For me the overall best shows I have seen in a LONG time were Flaming Lips and Tool at Bonnaroo last year. Everything about both of them just blew me away.
Nothing beats Tools light show from last year. I didnt see them at Bonnaroo but I saw them twice during their tour and my mind was blown both times (espeacilly during Wings for Marie/10,000 Days.)
Also if you guys want a good representation of NINs light show check out the "Beside you in time" DVD. It makes me weep that I missed NIN on their last tour.
I saw the lips for the first time on New Years in OKC. They gave everyone laser pointers and had like 5000 huge man size balloons. Best show I've ever seen!

I got to help blow up those balloons at that show. Great live show.
i think metallica will pull off a great show this year. Last time i seen them was in 97 and that was a great show. Their whole stage collapsed on them and it looked very realistic. people were swinging from ropes and big towers were coming down. there was smoke and fire and all kinds of crazy $hit going on, and all of a sudden everything just went black in the arena...then a few seconds later, a single light bulb comes floating down from the ceiling right above kirk's or james' head (i can't remember which one it was) and he starts playing 'battery.' After that 3 more lights light up and reveals everyone in the band and they start f&cking up some battery.

How did you manage that?
Oh, and I concur. Flaming Lips put on the best SHOW. KISS also puts on a great show.
Just in the right place at the right time. Our group met a roadie and they needed help blowing them up.
The Metallica show that the guy above was talking about can be found on their "Cunning Stunts" DVD.
I'm sure they didn't NEED help, but roadies being roadies, they were completely willing to take some free help ;D
And I was completely willing to help, take the backstage pass off their hands, and dance on stage during the show in an inflatable Santa costume. Sounds like an even trade.
Chris Kuroda is THE lighting master. He was the 5th member of Phish.
i agree... the 2004 Vegas shows he got sick and they called in Fenton Williams from the Dave Matthews Band...
i know some people that made those shows and said Fenton did a fantastic job on lights... i've always liked the DMB light shows, but when i'm at a dave show, i'm not looking at the lights always...
The best live band I've ever seen would have to be The Flaming Lips. Visually, the best show I've seen was Muse at ACL in 2007. They played there in 2006, but their 2007 set was extremely well done (headliner slot). For being sober during the show, I felt like I was on mind altering substances.

I'm no Lips fan, so I think I'd rather take the pay cheque or save my breath. But if you're into them, then yeah, that definitely sounds like a pretty fair trade

did anyone else get bored and leave the lips last year? Cause I went and saw mule and that was one of the best decisions I've made.
I stopped by the Lips on my way to Mule from the HipHop extravaganza. Caught some of Moonlight Mile and headed on. Yes, they are visually freakdiculous. But the Mule oozes substance. Also caught several tunes by a funk band called the Dynamites or Midnites or something between Lips/Mule. High charged energy in the Troo music lounge.
But the best MARRIAGE of visuals and substance has to be MMJ for me. Not necessarily over the top, but right on time. And creative. Even during the daylight hours as evidenced by their afternoon Which Stage performance of 06 !
Actually, Bonnaroo late nights- ANY OF THEM- win. Just now remembering the Dr. John chicanery and the Rebirth Brass Band on the float between sets !

Should have done the same thing... but my friends had to get RIGHT UP FRONT for Flips, so when I wanted to leave, I had to wade through a massive sea of people... that show was really not that good at all. Thank god I got to see Gov't Mule perform for the little bit, kinda made up for the bad decision that was going to Flips.

Lips just fell so far below my expectations...Sure the visuals were sweet, but there was just something missing. Anyways, I got in the mule tent in the middle of the Moby Dick drum solo as they brought out John Paul Jones. It was incredible.

^Substance, that what was missing.
Substance = Musical talent. Good studio artists, but musically their live show just isn't up to snuff, especially at bonnaroo, and especially when they're up against Mule with a crapload of guests.

I agree with all of those who've mention Pearl Jam. The Drive-By Truckers bring the heat as well. Although, both are fairly minimalist with the lights.
also, Gogol Bordello won't make you trip your brains out, but they've got a bunch of crazy a$$ stuff going on to overwhelm you during their show.

Pearl Jam and Gogol Bordello are two bands that could play with plain white lights on them the entire time and still put on an equally as entertaining show as they would have with crazy lights. Pearl Jam because they are so into what they are playing that you can't help but be drawn into it. Gogol more because, like you said, there's so much crazy shit happening on stage. Eugene Hutz is one of the best frontmen you could ever want to see perform.
I know that this poster really wanted info on bands that will be at Roo this year, but I must say that the all time greatest stage presentation/lightshow has to go, hands down, to Daft Punk. If you've seen them over the past 2 years, you'll have to agree with me that the spectacle they put on outshines even the Flaming Lips!

I have just gotten into them and haven't had the chance to see them. However, that is quite a strong statement you made about being better than the Lips, so I hope to see Daft Punk soon.
