Helpful hints for Caravans and Driving
« Thread Started on May 31, 2006, 2:54pm »

BRING A MAP!!! :o
I'm saying this because a few years ago we got lost. Doh!

Before meeting a caravan it helps to find out what cars and or what they look like. (If you have an inforooster shirt this will help.(shamless plug))

If your in a caravan get some phone numbers of the other people to make getting gas/potty easier.

When getting into roo try to stay together. Let the booth people know how many cars are behind you. Your cars are going to be checked so when your through pull ahead and go off to the side and tell one of the parking people why your waiting.

I'm suggesting not painting your car up with Roo stuff this will make it harder for the police to stop you and try to get cute.

Don't drive stupid or speed. I slow down when I hit the Tenn border. All the police know about bonnaroo. Don't make your self a target.

Get gas before Roo. I like to stop outside of Murfreesboro fill up the tank and run into piss. Getting gas now will help going into and getting out of roo.

Got any more?

Do NOT take the very first exit on if you are coming on 24 west. The correct exit is 112, but, there is a sign about 20 miles before that. This is the exit with the big electronic sign. This takes way down the backroads and long detour.

If you're absolutely intent on bring in glass (i.e. - Liquor bottles, bottled beer) then don't be a jackass and "hide" it in your cooler. We saw so many people get busted with their liquor because they kept it in coolers.

Keep it in your duffle bag or buried because if you haven't noticed...they don't really search your car that hard.

They tore our car apart. it's simply random and the only place they didn't look to hard was the cooler. If u want to bring in bottles put them on the very bottom of your cooler with tons of nuts on top such as cans and food. ....

Last year we bought glass bottles but just filled up plastic jugs with liquour. Also they tried to tell us we had too much beer for only one car....they were going to take some away but we argued with them saying all they specified was no glass and they let us by. I think they just wanted more free beer....greedy Love Children.

Oh yea and definatly don't paint your car with Bonnaroo stuff.....thats just asking to get pulled over.

good advice here! Always fill up before hitting the line...but if you're coming from the north, DO NOT use the exit for White House, TN. I personally know three people who've been busted there, and every year after roo as we whiz by we see cops with people pulled over all up and down that road...even on the ramps!

My two friends and I got busted in White House on the way there and back. Don't exit there, don't speed there, and stay out of the left hand lane. They said they pulled us over for being in the passing lane too long. Also, Bonnaroo Radio will be your best friend once you get near Manchester!

If you're coming through Nashville and down I-24East get off at Exit 66B in Smyrna (45 miles before Roo). There's a Krogers and a Publix for food and a Home Depot and a Lowe's for anything else you forgot. Krogers also has fairly cheap gas. And I've never known the cops to bug you (as long as you do the speed limit.)

when driving distances, understnad the importance of an hour power nap. Dont watch the median lines in the road, you'll tend to get hypnotized by them and fail to take notice to other things in the road (cars, trucks, deer, potential Roadkill +1point!, even those traffic cone/barrels)

Bring apples or some type of fruit in the car with you. easy energy and its okay to throw out the cores on the side of the road...(kinda...)

Watch the larger tractor-trailor trucks, they know whats going on with the police in the area. If the speed limit is 55 and they are all doing 55, Do 55! if they're doing 75,80, go ahead and keep up.

Truckstops are wonderful! they usually have a shower setup, for five bucks you can get a 10 minute shower or so. Warm food, and all sorts of snacks you can use. Eat a Large breakfast in the morning, it'll keep you going all day long.

Don't race others, remember you have passengers, you can kill yourself on your own free time.

walkie talkies for the win

and if you have a lot of states to go through, put a specific song as the 1st track on a CD and play that song each time you cross a state line, sort've like a celebration

We always pick something ridiculus like Europe's The Final Countdown or East Bound and Down from smokey and the bandit

This is so true. I will remember to keep it off of the playlist. Because you know if it does come on, it has to be cranked up.

I was wondering if there is just ONE enterance to the campgrounds? Do all those cars line up for one big entry point and then they file in the cars one by one to line up starting from closest to Centeroo and then to the back? I would like to get as close to Centeroo as possible so I will come super early, but is there a better enterance than another?

Nope - the earlier you show up - the more likely it is that you will be in BFE - it is a total crapshoot as to where you get put - time does not matter - other then early = BFE

There are two enterences if I remember - one off the highway and one off Bushy Branch Road.

Hi all,

From other threads here, it sounds like the consensus is that the best arrival plan to get a good car/camp spot and avoid traffic backups is to arrive on Thursday morning, taking exit 112 off I-24 West, rather than the Bushy Branch exit (111 off I-24 East) which takes you to the back gate. I will be coming down I-24 East (south from Nashville)... so am I better off passing exit 111, then exiting later to get on I-24 West so I can get to exit 112? Or will traffic be too tied up before noon for me to make this maneuver? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

THP will decide if it's possible. They close exits at their discretion and direction traffic where they want. But a turn around a Exit 114 might be best.

Coming from the south, you will reach 114 before you reach 112. Just roll past 114 to 112.

Great to find this site after only 3 years of attending Bonnaroo!!! Wish I had known about it sooner.

Anywho, Myself and 3 other carloads of people are coming down from Boston, MA.

Any tips on directions once we start getting closer??? I'll post a link to the directions we have now, some years we've gotten in as quick as 20 minutes with a prime parking spot at 2 in the afternoon...the first year my buddy and I spent about 8 hours waiting in line...def. dont want that to happen again. Anyways, everyoen enjoy the Bonnaroo experience, because before you know it, it's over and off to thinking about next year. If anyone could take a peek at these directions and maybe give me some insight, that'd be awesome!
