I agree but I see art with a very broad definition. No matter how constrictive an assignment or commission is the artist will make it his own. Every mark an artist makes is his own. Whether its a master or a housewife in her kitchen scrapbooking.
Now if there's a discussion about art versus craft that's a whole other kettle of fish.
and everything an artist does makes him/her more proficient. Art is an exploration... a process.
I see your point. I'm not sure I'm absolutely convinced, but I definitely see your point!
I think when you said you see art with a very broad definition, you hit the nail on the head. It really is a matter of how broadly or narrowly you want to define art. I think I have just been defining it more narrowly.
This is not to say that I don't see merit in the things that I am saying are not art. I'm just saying that they are outside of my definition of art.
Were DaVinci sketches art? What about the doodles of Picasso? What about MY doodles? What about children's art? Is it about quality? or motivation?
(entire classes are taught on this BTW)
Interesting questions. . . but I think we may be getting a bit off topic, so I made a new thread in the Other Tent to answer them! (Not that I have much of an answer for any of them!)
"When you hear a Stooges track or a Buzzcocks track or a Ramones track or a track by the Fall, or what have you, in a car ad, some people, whenever that happens, I get a letter saying "What a sellout." And I say "no man, we've arrived." The person making that ad grew up on that music. You're no longer confined to interstitial, instrumental music, you're gonna get Iggy Pop and the Teddy Bears singing I'm a punk rocker to sell a car. What would you rather hear? Some wanky keyboard or Iggy and the Teddy Bears? I know which one I'd rather hear, and I just hope they get paid quickly and double scale, because it's about time. "
Henry has always felt the artist should get paid. And I agree. They have to make the cash somewhere because it ain't coming from CD sales anymore. BUT smite me if you must, I can not feel the same way about a song after it is used to shill a product. I love American Bang and their song Move to the Music. But now it is everywhere, from Verizon to the ABC theme song. Tired of hearing it
i havent watched commercials in a few years. the last time was thanksgiving - when we were at my girlfriends parents house. it was PAINFUL watching all that drek.
i do remember hearing rev horton heat's "eat steak" used in a boston market radio ad - and it was awesome! however, i agree with your point - "like a rock' will forever be about a truck.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
The great Italian Renaissance artists essentially created their masterpieces as monuments to the greatness of their patrons. I don't see how this is all that different...
