Trying to buy a house. I’m following up on some things on the inspection report, and I’ve been here for four hours. It feels like I’ve been here four days. I’m on my fourth contractor of the day. The rest have all been very decent, but I can tell this one is going to give me a hard sell on how this place is going to fall apart if we don’t spend eight million dollars fixing shit. If he does, I have the name and number of a guy to get a second opinion from. Fifth contractor is coming any minute. I don’t want to talk to any more people.

Sounds miserable. Sorry boo.
Thank you! It is! And I forgot to bring a snack so I’m also super hungry.

Why do I feel like this is the millionth house you've bought since I have known you?
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Haha, this will be the fourth house we’ve owned since 2000. We’ve also lived in five rentals in that time.
So the fourth contractor quoted me three levels of work, the lowest one costing $18K, and I don’t know what to do with that.

So today at work we went on a moulding hunt. They drew up plans and they picked out moulding without even seeing what was available on the market. Right now, building materials are astronomical. I had to scramble all day trying to find comparable moulding and trim (most crown moulding has been back ordered since October). It was a nightmare. I don't know what exactly y'all are doing, but right now I highly recommend not doing it if possible. I mean tongue and groove plywood is $70 a fucking sheet. MDF is even insane, it's like $20 for 4x8 1/4" sheets.
Again I am very sorry that you are having to deal with all that, I hope it gets better.

There are some movement cracks in the driveway and garage foundation. The house itself is almost 70 years old and has some cracks as well. The guy yesterday quoted me for digging out and installing metal support beams under it to push the foundation up and hold it in place (I’m probably not describing that precisely correctly, but it’s the gist). The $18k was just doing that on the garage, but he also recommended it for the side of the house, and then he recommended a bunch of stuff to remove water from the crawl space including two sump pumps. If we did everything he recommended, the estimate was $54,000. I was warned by one of the other contractors beforehand that this guy was going to make a hard sell (although he also said the roofing guy would try to sell me a new roof and he didn’t), and I 100% do not believe that all of the things he recommended were totally necessary, and the way he presented it all to me felt very shady and pissed me off.
Anyway, we had a different guy come out today. Didn’t tell him about the guy from yesterday, just let him do his thing. He said the thing about the garage and driveway cracks is that they may have just been settlement cracks, and maybe the garage is settled now and we won’t ever have an issue with it, but it’s also on a little hill and maybe it’s still moving. He said what he would do is fill the cracks and wait and see if new gaps appear. If there’s a gap there after like a year or so, he described the same thing the guy from yesterday did, except maybe more of them so maybe more like $25K (although he also said they may not need to do all of them). So basically, he said we just have to decide if getting the house is worth taking a $25K gamble. On the house itself, he has suggestions for what needs to be done, but they weren’t going to be as expensive as the garage issue could potentially be. They are more pressing though because the crawlspace is getting a significant amount of water in it basically every time it rains and it rains here fucking constantly sometimes.

It is called shoring here. Shoring your house is very expensive. My ex's house had half done and not the other half and we were quoted $20k in 2010, I am sure the price of that is way higher now. We ended up getting a structural engineer out to see if it was still shifting or what and it was at a rapid pace. My opinion on a house that may need leveling/shoring is to move on to the next, unfortunately. It is expensive, ends up usually costing even more than your quote due to damage from actually shoring it. You might get sheetrock cracks in the walls and ceiling in order to level the house, which will all need to be repaired also. Plus, depending on the technique sometimes it isn't a permanent fix.
The whole situation sounds miserable and I really am sorry you are dealing with, especially if you really like the house. Sucky all around.

Well, we tried to get him to give us a significant reduction to make us feel more comfortable with buying that house, but he had three backup offers, so he wasn’t willing to come down to what we would have needed him to. This housing market is for sure frustrating, but at least we still have time and now we can move on.

That sucks. I am sorry, hopefully this just means it wasn't the house for you and your perfect home is still out there waiting for you. <3

Thank you! It’s such a bummer because we did really like this house a lot. This was the fourth house we made an offer on and the third we’d been under contract with. The first one, we didn’t love the house but it had an amazing yard and was in a great location, but we couldn’t reach an agreement with the seller on repairs (and I found out from our inspector that he apparently went in and did something weird under the house after we had our inspection, so I feel like we dodged a bullet there). The second one, we didn’t love, but it was a decent price and was a good space, and it had a really nice basement area that would have been perfect for working out. We terminated that one as soon as we read the inspection report because it was a flip and he had clearly just made surface changes without doing important things because there was 6-12 inches of standing water in the crawlspace and the furnace didn’t work at all (even though the listing said there was an entirely new HVAC). The third one, we viewed it like two hours before the seller was sitting down with their realtor to go over their multiple offers, so we were only able to do a verbal offer and of course it didn’t get accepted. So this was number four, and it was such a cool house, but yeah, foundation issues are scary and now that it is officially over, I can see it more objectively and know that terminating was the right thing to do, but damn, this shit is exhausting!

