2006 - Bright Eyes bringing up Jim James, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Toubab Krewe Thursday Night, Jackie Green Early afternoon, and everyone late night from the most epic concert I've seen up cloise MY MORNING JACKEt, to a late night, late night SASHA RAVE.
I've seen epic concerts for the last six years......Bonnaroo has instilled passion in me.
98 percent of the bands are better then you expect!
your roo's are running together gillian welch was in 04 ;D
as far as I can remember, she was still brought up on stage during bright eyes in 06.
05 was my only bonnaroo. we were surprised by the first band we saw, rose hill drive. the black crowes were better than i thought they would be. also mmj and modest mouse.

why were you up front for the streets if you weren't expecting much? seems like there would be somewhere else to be if that was the case, not camping out for a band i didn't like
I didnt say I didn't like them, cause I definitely am a fan. I had just heard from a few different people before Bonnaroo, that the Streets live show just wasnt that good. I just didn't want to go into it with high expectations only to be let down, but it ended up being one of my favorite shows of the weekend.
What happens if my tee shot lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it in the hole? Is that still a hole in one? 'Cause that's how I'm gonna play it.

the streets started a hell of a sunday for me and the gang last year. in fact, i might say that sunday was wayyyyy better than i thought it was going to be.
Streets>matisyahu(shortlived)>moe.>phil with a nice little shopping list of 'treats' to go with em all.
mmj last year set me off on the band. matisyahu was better than i thought previously neil young was epic.... he never really extends his songs too much according to the fans on his message boards... at bonnaroo all of the songs were jammed out. toubab krewe was bumping didnt know too much about wilco before bonnaroo...love them now etc, etc.
ps. i enjoyed beck, but listening back to it on cd is less than impressive... especially compared to the austin city limits disc that i have.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this

2006 - The Matt Costa set on Thursday night blew me away. I had his cd and listened to it quite a bit, really digged his studio stuff, but when I saw him live...holy hell!! That kid can jam! Turned me into a believer.

2002 - Drums and Tuba: Checked them out based only on their name (My roommate then was tuba player, and I promised I'd let him know how they were). Their set blew me away. They sounded like nothing else at Roo, before or since. It's a shame their live show has gone downhill over the last few years.
2003 - The Flaming Lips: I'd loved their albums for a long time, but I had no idea what a specticle they'd become. I could not stop smiling from begining to end.
2004 - Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra (Day show): This was the perfect way to start a day at Roo. I had heard a lot of these guys' music from friends who were big into J-music and ska. I knew it would be good, but when the keyboardist started rocking all over stage with his keyboard (not a keytar or even strapped to him, just juming around holding it and playing) I knew I had made a mistake missing their late-night set the night before.
2005 - Dr. Dog: I went based soly on the song Wake Up that was on their website at the time. I was glad they closed their set w/ it. Probly the least-crowded show I've ever been to at Roo. The rest of the fest did not know what they were missing. I will definatly be front and center for them this year.
2006 - Buddy Guy: This guy (no pun intended) is INSANE. I thought i didn't like electric blues guitar, but I agreed to check him out after friends told me not to miss him. I was not dissapointed. He is now my favorite living guitarist.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
Way Better: Xavier Rudd ('05) -- didn't know anything about him but was walking by and got sucked in for the entire set.
Way Bestest: Dresden Dolls ('06) -- for some reason they were a glam band in my mind (don't know why I was associating them with Hanoi Rocks) but since I'm a sucker for that stuff I dragged myself away from the Superjam to check them out. They were entirely different but put on a really riveting set. I made sure not to miss them at 'Roo later that summer...
2005 - Dr. Dog: I went based soly on the song Wake Up that was on their website at the time. I was glad they closed their set w/ it. Probly the least-crowded show I've ever been to at Roo. I don't know, I thought Karen Ann who played in the same tent that year was a little more sparse. I kinda felt guilty -- there was no way I could leave even if I hated her music. It would have just been really obvious and insulting!
2002 - The Disco Biscuits - Blew the f'ing roof off the tent. Crowd was way pumped up. Great Great set. 2002 - Ben Harper Solo. Can't say I've ever been a huge fan of Ben, but his solo set at Roo was quite amazing. 2003 - The Machine. Unannounced thursday band, Pink Floyd Cover band. Those guys killed it. 2003 - The Flaming Lips. I expected them to be good, but the show definitely exceeded my expectations on the visual front. 2004 - Praxis. Knew the names not the material. One of the best shows at Bonnaroo period. Completely mind-melting. 2004 - My Morning Jacket. This is the set that hooked me on MMJ and I've loved them ever since. 2005 - DJ Krush. I've always like Krush, but seeing him live, the Vortex opened up in front of my eyes. It was a sight to behold. 2005 - Herbie Hancock in the Superjam. I knew Herbie was the superjam going in. What I didn't know was how SICK it would be. 2006 - Brothers Past. My first time seeing them, and they played a day set. I expected it to be light, but they brought it. 2006 - Damian Marley. Welcome to Jamrock had me prepared for the music, but even then, the show was PUMPING. Crowd was eating it up.
What I've learned over the years is that your favorite shows going in, probably won't be your favorite shows going out. There is always always always gonna be one band that grabs you and takes you to that next level. That is, of course, if you allow them to.
Okay, I expected some of these shows too be good and they went above and beyond, and some are smaller that ripped it up.
2002: KDTU Particle OCMS
2003: MMW Flaming Lips YMSB
2004: Primus Praxis Vida Blue w/ Spam Allstars * Peelander Z ( oddest thing I have ever seen on stage, but hilarious)
2005: Jurassic 5 The Word P Groove
2006: Claypool/World Party Radiohead Superjam late night into Sasha late late night, rivals to be my favorite night in Bonnaroo history for me. 7 hours of danky janky Mc Stanky music that I will never forget. ( On the rail for Superjam and 3 rows o' people back for Sasha rippin it up.) ( My face is still melting from that night)
Can't wait to see what '07 will bring. I'm so excited, I just wet myself remembering these phatty moments.

The Secret Machines in 2005. I figured it would be good and I was diggin the debut album but WOW. Way better then I thought it would be. That set turned me into a super fan and that set is easily one of the best sets I ever saw.
Last year I had a suprising amount of fun at Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cat Empire, and Mike Doughty. Dresden Dolls late night surprised me a bit as well.
