too much merch. Including a cassette tape mixtape of 5 incredible covers, including my favorite Dramarama. Ugh. It was too good. Also my last official show at The Masquerade. Fortunately I had shed all my tears at the Wrecking Ball fest, so it was a great send off.

My most likely last Masquerade show was Tuesday with Preoccupations. Small possibility I see Black Lips there tomorrow. My buddy said that after Wrecking Ball, it has been like returning to party after you said bye to everybody yo get your keys.
Also, do you live in East Atlanta? I think I saw you on Nextdoor.

I think a mid point would be best so you get a bit of both. I was back against the soundboard so the lights were cool but I couldn't really see what he was doing. Towards the end of the show, the crowd thinned out and I was able to see Nico easier, which I enjoyed better (or the timing was just right for it).

Sorry to butt in on all the good show discussion. Do any of you Atlanta folks know of anything interesting to do next Wednesday? I'll be making my first visit to the city and state before heading down to Hula the next day. I thought about catching S U R V I V E at The Earl or maybe just hitting up a dive. I'd love some suggestions for midweek entertainment or must try food options.

The Earl is great. I think you've already found what you're looking for.

Agreed. The Earl's food is good, too. Maybe not a must try, but good. There's a bunch of restaurants in East Atlanta Village that are walking distance. My favorite is a Vietnamese place called Soba. Also, in EAV is 529. If you wanted something to do after the Earl, they have live music until late. On the opposite, north east, side of town is Terminal West who has Bob Moses that night.
I saw MMJ last night. It was my 11th time seeing them. Last night was so different though. First of all I went by myself and I realized that almost every other time I've seen them we were with a big group of inforooers. Also most of those times we were in a group in the pit. Last night I had a seat on the Mezzanine level of a very small theater. It was the smallest place that I've seen them play. Most of the times I've seen them have been at festivals or amphitheaters. I was also completely sober. It was just a very difference experience. I found myself just looking around at everyone else enjoying the show. I normally am dancing and jumping around and singing at the top of my lungs. Last night for the most part I was just taking it all in. Man, this band is amazing. It doesn't matter when/where they play, it's always an incredible show. There's always a couple of songs I've never seen them play. There's songs that make me go crazy every single time. I definitely think they're my favorite band to see live.
Just came in here to say that I am seeing them tonight. Glad to hear they were good.
What did you think?
Good energy and they sounded great. It was a really good show. Minor complaint would be that they didn't play Total Life Forever and having to watch Bear Hands was pretty painful

Any favorites from last night? I see they played Wish You Were Here, which is quacking epic.

I was going to list a couple favorites but I'll say everything from Lowdown on. They go on these epic runs of songs and when they are in the midst of one of those, I don't think there's anything better. Last night was the first time I've seen them play Picture Of You and Tyrone and I just looked through all the shows I've seen on setlist.fm and that's the first time I've seen them play Lowdown.
Saw grouplove last night. Was nothing great but it was a fun show.
I thought the 2012 Sunday show at Roo was pretty fun. Not much into the newer stuff they have put out, but it's good to know they are still an enjoyable live act.

I skipped Bear Hands for that reason. They were pretty boring. Glad you enjoyed!

That's why I love MMJ. Really wish I could have went to the Asheville show last week.

Any chance you're going to the Christmas Jam?
Not going to Christmas Jam. Not sure when the next Asheville show will be.
I went to Classixx and Tiger & Woods DJ sets last night. Both sets were fantastic and made me regret skipping Classixx's silent disco set at Roo in 2014.

Caught DJ Shadow a few weeks ago. Highly recommend. Sounded great, lots of variety, good energy in the room, visuals were awesome when I came in almost expecting a table with some turn tables and nothing else, and he's very humble and appreciate of our support, and easy to like.
Tauk last night. Sorry about the shitty camera work. It's a no smoking club, but the gels made it hazy. Also I was drunk and unsteady with it. But the sound was good through the iPhone. They remain my top up and coming band. If you don't know them just fast forward til about 20 seconds left. No Quarter cover was unreal.
Saw Black Sabbath in Houston on Thursday. Right up there with GNR Nola for show of the year for me. They were my #1 on my bucketlist and it was the second to last USA show ever....so I'm glad I made it happen.

Dillinger was fantastic. You should go see them. They seem to be using the same setlist every night for this tour. Normally not a fan of that but it's a good setlist for a "final" tour with a couple off the new album and a bunch of old favorites that they figured people would want to hear (43% Burnt, Sunshine The Werewolf, etc.) To highlight the badassery, abrakapokus happened to be there working and she was impressed. Anyone who knows her should know that is not the reaction that you would expect.

I saw them at Great Scott a few months ago (tiny venue with a 240 capacity). Was nuts; happy to see Greg sing upside down and witness the guitar player stand on top of the crowd and play while sticking his head through the ceiling plates.

Damien Jurado blew my mind last night. I was expecting him to have his five or six piece band, but it was just him with an acoustic guitar. And it was absolutely stunning. He has such a distinctive and rich voice.
I had never heard of Doug Keith, who opened for him, and he was pretty fantastic as well. I forgot how much I love the simplicity and beauty of just a one man one guitar show.
Caught Whitney last night at Thalia Hall. It was their first "homecoming" show of sorts. It's always nice to see a Chicago act get stoked up on popularity and then drop back in. I saw this with Chance after he did 10 Day, and now these guys. You can just tell there's a difference in the way they carry themselves.
I wondered how the set list would go with Light Upon The Lake being such a short album, but they provided a few covers and extended some jams (Red Moon was on point). These guys are going to be leaps and bounds above where they are right now in terms of popularity. They've got uncanny songs and they're already really well in tune with their live chemistry. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I went to Sarah Jaffe and The Suffers at The Kessler in Dallas last night. It was a two night run. The Suffers closed the first night and Sarah the last. Both were really good. I had not heard the rock edge put onto the live versions of some of Jaffe's more electro-pop album cuts before tonight. One of the funnier moments was The Suffers covers of Outkast's Spottieottiedopalicious (their horn section killed that) and Three 6 Mafia's Hard Out Here For A Pimp. This was a home town show for Sarah and lots of family and young children were in the balcony. Kam switched the lyrics to those two covers up to "Yams, yams, yams, yams" and " it's hard out here for a young entrepreneur" to accommodate. They also threw in some cumbia.

Saw Bon Iver last night at Pioneer Works.
He was really good and the whole venue/experience was really neat. It was cool to see him so excited to be there.
A lot of 22, A Million goes over well live, but my favorites he played were from his self titled. All in all great experience. Excited to see how he adapts to his headline performances.
