Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
the schedule says they are playing 2 1/2 hr. knowing that kliph had said that the last bonnaroo was their longest show ever at around 2 hr. and that they would never play longer than that, i asked him if this was false advertising?
quote: Originally posted by racefortheprize: so kliph, turns out you are playing outside instead of tent at roo. also it has flips listed for 2 1/2 hr. is that false advertising?
I would think so. I seriously don't see us playing for 2 1/2 hours. 2, maybe. But, then again, I don't know for sure, because we haven't sat down and figured out exactly what we're going to do for Bonnaroo yet. But, yeah, I wouldn't be expecting a 2 1/2 hour set from us.
Hmm, they haven't worked out their set yet eh? How sweet would it be to see some Lips classics performed? As sweet as their live show is, they have been sticking to (more or less) the same set for the last year or two, and haven't really strayed from that since their last Roo apperance. Maybe us Roo-ers will be treated to some gems from the Clouds Taste Metallic-era, or maybe going way back for some Rainin' Babies? Unconsciously Screamin'? Mountainside? Someone with telekinetic powers please put these thoughts in Wayne's head.

Since the Lips' setlist and show really hasn't changed much in the past few years I expect to try to catch the spaceship opening but then go check out other shows. After their Langerado throwdown this spring, I expect the Galactic extravaganza to be pretty wild.

Why is 2 hours reasonable though? With the song catalog that the Flips have, why can't 2 and a half hours be reasonable? This is a friggin late night set at Bonnaroo, I'm sure they could break out the big guns for it, it sounds like they just don't want to.
What happens if my tee shot lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it in the hole? Is that still a hole in one? 'Cause that's how I'm gonna play it.

Whether its 2 hours or 2 1/2 hours, I'm going to have a blast anyway!
Exactly, they dont need to play 3 hours for it to be a sweet show, and i think they know this. I think the only reason they put it as 2 1/2 on the schedule is because all of the other big latenight sets are like 3 1/2, and they'll probably go even longer.

ive never seen these guys but definitely want to check em out this year. do they always bust out the spaceship? if so do they do it along with a certain song, early in show, late in show? would really like to check this out if I can then maybe go see what else is happening. so much going on that night!
the encore at Bonnaroo 03 was the highlight for me last time they played and it's the Lips, the show is going to be great regardless and if it's a little short there are plenty of bands to see sat. night

Hi - just curious. Why is Wayne "very much" against playing longer than 90 minutes? That bums me out. I so often wish shows were longer.
But what do i know. Right?
Very much is a bit excessive. He just thinks that people are going to start getting bored after 90 or so minutes and he doesn't want to ask for too much of the audience's time.
Even them playing a 2 hour set is 45 minutes more than any other time that I have seen them. Although it is a slight bummer that we are not getting the Lips for 2.5 hours, we are still probably going to witness one of their all time great sets.
And then that leaves me more time to check out the Galactic craziness. Maybe with the Lips ending at 2, I might get 1.5 hours of Galatic, and you really can't beat that.

i would kill to see a flaming lips show where they jam i dont think i could get bored
Thats the problem with them having a long show, they arent exactly the best musicians, so them jamming probably isnt something you want to hear. Not trying to hate on them, but they know what their niche is, and stick to it, wisely. Because of this they put on great shows, but musical improvisation isnt their niche.

Just like with artists playing past their allotted late night time, it's not uncommon for artists to play less than that. The Mars Volta '05 show was legendary, but they were scheduled for 2 1/2 hours and only played for 1 1/2.
First of all. The Flaming Lips don't go on late. Wayne's always been very concerned about being on time. Second of all a 2 hour Flaming Lips show would still be just as amazing as a 2.5 hour Lips show. With this band I don't think 30 minutes is going to make much of a difference. Anyways there shows tend to draw a TON of energy from you anyways. This just means that I'll have more energy and time to go check out Sasha and Digweed. No worries about the Lips length. There my favorite band right now and I could honestly be satisfied if they only played for an hour and half. Another thing too, Wayne also like to keep his sets short but very very sweet. And won't come back out if you beg him. I've been at shows where the crowd literally was chanting and stomping and screaming for a second encore for about 30 minutes and nobody would accept the fact they weren't coming back even though the bouncers were trying to clear the crowd and the lights were on.
"Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man's original virtue. It is through disobedience and rebellion that progress has been made." Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900), The Soul of Man Under Socialism
"You're either on the bus or off the bus." Ken Kesey
"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." Hunter S. Thompson
I personally think many of you may be a bit spoiled by your jam bands. Not every band needs to play for 3+ hours. I've been to many many concerts in my life (not many [okay, any] in the real "jam band" scene) and only one band/artist has ever reached a 2 1/2 hour set and that was The Eagles. For most bands not in the jam band world, I'd say about 90 to 105 minutes is about right. 2-2 1/2 hours is a pretty long show. Any longer than that and you're talking about a Tolstoy novel of a set. Not to say that longer sets arent great or anything but if you're talking about your basic set you know.....2 hours is a pretty long time.
I'd be more than happy with a two hour lips set. This makes it alot easier to go see others on Saturday night. Keep in mind, when it comes to live music it's the quality of the time not quantity.

Chandler has a point, a lot of bands dont even play two hour sets. I'd like to see a longer show, but how can you expect them to just keep it going. Takes a lot out of ya to play like that, especial y the lips since they put on such energetic shows.
yeah. ive been banking on the FLips to end around 2/2:30ish just so i can partake in some of the craziness going down on saturday night. mule, galactic, sasha&digweed. its gonna be nuts. all following the FLips though.

The Lips are gonna do it up big time. I bet they have some suprises in store for us. I hope they have the big bunny......I'm sure all the characters will be there! It's going to be a real trippy time.....even sober....LOL

It could also depend largely on the vibe from the crowd. If a lot of people leave after 2 hours to go check out Galactic or other shows (which it seems a lot of people plan on doing) then they probably won't even feel the need to put in an extra half hour.
I'd actually prefer a 2 hour set, because then it'll give me more time to check out other shows that definitely are gonna last longer, and like others said... 30 minutes will not make or break a Flips show.
Since the Lips' setlist and show really hasn't changed much in the past few years I expect to try to catch the spaceship opening but then go check out other shows. After their Langerado throwdown this spring, I expect the Galactic extravaganza to be pretty wild.
You know, that makes sense. I've been pissed that I'm gonna miss Gift of Gab, but I don't have too. I've seen the same lips show twice already.

Unfortunatly that's not neccessarily true. I saw them at Coachella, and it was the first time they did the bubble. It took him 20 minutes of set time to inflate the damn thing. Then they where backed up to the Cure, and only got to play 4 songs. This shouldn't be a problem here, being that the stage is free for 3 hours before there set time.
