When i read these boards, i see many posts saying "everyone thought tool fans were gonna ruin bonnaroo and nothing bad happened". but the violent people around me were tool fans and only there for tool (which they admitted). I feel that this is a real concern and that people on these boards should know that it did and does happen..
Im not trying to scare anybody or anything like that, but I do worry about some of the fans.
As someone who has been going to Metallica shows since 1985, (Ive posted some other stuff earlier in this thread)...yes there are some drunk folks here and there, but I see that at any concert I go to...the raging crazy stuff isnt the fan element at a Metallica show anymore. Yes, some of the stuff in the 80's got a bit crazy, but that didnt just apply to a Metallica show either. Many of the fns now are 30,40's who bring their kids or just want to get into the vibe and appreciate the fact they are alive and well, and playing music because their hearts are into it. Any big Metallica fan going to Bonnaroo hasnt seen them stateside since '05 (and that was a short set opening special for the Stones). I've seen several shows in Europe the last few years; but I'm pleased they were invited, the band is excited to be playing the style of festival they play in Europe all the time. They're playing a bunch of European dates again this summer as well. Anytime you have a large group of people together, you may seem stupid things but in no way are you going to see packs of Metallica fans looking to be violent. The band doesnt stand for violence and 99% of the folks Ive observed at their shows dont either. I respect your concerns, but I think alot of people are going to be suprised that things will be ok, and they may even appreciate the performance they put on.
And yes, paying $250 or getting VIP tickets will bring in folks that just want to see them play, and see some other cool acts. This will be my first time attending, and I'm excited to see all the diverse bands, the comics etc. I cant wait.
On Metallica's message board it shows them doing a short tour mostly in the south for the month of June. Don't you think most of the people that only want to see Metallica will go to those shows and leave Bonnaroo to the fans that truly want the whole Bonnaroo experience?
on the official tour dates page on the metallica site, it says they are playing in europe before and after roo. they are actually leaving their european tour, playing here, and then flying back. they havnt toured in the united states for a few years and as of right now i dont think there are any plans of that yet.
I believe that cupcake has accidently read the Metallica tour dates wrong. They do come to Bonnaroo straight from Europe however they do not go back to Europe untill the middle of July not June. I do not know whether or not they will use this time to tour the USA however they do have dates available in the tour schedule.

and to play a little devil's advocate, some people were saying they wanted GWAR, what do you think that show would be like?? although granted they obviously wouldn't be a headliner.

i see, i must have read that wrong... i mean i guess it's possible that they may have a mini tour in the south during the end of june/beginning of july, anything is possible... but as of right now nothing official has been released

Does anyone here have any experience with mosh pits or slam-dancing? I've done it before, it's really not as bad as it looks. Noone hurts anyone, unless someone gets out of hand and hits someone else too hard. I guess it can be compared to play fighting which sometimes can lead to the real thing.
The important thing about slam-dancing is to keep a smile on your face, never make eye contact with a fellow slam dancer with a mean "I'm gonna kick your ass" look.

Put yourself in a Metallica fans shoes. Now, would YOU goto a hippie festival, that will ultimately force you to stay for 4 days, and see a ton of bands that YOU don't like? Seriously, any of these hardcore Metallica fans (which cupcake summed up, are pretty much heading up the senior ladder) won't go to Bonnaroo just to see them. Tool was different because alot of their fanbase is still young and willing to go through Bonnaroo to see them.
Through my personal experiences (I live in a town where Metal music dominates the local scene), I've found that none of those metalheads will head to the farm just to see Metallica. Now, if B.L.S. was there, we'd be up sheets creek without a paddle. Bottom line, I think the "typical Rooers" will dominate the crowd, with the Metallica fanbase that everyone is so worried about being one of the smaller minorities. I think you'll see less hardcore Metallica fans this year than you saw hardcore Tool fans last year.