The first house I ever put an offer on I fell so head over heels in love with and we had been house hunting for YEARS at that point. We got accepted and then right before closing the sellers lost the house they were buying and the whole thing fell apart. I was devastated. It was like a gut punch. I know how hard it is to get over that feeling. I do believe that you did the right thing, foundation issues are the worst and the hardest/most expensive thing to fix on a house. It is even more gut wrenching when you have been searching for awhile and lost a few houses already.
I really think that y'all are going to find something you love, it just might take a little more time. Big hugs.

Soooo, instead of signing our termination notice, the seller came back with yet another counter and we’ve decided to take it. We really like the house, and after thinking it over (and over and over and over and over), we’ve decided we’re okay with the risk, especially since we have some time to prepare for it. Fingers crossed!

Congrats! I hope everything works out for y'all. New houses are super exciting.
Most advertising annoys me. I've hated crass commercialism since my early teens. This went for music, movies, television, whatever. I'll let a product sell itself to me, I don't need the help or innuendos. We were taught 12th grade theology/religion class by a former nun who had gone lay. She hated everything about using sexuality or human nature in advertising (she wasn't a prude either). This was right at the beginning of the MTV era which nosedived everything further. But at least we had the background to know that there were corporations preying on our humanity for profit. In today's world, that spills over to "Influencers" and article titles. Like seriously, I realize that some of those people have elevated importance with the younger e-public, but I don't think anyone or anything ought to be able to influence anyone for their own financial gain without some type of label or caveat stating that while it's maybe not a conflict of interest in the traditional sense, they are getting something for peddling this, that or the other. At that point, I really don't care because the information is there.
When it comes to articles and grab you shit on the internet, there is so much wrong with that shit. I've already ranted enough about the word "this" to entice one to click on the article to see what this is. And I've bitched about "Sign up to receive our emails so you can "Be the first to know!" That's clearly bullshit as everyone who happens to be reading their emails will know at the same time when a blast goes out.
Here are some recent annoyances that make me want to break shit:
1) NFL World reacts to news about _________. Like I don't care about that shit. Tell me what the news is and maybe I'll read it.
2) Not every fucking image in existence can be "STUNNING!" Not everything that happens will leave you STUNNED. Fuck you. I'd like to stun the motherfucker who typed that out there. But I'm guessing that entices idiots that just can't help themselves to a peek and likely a let down.
3) So and so or such and such broke the internet. No they didn't. Only shit like 9/11 breaks the internet or controlled corporate/government blockers. Sometimes I laugh when ad advertisement says, "See why this game is going viral with seniors/gamers/women/workers/whatever. How tf you going to get me to click something because you're clearly an ad and just because you're hoping that people buy your stupid game that I'm going to check it out because you're telling me it is going or went viral? Fuck those assholes.
4) Terrible food that never tasted so good. This one grates me worse than probably the rest of them. YouTube is always pushing stupid content. I usually browse signed out because I don't want shit spilling over into my actual account. But it remembers your searches when signed out. Not once I have ever asked for Dr. Michael Campbell's advise on COVID. I don't even search for COVID related shit. Why are you pushing this shitty content on me? But it gets much worse than even that. Simply because I will look up recipes from time to time, I'll get YouTube pushing stupid shit like, "Never have I tasted something this good", and it's got millions of views. Or they say, "Now my husband/wife wants me to cook this 3x a week." Or "Now we make this several times a day." No you don't. Your translator is fucked or something. You can clearly see on the fucking preview it's a piece of oven baked chicken or a pancake. But people are fucking idiots.
There was this one the other day that was literally a new low, and I'm not fucking kidding. It was literally a pan with the crust of white bread with chopped vienna sausages or hot dogs and someone pouring an egg in it. I'm scared to search for it because it is liable to pollute my searches for the next decade. It's fine content if someone was teaching a 4th or 5th grade cooking class and wanted to try to make that. But how can you not get enough of it? Who the fuck are you?
Haha. Shitty advertising is satan to me. And right on cue I was just watching some slot jackpots, kayak fishing and the winter sports failarmy that came out today only to see “Never before have I eaten such delicious eggs” with millions of views was staring me in the face. It was a skillet with some tomato slices in it. Fucking shit. There is no escape from hell.
I would have gone with Clint Eastwood’s “get off my lawn”.
Haha. But that’s not me because I also hate some fucking NIMBYs. But definitely get out of my Internet with that bullshit. Lo Fi and 10 hours of chill beats to relax to as well. I didn’t ask for that. I don’t want it. I can only dislike so many similar things before being annoyed those dumb ass algorithms don’t listen. Maybe they just don’t give a fuck.
