Bassnectar is one of three repeats this year. (Black Keys and Mumford and Suns).
something they all have in common is that they all have exploded in popularity over the past year. as have Phoenix and MGMT (former repeats)
i think he'll play a tent again ...close it this time instead of opening. but i wouldnt be surprised if he opened a show on the which stage (SCI). to me it doesnt really make much sense to bring back an act the very next year if you are going to give him the same slot as the year before.
FWIW i'm not a fan and probably won't see his set.
LOL @ you getting butthurt over that joke. I'll most likely be there for Bassnectar's show, but it's ok to have a sense of humor about things. Trust me, it's ok to laugh. Try it sometime.

omg does anyone know what song that is... sounds so quacking sick
edit: found it but can only find live versions >.<
yeah, I was at this show and can't find anything but live versions of any of his new stuff... all of his new stuff was amazing. Cant wait to see him again at the farm.

i saw him once open up for sts9, and another time at all good. i'll catch his set if there's nothing else going on, but i imagine there probably will be something else going on.
i hope he gets a stage show just so it will be massive
but a tent is fine too
I figured he'd actually get the equivalent of the Deadmau5 slot from last year, so Sat night (early Sun morning really) instead of Fri. Seems to me the infrasound freq's would be sooooo much better in a tent (which I always thought of as key to the experience).

How popular is Bassnectar in the States these days? Sorry for the ignorance, I'm an international bonnaroo-er. The reason I ask is because I'd be surprised if they went from a few big internationally known DJs for their premier spot and then went more "local". I only say local because we don't hear much of him down here in South America, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything for a festival in Tennessee. Even Deadmau5 is pretty big down here, so I'm more expecting an addition of a Guetta, Fatboy Slim (playing in Santiago for Lolla), or Paul Van Dyk for the Deadmau5 spot.
^^^ I don't have any stats I can throw out, but it seems like he's pretty well known here (??)
Still, good point. For the spot in years past we've had:
2010 - Deadmau5 2009 - NIN (closest I can attribute to electronic that year...I don't remember there being any other electronic type music; we stopped by MGMT and then the XBOX area till the sun came up that year) 2008 - Chromeo 2007 - Sasha & John Digweed 2006 - Sasha I'll leave it up to others to go back further....
I'm not sure Bassnectar can match those stats comparitvely

he is a (mostly) very polarizing figure in the electronic music/dj community. most people either hate him or love him, in my experience talking to people. ive been hard-pressed to find a casual fan or even someone who is indifferent in their opinion on him.
but one thing is for sure, is that of his rising popularity and the ability to perform at bigger venues (he sold out basscenter in asheville civic center) & headlining festivals (snowball, summercamp, electric forest).

For the record, I'm a casual fan... I like what he's doing, it's fun in a live environment, but it's not something I can listen to in my car or at home on a regular basis.

2009 had Oakenfold and Pretty Lights (+ girl talk but I dont consider him electro) I wouldn't say Bassnectar is quite as big as Tiesto, Oakenfold, or Sasha &Digweed but he's becoming a pretty big name... in 2009 I saw him play in a small bar, and over the past 2 years he's blown up to the point of selling out small theatres and headlining small festivals.

While true, that was Friday night. I personally save up for Sat night for my electronic ;-) Else I'll take a nap from Sat afternoon until Sun night
I'm with ya on the casual part. I have Underground Communication, but I only put it on every now and then.
To me, that entire genre is better experienced first hand. When I listen to the CD, I feel like I'm trying to relive the experience, but it always feels so second rate. It's kind of like the highschool football star that's still trying get someone to go for the hail mary at age 45.

None of those djs listed are even remotely close to electro.
Yeah... I don't get it.. I use electro as a blanket term for all electronic music, including but not limited to techno, house, trance, dnb, dubstep, jamtronica, etc etc
None of those djs listed are even remotely close to electro.
Not even remotely close? You'd think Oakenfold would have wipped out an acoustic guitar and played us folk songs in 09.
No oakenfold plays trance a GENRE of electronic music just like electro is a genre of electronic music.
And laggy I knew what you meant I was just busting your balls its one of my pet peeves when people use a blanket term to cover electronic music because all of it is so different. its like using rock to cover anything that involves a guitar.

Same here. I got free tickets to one of his shows and my roommate is a big fan so I took him and I had a lot of fun, but I don't have a Bassnectar pandora station or any of his CDs or anything.
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.

I guess I always though 'electro' was short for 'electronic music'.
I can relate though. It grinds my gears when people refer to all electronic music as 'techno'

I agree with you Laggy on the techno word. There's something about it that always has a hint of derision in it when people say it. Techno.
That all said, I've always found electronica/dance music really hard to characterize with labels. I rarely know what to call it. Despite how we may cut it all up, it's all about the same thing. To paraphrase Michael Travis from SCI/EOTO when talking about electronica music, electronica is an uninhibited expression of joy and emotion that can take you to all sorts of places, like the improv of jazz or jam music. What I'm saying is that all electronica/dance music has a lot more in common than it does apart.
We are hoping to check out at least one electronic show but can't decide which will be more fun--Pretty Lights or Bassnectar. Any suggestions? I plan on seeing STS9 as well but they are somewhere between Jam and electronic for me.
