what do yall do about really bad conflicts? (specifically late night). It looks like theres going to be some bad ones this yr. In 06 when i saw the superjam and Dr John were conflicting i was pissed. and even more so when i found out it was Trey/Mike/Duo/Phil. so that night i split it up between the two. The nice thing about late night sets is that they are long enough to see a good chunk of more than one. but if you go by that method you can miss something special.
what course of action do you take in a time of horrible conflict?
stay at one?..try to get to a couple? play it by ear?
It's always cooler to see a full set, but during those conflicts...I dunno, I split it up last year, started at the Lips and wandered past Mule before settling at Galactic for a while. Some people would choose their favorite band of the three, some would choose the band they've never seen before or know the least about. Wandering is perfectly acceptable, and some people actually run between tents for the duration of the shows.
It sort of depends on the day. I've found myself lingering for whole sets, and I've found myself running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to see everything imaginable.
Late Night has the worst conflicts for me, so unless it's a can't-miss-the-whole-set act for me, I'll usually skip around to get a feel for what else is going.

I split it up last year as best I could, and in my mind I played it perfectly.
On Friday I watched Superjam in its entirety, than ran to SCI. I got there about 5 minutes before Keller came on, I knew he was going to come on at some point and I was sooooo glad I didn't miss him.
Saturday was the real killer. Gov't Mule vs. Flips. I started with Flips in anticipation of the spaceship, which totally delivered. I caught some must-hear songs, including Yoshimi. I got to Gov't Mule in time to see Bob Weir, bounced back to Flips for a little while. Then returned to Gov't Mule during "Unring the Bell" as it evolved into a drum solo, which eventually turned into the drum solo form 'Moby Dick' . . .at which point the "oh my God! John Paul Jones" factor kicked in. I hung at Mule through the Zeppelin songs, then went over to Sasha and Digweed for like half an hour. Returned to catch the second half of Mule, including Luther Dickinson's guest spot, and a great version of "War Pigs."
This year might be a different story for me, if RR is late night I won't move from that tent.
It's all about timing, really. Sometimes they take a setbreak which allows you to go catch someone else . . . but really you have to trust that you aren't missing the show that everyone talks about for the rest of the weekend.

I usually make the difficult decision to see one band over another. Usually ends up being the "indie" act then head over to the jamband show to catch the end of it, then head from there over to whatever is still going (usually electronic). Last year my nights progressed like so:
Superjam-->DJ Shadow
Lips-->Mule-->Sasha & Digweed
You always have to figure in how long a band is playing, cause you can afford to miss some of one act if they are gonna go for 4+ hours.

Last year I stayed for the whole superjam on friday night. Saturday night I started with the Flaming Lips to the spaceship and a few songs, then headed over to Girl Talk for like 15 minutes and then settled in at Galactic. I was happy with my choices last year.
I think this year, I'll pick Sigur Ros over MMJ or Phil. But if Sigur Ros gets put up against Lupe Fiasco and Talib Kweli, I'm gonna have to go for the hip-hop. However, The Mars Volta will override any decision and I will be there for their entire set.
kanye west-which stage-thursday-about 9:30 or 10:00-will play till midnight-his opener will be chromeo who will start around 7:30-other thursday headliners-infected mushroom(if they get added), state radio, dark star orchestra-supporting acts-battles, matt costa(if he gets added), vampire weekend, mgmt, the sword, backdoor slam, grupo fantasma, felice brothers
what stage-metallica, friday-pearl jam, saturday-jack johnson, sunday-supporting acts-plant and krauss, allman brothers, chris rock, raconteurs, bb king, trucks and tedeschi, phil lesh acoustic set, robert randolph's revival
which stage-willie nelson, ben folds, death cab for cutie-supporting acts-bluegrass allstars, cat power, oar, yonder mountain, aimee mann, little feat, jakob dylan, mason jennings, ozomatli
tent headliners-cracker(if they get added), talib kweli, mastodon, ani difranco(if she gets added), gogol bordello, broken social scene, pat green, solomon burke-supporting acts-blind melon, israel vibration, against me, iron and wine, minus the bear, fiery furnaces, drive-by truckers, sharon jones, jose gonzalez, !!!, rilo kiley, donavon frankenreiter, ghostland observatory, tegan and sara, steel, train, avett brothers
Yea, it's a tough job being a late night festie, but I also split the late night last year between the Lips and Mule. Sorry I missed Lewis Black and his attempt to catch a water bottle with his head.
Last year (my first year) we decided to do partial sets. I'm not sure that it was the best idea but it was tough to commit to one band when so many great shows were happening at the same time.

I don't do partial sets. Leaving a show just seems wrong to me, you don't get the full experience of it if you don't stay for the whole thing. The only "partial sets" are ones that I've shown up to late (i.e. Explosions in the Sky this year after Robert Plant) and it still just makes the show not feel right.

If you want a god steak, you go to the steak house and have a steak dinner. The buffet allows you the option of eating partial servings of everything. You can still chose to just eat full serving's of your favorites, or even indulge in one specific section. There's no right way to eat at the buffet, just have to ask yourself what you're most hungry for.

On one hand, I would think the god steak is expensive because of where it comes from. On the other hand, god is supposedly infinite which would make the supply really high and drive down price.

2010 I made all my picks buffet style, and it worked out really really well for me. The thing about that year though, was there was a shit-ton of stuff I kinda wanted to check out, but only a few select things I was really really really excited about
If there was something in particular that I really liked and was really really enjoying, I would stay the whole set.
Alot of the time it would really bug me knowing there was something else I was missing somewhere else, and it gets tough to weigh- stay with something I'm enjoying, or leave for something else I may enjoy more? I remember one instance in particular- I left Jeff Beck to catch the end of Weezer. 1 and a half songs into weezer I knew I had made a terrible decision and I hauled ass back to Jeff Beck.
Other times where I had plans to do half sets, I would get really into it and stay for the whole time. I had planned to leave Deadmau5 halfway through to catch some of Gwar, but I got so entranced in his set I couldn't bring myself to do it
