No one here is going solely for the headliners. But to the general public, the headliners do matter.
Dude, I live in Tennessee and there is a good percentage of the general public IN THIS STATE who don't even know what Bonnaroo is. The reason I know this is b/c I have Bonnaroo pics plastered all over a 12 foot wall at the desk at my office. Every day I have someone coming in, looking at the pictures, and asking what it is (the name is out there on the pics in several places). As the years have worn on, I have noticed a few more people do know what it is, however, the majority of people are completely lost to the idea that the biggest festival in the US is happening in this state. It's amazing to me really, but that's the way it is.
So what I'm saying is, the general public should not be who Bonnaroo is marketing to. The general public doesn't care if its Prince or Metallica or Radiohead or Jack Johnson, because they aren't going no matter what.
Bonnaroo has built a fanbase to market to, and that fanbase should not be looking to the headliners first. I understand wanting good headliners. If I had my way, Phish would headline 2 nights and Radiohead would headline 2 nights. But that ain't happening, and I can accept that, b/c Roo is not shaped around what I want. It's shaped around a culturally diverse group of individuals who have found a common thread in the enjoyment of live music. The majority of the people who go to Bonnaroo will likely go no matter who the headliners are. What will ultimately turn them away will be an overall lack of bands that are relevant to them, whatever genre they are from. As long as Bonnaroo sells the bands it needs to sell to its dedicated fanbase, they could book weak headliners and still draw a huge crowd.
They know this. I think they felt like these headliners were strong, especially nabbing a one-off from Metallica, but they overestimated and got beat on that front by some other festivals. It shouldn't really matter though. With Phil Lesh and My Morning Jacket going all night on a big stage, those are alot like Headliners at other festivals, they just aren't billed as such at ROO. Rest assured, there will be plenty of music offered to the live music lover who wishes to explore his or her musical boundaries, whether it be in the headliners or not.

I like how Jack is headlining the final day of Bonnaroo, but headlining the opening day of Coachella. I have no problems with Jack, but it seems like a lot of other people do. I agree that lots of people will go see Jack because he is widely popular, but I am still pulling for a Phish reunion. If Coachella announced Prince 2 weeks prior to it starting, Roo should be able to get Phish. And who knows, since Jack is so popular, maybe he can pull up incredible special guests onstage with him.
2/5- Papadosio 3/3- MUSE 3/12- John Mayer 3/19- The Werks 3/31- Passion Pit 4/18- Ben Folds 4/20- Against Me! 6/10- Bonnaroo 6/30- Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey
jack johnson would be the worst attended sunday night headliner to date. the sunday night exodus will be unprecedented if it really is him.
False. He will likely be the most attended Sunday headliner to date as he is much more widely popular than Widespread Panic or Phil Lesh & Friends.
panic and phil fans are far more likely to piss off their monday by staying late into the night sunday. it has always made great sense to close with the most touring-centric group, because their fanbases tend to be more hardcore, and stick around while everyone with monday morning jobs roles out early. staying for the last headliner requires committing your monday (in most cases), or at the very least, being totally strung out for whatever you have to do. i dont think jack will cause nearly as many ppl to make that choice.

Uh, hello and welcome to February. This is pretty much old news. I can't believe so many people are still up in arms about this.
I am excited about Jack Johnson. I like his music and plan on seeing him...which will be a first for me, staying to see the Sunday night headliner at Roo. I didn't stay for Phil Lesh or Widespread. So I am actually excited.
Lolla and Coachella have very top-heavy lineups (although, I will admit...Coachella's electronica lineup is disgustingly good) and Bonnaroo is very balanced. I've never gone to Roo for the headliners anyway.

Most people leave early because they don't like WSP and don't know who Phil Lesh is.
They know who Jack Johnson is. So they'll stick around.

I am totally cool with Jack Johnson. I like him a lot in fact. I was at his show in '05 and I will certainly be at his show this year. That being said, he does strike me as an odd choice for a headliner. In '05 he was a Which Stage act in the middle of the day. Since then he has only released one album (two if you count the Curious George soundtrack), which, to my understanding, has been no more successful than his previous works. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he is at the festival. However, it seems to me that even a 2.5 hour set would be a stretch for him. Traditionally, Sunday headliners have played for 3-4 hours (however, as I have speculated, they might have chosen JJ as the Sunday headliner specifically to accommodate Kanye glowing in the dark). The only logic is: a) It's a conspiracy, and JJ is not really closing out the festival. b) They are letting JJ headline a night because every other festival in the US is.
I assume the answer is b, but I would love for it to be a.
All of this aside, I think it will be a great show. I'm sure he will pull out a lot of guests and the general vibe amongst the crowd will be as chill as it gets.
Well - I am excited about Jack Johnson on Sunday - I will stay in Centeroo on Sunday night instead of heading back to camp
My first year - WSP closed - I think I watched a little of the show and then went to camp - not a big WSP fan
Last year - Phil Lesh - or I may have it mixed up and WSP played last year and Phil the year before - either way - not a fan of either one - and it just gave me an excuse to head to camp early - get a good night of sleep before breaking Camp on Monday morning and heading home.
This year - with Jack playing - I'll be there until he leaves the stage.
Sooo - as I said when someone said about Metallica being the least attended show in another thread - YAYAYAYAY - if everyone who hates the fact that Jack is closing out Bonnaroo stays waya - good - means more room for me and more of an opportunity for me to get close - same goes for Metallica - the fewer people at the show - more room for me.

I'm surprised that people are still so surprised that JJ is a headliner. I just looked him up on Billboard and its pretty obvious that his popularity is just starting to peak. Check out the albums:

just as a whole, the worst headliners Bonnaroo has ever put together.
As a WHOLE.
Pearl Jam is fvcking great, one of the top 3 headliners Bonnaroo has ever had. (Biggest Draw/Wow factor.)
1. Radiohead 2. Neil Young and Crazy Horse 2. The Dead 3. Pearl Jam
Bottom 3 (Ahhh, Shlt!!/Bummer factor)
1. Jacks Johnsons (cant really see any other headliners that I say "bummer, man"
Jack Johnson's set will likely be a big party on stage closing out the festival. I think there will be lots of guests collaborating with him. I hope so, anyway, because if it's just him and an acoustic guitar for 3 hours I'll probably head back to the camp after about 30 minutes.

Dude, I am all-on-board with a Phish reunion. I think it may happen one day, but I don't think there's a chance it will be at Bonnaroo this year. But I'm with ya.

spot on. Honestly, If you aren't expecting this, I don't know what to tell you. I have been expecting such since they announced the lineup and he was listed 3rd.
Anyone remember Panic Sunday night 2005?
I really can't imagine any other way Jack Johnson fills a headline slot to close out a festival as big as Bonnaroo.
