Saw these guys last night (on Halloween) and it was one of the most fun shows I've ever been to. They we just incredibly tight and their drummer, John Stanier, is out of his quackin mind. They're also Bonnaroo alumn from before my time, if I'm not mistaken. Do the right thing, and choose Battles 2012.

totally want these guys back. i feel like they got screwed over in 2008 with a short set due to difficulties with their sound check. that said, Atlas is epic live. still haven't heard the new album.

Am I the only biased person here who wishes they still had their lead singer? Take Atlas for instance, now when they play Atlas live, they use a vocals track for Tyondai's part where previously they had him using all sorts of voice modulation to get the distorted effects. I consider it a huge loss for the band to lose him since he was capable of playing the keyboard and the guitar at the same time. Makes me wonder what all they are playing and what all is a loop. I still saw them last month, but I was more blown away by Nissenenmondai than Battles. They are still good, just not as good as they were IMO.
I never saw them with Tyondai, so I can't compare the two live. I will say, though, that their one record with Tyondai, Mirrored, was exponentially better than their one record without him, Gloss Drop (which is actually still a pretty good record).
That said, as NoD mentioned, the thing that always made Battles stand out was the sheer muscle of their instrumentation. Hard to imagine they've lost much of that live without Tyondai. All in all, I think the loss of Braxton probably hurt them live, but not enough to where they aren't still amazing live (on record is where that loss might hit the hardest).
I think losing Tyondai was a huge blow but they handled it exceptionally. Atlas live with him was cool as shit but it's still great without him. For how much they had to adapt as a 3 piece trying to still get that huge complex sound, they've done exceptionally, and it's only gonna get better now that they are touring and getting more confident without him. I think they are better off in the long run. I think Mirrored was better than Gloss Drop but I have a feeling their third album will be their masterpiece.
