Funktopus: I agree, with one exception. I don't think you can single out the jam fans for being narrowminded in who's an acceptable headliner. I think in every genre you have the people who say "my music good/your music bad."
But on the negativity issue, I'm tired of it too. You don't have to like every band. You shouldn't expect to enjoy every band. I've said in other threads, if you can throw a better festival, have at it. But until then, don't expect one that mirrors your precise musical tastes. And if you're not going to explore new things, you're missing the best part of Roo.
This will be my third year in a row and I havent looked foward to any of the Top 3 headliners more than I am looking foward to Metallica. Im pretty sure Ill dance more at that show than I ever have for a show at Roo.

How in the hell do you dance to Metallica?
The same way you dance to Tool and Clutch, and perhaps even Umphrey's.

HAHAHAHA! If i get punched in the face this year at bonnaroo.. i'm going home, crying.
If i randomly got punched in the face i think my head would explode from the rage induced. This is the reason i don't let my friend convince me in joining him to a hardcore show, that and most of the bands suck.
i was very dissapointed, but then realized that it they'll probly rock pretty hard, give some masters of puppetts and and justice for all stuff and be a fun change. overall this lineup rocks and i cant wait until i pull into the farm and get my face rocked off by metallica

as bonnaroo comes more diverse, for better or for worse depending on music tastes, all the jam fans are going to stop going to roo every year. theres so many other great options right now to see a good, to the roots festival with an awesome atmosphere. a new crowd will definitely be noticeable even as it was last year. 10k or bust.
Stop hating Metallica, they’re good musicians. Their recent set lists are 95% classic material anyways. Diversity should be accepted, especially at Bonnaroo. We have a chance to see what they can bring musically and I’m sure most will not be disappointed!!
Good musicians is extremely arguable. The 80s stuff would be awesome if it was the 80s band playing it. But Lars and Kirk are two of the sloppiest musicians to ever make it big, especially these days.

Name 10 guitarists that are still living and playing that you think are better than Kirk.
Honestly fellas... Hate on Metallica all you want, but don't disregard their talent. They are obviously very talented musicians...
why the hell can't I stay away from this part of the boards like I keep saying I will... it's like a void that just traps you in...
I'm pretty sick of the bashing/negative attitude that has been brought to the board over the last few weeks RE:Metallic and the lineup in general. This board used to be fun to read.

im converted. simply putting them on the lineup has made me gone from "nooo fuck metallica thats the one show i wont go to" to "fuck yeah i am gonna see metallica at bonnaroo!"
enough putting them down, embrace everyone at bonnaroo, acts and audience alike!!!
I would classify the music I listen to the most as "jam band". I am in a band that could be considered a jam band. However, since 2003 I've been going to Bonnaroo for the diverse music, not just for the jam bands. I was kinda iffy about Metallica headlining, but hell, I used to love their 80's stuff and still do when I happen upon it. So I am pretty stoked to see them. I would never go to a Metallica show, but since the show is being brought to me on the farm I'm ready to embrace it.
To me this is the best lineup top to bottom, even with Jack Johnson's snoozefest closing the festival out, that Bonnaroo has had to date, I'm a little tired already of reading about how bad it is.

Can someone please tell me where the hell Metallica said they have an anti taping stance. The band thrives on taping. they did an entire tour with a tapers section right in the middle of the damn stage!!!! They are not anti taping. They may be against people downloading their music illegaly (which is a legitimate argument) but as far as taping goes, they are all for it.

have you seen them lately? Kirk cant even play his own solos anymore, if he ever could. I actually used to like Metallica, but as a musician, its easy to see how bad theyve gotten.
ten better? Frisell, Scofield, Stern, Metheny, Ribot, Madof, Belew, Haynes, Trucks, Abercrombie, Knopfler, Haque, Herring, Martino, i could go on all day. Kirk was always the weakest part of the band.

Karma for making a list before I did. And for sticking to your guns. I agree, Kirk's guitar work is not top notch.

Wrong. Mustaine helped write maybe 6 songs but the majority of the songwriting was Hetfield/ Ulrich. I have been a Metallica fan for about 20 years now. I have seen them over 15 times. I have read the books, seen the docs, lived and breathed the band for a period of my life. Please people, get your facts right before you post.

Mustaine didn't write as much as people think. He got kicked out before recording even started for Kill Em All, correct?

Those are 6 important songs though. And all of the Kill Em All solos and the RTL solo are based on the ones Dave wrote.

Metallica's breakthrough album was really Master of Puppets anyways, and he had nothing to do with that. I think Mustaine is just salty for getting the boot.

That's pretty much it. The band were crashing on Anthrax's floor in NY and recording was about to begin and they woke Mustaine up and told him to take a bus back to LA from NY.
