One of my favorite bands on the bottom quarter of the lineup this year. I'm guessing they will probably be a Thursday band. I saw that some people were not crazy about them, so I wanted to make a thread that had my favorite tracks and maybe convert a few people.
Milkman - probably the fastest track on the album
Marked - Slow build up to a really gorgeous ending
California - spoken poetry with a great ambient backing track
EMA is definitely on my 'must see' list. I can understand the criticisms that people have, however, I would urge anybody interested in her/their sound to listen/look past "California". While I like that song, there are MUCH better songs on Past Life Martyred Saints.
EDIT: Congrats on 2500 Phi!!!!

I'm skipping her show tomorrow, because i can't really afford the bus ticket to Minneapolis. I hope she plays on Thursday against no one i care about, so i can make up for skipping the show.

First heard her cover of Endless Nameless on SPIN's Newermind. After hearing that someone chose to cover it, I knew I had to check that person out. I think I may see her in DC, because it doesn't seem like one of those shows I have to see the Roo version of.
(1) Damon Albarn (2) Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (3) King Khan & His Shrines (4) Ty Segall (5) Ms Lauryn Hill (6) Darkside (7) Kanye (8) Janelle Monae (9) Goat (10) Meshuggah.
and im actually diggin "Milkman". still hate "California" with a passion lol.
Milkman was the track that got me into EAP. California grew on me in a really big way.
NoAge: do you realize I wouldn't have given EMA a listen if it hadn't been for your enthusiastic recommendation? When YOU like a band, I pay attention & put them in rotation. (Same for Zapp & GL!) Y'all have such good taste that it's hard to go wrong w/your suggestions.
That said...
1. California sucks! (it must be a grower...'cause it shonuff ain't a grabber!)
2. Milkman blatantly rips the drum sequence from former ABBA singer Frida's 1982 song "I Know There's Something Goin' On" - so yeah, it's cool that EMA lifts from music that is older than she is!
Saw her last night in Minneapolis. I'm trying to catch a good amount of shows in the next few months to eliminate conflicts during festival season, but damn, she was so quacking good I am going to have to see her again at Roo. Show was surprisingly intense and I just had a good feeling through all of it. She played for about an hour and ten minutes in case anyone was wondering if she can hold a whole slot.
She's a really good performer, sounds awesome live, and does all the little things to make the audience feel engaged. She wasn't a corpse up on stage, had a bit of banter, and passed around a bottle of Jack Daniels for the audience during the encore. These teen girls by me rushed up to get a hold of it, but then were too chicken to take a sip. Oh and her drunk mom was there and EMA basically told her not to quack any young guys in the audience.
Fear, I feel bad for you, dude. I walked to the venue from my apartment. Plus Julianna Barwick did a free performance earlier in the night at an art museum beneath this: www.flickr.com/photos/walkerart/6649130199/
It was awesome.
Go see EMA on her tour if you possibly can. She's awesome, has a cool violinist, and is street kid sexy. Her guitarist is cute too. Go to her show!
If you like EMA you should check out Grails. She was/is in that band. It's more along the lines of creating atmosphere than actual songs you can rock out to though.
hopefully I'll be off work around 2pm so I can get to the farm by 3pm so I can get to EMA by 4pm. That's a lot of hustling for just living under 30 minutes away. but, shit, it's worth it. I've wanted to see her so fuckin' badly, ever since her album came out last year. "The Grey Ship" is probably my favorite, besides the obvious "California". and "Butterfly Knife".
I've been tweaking who I think I'm going to see, and honestly I'll be doing almost the entirety of my Thursday at the other tent. EMA -> Phantogram. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed EMA. I wouldn't say I'm pumped up for her, but I'm really very curious as to how her album translates from headphones to live.

I saw her a few months back and she/they put on a great show. The album really translates well live.
