I'm sick of thinking, as will be obvious by my next completely random question - does this have anything to do with ZE Records?
I was going to ask if it had anything to do with FFRR records (Cookie Crew used 25 miles in a song that won a BRIT award). FFRR is Orbital's record company. Orbital is playing Coachella this year.
Just to ease the old mind, I look back to post #111 (one, one, ONE)...
ed is short for what edward - ward = mward.but he said its not this simple. so its something related to m ward? ward is half of she and him? still seems to obvious.
black star sounds like a good guess but is that too obvious. i think they will be there
but nothing seems to be one letter off. I am totally stumped =(
I'm sue this has already been said. But I'm to tired to re-read and to tired for research. But doesn't MMJ have an album called Z. If I'm wrong don't shoot me
This repeating thing keeps coming up, starting with the clue's "is what is" when it should just say "is" The first thing I thought of reading that was Was Not Was, but other than being on ZE Records I couldn't find a way to connect them any more to the clue, and even though Was is one letter from War, I still can't. But somehow this repeating thing must mean something.
i will say one one person at least was ONE letter away from the correct answer.
said word needs one more letter
then you are done
we all go get beer and watch Lost
Well, nobody said "word" as a guess, but if you add an S you get The Sword, and when you SAY Ward (which has been guessed) with an S in front, it can come out sounding the same, although the w technically should be silent. Drummer's name is Wingo, as in "win as you go" from above. What this could have to do with the clue itself I don't know.
Edit: Edwina (Edwin + a, making her a wina) is a member of Hummingbird, a project "currently on hold due to the pregnancy of other band *members*." And, she sang with Roger McGuinn. Hatched?

I'm ready to call it a night but I did find something somewhat interesting. Here is a link to the few songs which have hit #1 by two different artists. One of them "You Keep Me Hanging" the Kim Wilde version, preceded Atlantic Starr by a week. When you go to the previous hit version done by the supremes and then jump ahead 2 weeks you find the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" at #1. I doubt anyone said anything resembling "Beach Boys" though to be off by 1 letter so I wouldn't get my hopes up about it. Still just thought I'd share the findings.
One more final thought...the Carpenters had two #1 hits on the hot 100. There was their song (They Long To Be) Close To You in 1970 & their version of "Please Mr Postman" in 1975. The Marvellettes also took "Please Mr Postman" to number 1 in 1961. The song which succeeded this version 2 times later was "The Twist" by Chubby Checker. This may be why djjd was talking about his Czech beer but more likely is just a big coincidence since again the odds of anyone having said anything 1 letter off from chubby checker is pretty much rediculous. Well, off to bed at last.
lol the only thing I can come up with by adding a letter to one of our guesses is Gwar ;D
Oh no, I am mortified to realize this actually works with the clue. What hatched the Starr - War. What is two times before "I" was - the letter G. So put what is two times beore I (G) before what hatched the Starr (War) and you actually have a plausible explanation for this. UGH.
The only problem is he was never leading us down a path that would get to that answer until the add-a-letter thing, and was in fact pointing away from that kind of logic, which seems strange. This hint, "edwin is a winner- you know, or will help you win as you go, think think" in particular makes no sense, unless he's talking about Aretha Franklin, who won the grammy for best R&B vocal the year after Edwin won it, plus there's the whole Think (think think) thing. The emphasis on ONE - Soul Sister #1. A is letter #1, and though noone guessed Retha, someone did mention Franklin, and it really only takes the one letter A in front of that to know it would mean Aretha. Plus she has a song Brand New Me.
I hate this clue's guts. especially if the answer is Gwar.

I was thinking of Aretha due to his comment "think, think" reminding me of her song "think" as king also mentions above. Also Think never peaked on the hot 100 chart...only the R&B one. She did have two other songs that did take the number one spot but checked around those and didn't seem to offer any connection. (Though the later one was at the top two weeks before u2 and one & one make two

Notdarkyet, I think the connection is in the grammy awards, hence DJJD's emphasis on Edwin winning. Aretha won the same category of grammy the year after Starr did, aka 2 times before Starr did.