There is much sound logic in your argument. I checked out the Metallica MB and there was very little discussion on Bonnaroo. I don't think there will be many fans at 'Roo just to see Metallica.
i was one of the people who didnt want metallica at roo at all, now seeing everyone cry about them being there makes me hope they deliver the best show all weekend
Everyone will have a blast. Trust me. I'll place a guarantee: If everyone agrees metallica sucked, ruined everything, or whatever, you guys can find me a chop my dick off.
i will go ahead and say it, when i am in a place like bonnaroo where in the past i could be free among the nicest people and enjoy myself... i am terrified of metal heads.

I felt really sick to my stomach when I saw the lineup with Metallica on it. I was a fan once, but hadn't been in years. However as part of my prep for Roo I've been breaking my older Metallica out and listening to it. I stil can't listen to St. Anger but Ride the Lightning and Kill'em All are reminding me why I once thought they were great. Honestly my biggest bitch with them was the way they treated Jason Newstead.
My original plans were to sit in my camp for Metallica but now I think I'll be right there near the front. I can hear the music better, see the band and who knows , maybe I can give Hetfield the finger.
Fuck it it's Bonnaroo, no band experience will suck there!
I've gone to many metal concerts. REAL Metal concerts. Not to say that Metallica isnt really Metal, but come on, there is much more aggressive stuff out there.
I've been to 4 Ozzfests, as well as countless local shows and a bunch of bigger metal shows before too. I'm a little guy. Something like 5'5" I've moshed countless times (real moshing, not the flailing your arms in the air like an untrained karate kid stuff that nu-hardcore kids do). And I'll tell you, I've had fun every single time and never gotten hurt. Generally no one ever gets hurt. If someone does fall on the ground, there always an entire family of people around them to pick them back up, even at the most brutal concerts. Not to say anything close to this will be at Bonnaroo. But everyone should just relax. A lot of folks take the energy from certain music and dance. Consider moshing a more aggressive form of dancing. Aggressive doesn't make it better or worse, just different. Some people may be into it, some people may not.
Thats not even the point of what I was going to say...umm... yeah anyway, I've been to countless concerts, including a lot of metal. Are there drunken idiots at metal concerts? Absolutely. Are there drunken idiots at country concerts? rap concerts? classic rock concerts? jam band concerts? Absolutely. Generally, surprisingly or not, I find the most drunken idiots not at metal concerts but at country shows. Does that mean that Willie Nelson or Pat Green shouldn't be at Bonnaroo? Of course not.
Bonnaroo had drunken idiots before Metallica. Bonnaroo will have drunken idiots after Metallica. People got carried away before Metallica. People will get carried away after Metallica. It happens when you have 100,000 people on a farm. There are festivals all the time in Europe that are 80,000+ that have bands far heavier than Metallica playing. I'm sure there are drunken idiots there too, but the festivals are still fantastic to those that just want to enjoy the music and the festival atmosphere. Metallica has played these European festivals before. There hasn't been virgin sacrifices or thousand-person stampedes that kill teenage girls or anything like that. People go for a good time. I'm assuming thats what people go to Bonnaroo for too, right?
I've said it before, and I know some of you hate hearing this, but Bonnaroo is no longer a straight jam and roots festival anymore. It's a huge, all-encompassing multi-genre music festival. Metal is a genre of music, and Superfly has shown that they acknowledge that this year, with three metal bands on the lineup.
Compare that with Hip Hop, Bluegrass, Folk, Jam Bands, Indie Rock, Electronica, etc and you'll see that it's still very much balanced. This is a festival for REAL music fans. Not just jam band fans or bluegrass fans or indie fans.
Overall what I'm trying to say is, Metallica fans are music fans too and no more threatening than O.A.R. fans or Willie Nelson fans or M.I.A. fans.
And don't even think about calling me ignorant towards certain types of music. I'm actually looking forward to Mastodon. And they never put out Load, Reload, Garage Inc., St. Anger, etc.
