O.K. so I just stumbled upon something strange on the web, and being that all my friends are out and i have no one to tell this to, im coming here to post it to you all!!
I'm a 5th grade teacher and right now its been decided that the the "social studies" curriculum im teaching my students (i prefer to classify it as science.. but WEV) is global warming/climate change/its effects/and what we can do.
so im doing a google search and i stumble upon a thread of parents who are APPALLED that their children have been shown "An inconvenient truth" in the classroom. My fellow fifth grade teachers are showing the movie to their students and i pretty much have to also (although i highly believe the entire movie is going to go over their heads... but ANYWAY )
i wouldnt worry about it. when the original thing went down we had a thread about it. the parent that was mad was named frosty, he stated that the earth was only 14,000 years old, that global warming was predicted in the bible and is just part of the apocalypse, and that condoms didnt belong in school and neither does al gore because he wasnt a teacher. which is funny because al gore is a university professor ;D so unless you live in bible country id just show the science of it. which al gores movie does an excellent job of showing. its science. its shown in classrooms around the world. and even if it caused some problems at least youd know you did your best to actually educate you students. parents like frosty should send their kids to bible school if they want them to learn about fantasy, quit holding back the teaching of reality and facts to my kid. but im rambling. its a habit. but i say show it and skip the other one. unless you think its factual. i only watched the first couple minutes so i cant say. i wouldnt use it as an educational tool from what i saw of it. it seemed completley political. which gores movies is not in any way. contrary to what many think. i will try to find the link to the post that discussed the whole thing.

saying the bible is fantasy is a very ignorant comment!!!....If u believe AL gore (the creator of the internet) regarding global warming then u live in a fantasy world. If u seen the movie it is all based in theory and the "science" they do show is very cloudy b/c even though some scientist aggree many don't.
haha Al gore isn't politcal what a joke DUDE he ran for president it doesn't get anymore political than al gore. However there should be no problem showing this movie to kids if u want to scare them that the world is going to hell if u don't by an electric car. (pure fantasy). The movie is very political b/c it shows energy companies as "evil" and wanting to destroy the planet which is PURE fantasy. If u want to spark debate then it's good but to show Gores movie as fact is laughable at best.

It is a million times more factual then the bible. If the bible werent fantasy then they wouldnt teach it as so at colleges. I'm not trying to bible bash, but come on, how can someone who looks at it unbiased say its not fantasy.

George Bush has caused global warming. He has a huge magnifying glass and is heating up the earth. Bush also can create hurricanes and causes war's all by himself. we should watch out maybe he is the evil god
If I was new to this board I would wonder why so many on this board have a HATE for christians (religion)......I thought Bonnarro and the "scence" was suppose to be about getting together and trying to understand each others point of view but seriously tons of threads just bash christians left and right. where's the love folks. ????

fantasy it's not taught as fantasy ...u never been to college if u think it's taught like a lord of the rings novel sorry ziggy but the only fantasy is the world is going to burn up if we don't buy an electric car that is fantasy and should be taught as such

As i said, I'm not bashing religion, but theres no way the bible can truely be anything other then fantasy. You can say YOU believe its real, but a reasonable person would be able to look at it without bias and see thats theres absolutly nothing proving that. Fantasy = Fiction, not neccesarily LOTR.

I am a resonable person and so are millions of people in the world. they look and don't see lord of the rings. Don't worry it's cool the egyptians believed in an after life and many billions have since ....if u somehow know more than billions that came before u then I bow my hat and ask u to prove it;s fantasy

^hey guys, didn't we already do this in the "Jesus" thread? No good will come of it. Agree to disagree and leave it alone. I feel very strongly about religion but, this really isn't the place. It does absolutely no good at all. I'm not trying to tell anyone how to behave. I'm just stating the obvious. IMHO.
Karma (for both of you) for being so determined in your outlooks/beliefs/whatever. (I don't have any to give right now but, I'll take care of you both as soon as possible)

yeah u are right oatmeal we all have different views. which is cool but we need to respect others views and not call a religious book fantasy..it's just a respect thing ......I promise I won't say anything bad about the periodic table of elements

I was just comming in here to post that. Theres never really a point to argue about religion, because no ones gonna change their minds. I also think fantasy was the wrong word, i mean fiction, which i think could be less disrespectful. But i definatly agree to disagree.

to get on topic of global warming. So what if the U.S. takes steps to overcome global warming. We can start but if INDIA, china, and others aren't on board how could it work. Just b/c we stop polluting how could we truly stop other countries. this wa s avalid concern I found from the movie

