I feel like when you are thinking about headliners for Bonnaroo, you've gotta think about where the same band would play outside of Bonnaroo....the headliner needs to be a stadium act....as in 60,000-90,000 tickets sold in each city they play in.
While some of the suggested acts fit the bill....a lot are just ridiculous when you think in these (realistic) terms....
Primus...they play 5,000 seat clubs/theatres for the most part.
BB King- When he's not with Clapton he plays 1,000 seaters...like the BB King Blues club in Times Square.
My Morning Jacket- 3,000 seats and under.
All of these acts would/will/have been great at Bonnaroo....but as possible headliners, NO WAY.
MMJ played to at least 30,000 people at Lollapalooza last year. It was absolutely packed.
I had to sit WAY WAY in the back. And Primus played before the headliner Weezer in 2005 at Lolla a fest where their following would be much smaller than 'roo.
Using NYC as an example...which isn't a great example because a lot of bands sell a lot more tickets here than they do elsewhere in the country....
The Police sold more than a quarter million tickets (250,000) here over multiple nights at MSG and Giants Stadium.
My Morning Jacket sold 3,000 at Roseland.
They're great...they're just not Bonnaroo mainstage headliner material! I mean the White Stripes are WAY bigger than MMJ and they didn't even headline.
MMJ was pretty impressive at Lolla when they played with the Youth Orchestra. There were def people lining up already to see Pearl Jam (who disappointed the hell out of me since they were going through the motions. I walked out!).

Any "reunion" show is automatically gonna sell more than a band like MMJ. Hell, honestly I bet even a spice girls reunion show could attract more people than the 3,000 MMJ got at Roseland.
To me, I feel like a MMJ headliner would almost be like an ode to the Roo faithful. It'd be like Superfly saying "OK, we see you peeps that are gonna come no matter who our headliners are... and we know you all wanna have fun, so here ya go!"
Not saying this is very likely, but I'd be a big fan if it did.

I am with you. I doubt they will headline, but I do think they're gaining steam, and eventually, EVENTUALLY, there are going to have to be some NEW headline quality bands. Otherwise, we'll run out.
I've always said that I think Arcade Fire and My Morning Jacket are the next in line to be able to headline.

You have a point....but still.... Panic did 40,000 last time through and Tool did close to 100,000 over 4 nights at 4 venues....neither was reuninting....and both did a hell of a lot more than MMJ's 3,000.

yeah but what's popular in one place isn't necessarily what's popular at Bonnaroo. The one time I've seen Disco Biscuits and the two times I've seen Umphrey's they played to maybe 50-100 people. And obviously they aren't headliners, but they sure as hell don't play to a mere 100 people at Roo.
well, you ask me why i'm drunk all the time it levels my head and eases my mind i just walk along and stroll and sing i see better days and i do better things
Is David Bowie a real option for this year? Because I think that would be pretty sweet/.
Probably not. His camp denied Coachella rumors already and further said that he wasn't planning on touring in the immediate future but that he'd let people know when it was time. I get the sense that if he played a festival, it would be his own in NYC.
When we throw around names like Bowie, Prince, Stevie Wonder or Bruce Springsteen, it's more wishful thinking than based in actual fact. None of the guys have connections with AC/Superfly. None of them really play festivals. All of them are amazing and would make great headliners. So we keep on wishing...
Going back to the initial post, I think that Dave Grohl got linked to the Queen reunion because he co-drummed for them at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and some VH1 Honors special. (Their original drummer is still with them.) Grohl would be a great Artist in Residence if they ever brought that back because he really seems to enjoy sitting in. I'm not sure how much of an individual stamp he can leave as a guest artist, though.
MMJ would be a great artist to use as a first-ever Thursday headliner. It would be a shame to have them done on Thursday, though.
As far as female headliners go, it's tough because there aren't a lot of female rock/roots artists around anymore. Not ones that are playing arenas, anyways. The closest to a Roo headliner out there may be Dixie Chicks and there are a lot of haters out there for them. Tori Amos, Bonnie Raitt, Ani DiFranco and Lucinda Williams are playing theatres and some smaller sheds but I don't think that any of them are likely "headliners" (and Bonnie and Ani's prior Roo slots bare that out, I think). Bjork pops up as a potential artist from time to time but her stateside appearances are sporatic at best and she seems more likely to be a Which headliner. That said, I'd like to see Roo nurture some more female artists as they have with Umphrey's, Disco Biscuits and MMJ. They rarely even have female artists play more than once (Gillian Welch being the only exception I can think of).
Man, Roo has really raised the bar on our "headliner" expectations, huh? If there isn't one larger-than-life headliner I think that the disappointment will be palpable. I wouldn't really hate it if they brought it back a bit more down to earth. MMJ (Thu), Pearl Jam (Fri), DMB (Sat) and Phil & Friends (Sun) would be cool with me.

after reading all the speculations and whatnot and no offense to anyone's preferences, but why does the headliner have to be a reunion-y type of band? i'm personally not interested in a lz/kinks/queen/who/bread/cream/beatles/etc. reunion show. is it required that the age of a headliner member is no less than 50, 55, 60? i'd rather see something relatively new and fresh.
sorry if i sound cranky, but it's just because i am.
i agree 200%. other than clapton, bowie, or neil young i could care less if i see a reunion show because i have all the albums and they sound better when they recorded it then when they are 100 years old, other than neil young who is comparable to a god and hopefully wont ever die.

Oh, and Allman Brothers could definitly headline Sunday night and they definitly deserve to closeout Bonnaroo. IMO.
But then again, I think Primus would be a hell-of-a headliner...soo..
MMJ are definitly worthy of a pre-headline spot...But I wouldnt complain if they Headlined. I could definitly see them doing a thursday headline for all the Roo' faithful. But realistically, I see them in Ben Harper's spot last year, or maybe even where the White Stripes were Sunday afterevening
PS- anyone hear anything about some P-Funk? That could be sweet if Pearl Jam Headlined aswell, just because I know they sometimes cover "Maggot Brain"...

What about Willie?! i mean if it was for carpel tunnel he would have been there a few years back, and what about other big country acts? I know nobody wants this to turn into jamboree in the hills or nothing and i'm not a giant country music fan but i def. appreciate the music, and If there was a reputable country music act to headline I would def give them a chance. you guys can blast me for bringing up country but country concerts sell out stadiums in hours and was trying to think of a band that could do it who was not a classic rock band.
No, I'm with you. Especially with the Coachella folks now running Stagecoach, I suspect SuperFly/AC will look to get a piece of that action as well. Unfortunately, a lot of the country artists are more pop acts with a bit of an earthiness to them. I'd love to see Willie and Kris do a set. Bring Shooter back, too. I like that Pat Green will be there, at least.

Neil is one of THE best musicians ever.
I would love for him to be at Roo'. I've never seen him. I love the acoustic stuff. But I would love to hear an electric set complete with; Down by the river, fuckin' up, Like a Hurricane, On the beach, Cortez the killer, When you dance, goin' home, Tonight's the night, and anything else...