Americans produce over 45% of the green house gasses released in the world. Signifcantly more than any other country. Thats almost half of the world. If we can get half of the world to help, thats a BIG start. And think about the snowball effect that would occur. Soon you could have lots of that cut down...but it does need to be done regardless of what other nations want to do. We can't sit back and say "We'll do something, but only if everyone else does it first.:

weird. ok. just burning off some steam. dont worry - my steam is void of CO2 or any other greenhouse gases.
I agree that showing the whole movie at once would seriously endanger the attention span of the average 5th grader not to mention all the ADDers, would it be possible to do a bit over several days and have a little time after to 'discuss"?
I thought the film was excellent and fairly shows the trouble we have gotten ourselves into in the past 50 or so years.
The children are our future and the more they can be exposed to ways to make our planet a better place to live, the more will get done in future years and hopefully the more we will evolve as humans.

well not to continue anything. but i didnt say the bible was fantasy (although i beleive it is) i said that saying the earth is 14000 years old and global warming is caused by the bible is fantasy. and i didnt say al gores not political i said his movie wasn t and it isnt. nothing you say makes any sense at all so im just not gonna talk to you about it. ya man...al gore invented the internet. i think you should quit using it in protest!

Sadly, as evidenced by this thread, I'd say you'll be dealing with some pissed-off parents no matter what you do.
I for one have not seen the movie **gasp** but as a parent of a 13 yo and a 9 yo - they need to understand what we are doing to our climate and how it affects us all. I would not have a problem with it. Now condoms being handed out in school would be another thing (if I had not already educated my children about that aspect of life)
P.S. ^^^^and I am a Christian with a lot of faith in the Bible - but I also believe in evolution and the Big Bang - just because you have faith in a religion does not mean that you have blinders on and take everything the Bible says word for word

thanks!! i will be honest here.. its pretty damn hard, and i cant wait for june.. cause my first year is breaking me hard!
but look at this thread go! I personally dont think showing the movie is going to be any more beneficial than the science lessons ive been teaching them about greenhouse gases, emissions, and the effects. I just think my fellow teachers who decided on the movie thing mustve gotten really excited when they first saw the movie. As if they have never heard of all of this before. Not to sound cocky, but i honestly think having me teach them the basics of how the weather cycle and carbon cycle works would be a more beneficial experience than watching I.T. and gore for hours.
BUt i did enjoy the movie. My students who have LD's and ED's are less apt to enjoy it. Except for maybe the part when they show you about the polar bears dying. I guess we will see if i show it this week!
Lastly... as for the U.S. taking a stand, and us waiting until other countries do something about it... well check out the Kyoto Treaty.. and consider why it is void of our signature.
I just cannot understand how parents would be apalled. Just because the movie is by Al Gore?! In the big picture global warming is AN ISSUE and it has nothing to do with Al Gore but EVERYBODY. If you feel uncomfortable with your child seeing this then you doing nothing but sheltering them out to believe that this is a perfect world and there is nothing to worry about because they have a president who loves Jesus.
Chicagorooer.....of course we cannot force other countries to take a stand but as of right now we are pretty much doing less than everybody and we cause the most damage?!! Let's start out with the small steps....I'd like to think we are as great of a nation as we boast so maybe if we took some SERIOUS action to stop this other nations would follow.

More and more India, china are growing and many other countries are also growing their industry. So in the near future these countries will over take or come close to the amount of greenhouse gases we release today.
Remember we can't force other countries to come on board. Why would the middle east want to get rid of using oil?? They will never support other technologies. Why would a growing nation such as India want to spend billions on alternative fuels when they can grow their nations using coal or other cheap fuel sources??
So in order to reduce greenhouse gases the entire world has to get on board or it will be doomed for failure. Hell we can't even get the world to aggree training your kids to become sucide bombers is wrong how the hell we gonna get the world to use friendly energy sources.....

huh. i could have sworn that iran wants to use alternative energy sources. but we are going to bomb them if they do. have you seent the way middle eastern people live? they are poor, diseased, hungry, and live in fear of death everyday at the hands of these horrible regimes that run their countries because we keep them in power so rich bastards over here can get richer off of oil. the best thing that could ever happen for the middle eastern people is for oil to be used less. then we wont have an intrest in "making them free' (ya right) and with out our support these horrible regimes will go broke and be overthrow like they would have decades ago were it not for our intervention in the name of profits. and then they can blame themselves for theior problems instead of it being our fault. which it is now.
not-sees are no better then nazis. and i dont understand how so many people can not-see the reality of our world.
