I completely agree with you on the variety issue. I think Trey is a great musician and if he ever stopped playing guitar it would be a great loss to us all. But in my opinion, he isn't that great for a 'Roo headliner. Sure you hear some sick solos and he's a great lead player, but in the end it's the same stuff. Regardless of whether or not he plays by himself, with a band, with an orchestra, or whatever, his shows aren't that much different. He'll do some solo stuff and a couple of Phish songs, maybe even an Oysterhead tune, but that's it. To me, Trey is somewhat of a "dinosaur act", like what Pink Floyd is presently. He is capable of filling arenas and main stages because he is "'Roo" or the "Leader of Phish", but I don't think his shows are that impressive, be it Trey, TAB, or TAO. I've seen the other members of Phish and I thought they put on much better shows than Trey did. I went to see a much lower-key Mike and the Duo show the same week as a Trey one, and it was much better than the sold out Trey show I payed twice as much for. This is all just my opinion, but I think not having a headliner spot for Trey isn't that big of a deal. I'm very pleased to see that very obscure (By that I mean obscure to Bonnaroo) acts like Tool and the Police are headliners simply because it is something different. I'm not going to get into how some people think he is a sell out, jerk, etc., my point is he doesn't bring any variety to the table. I know I would have fun if he did headline, but it wouldn't be anything new.
And like I already posted in the last paragraph, this is JUST AN OPINION. No hard feelings, no singling people out, no offending anyone's taste in music, this is just how I feel.
I think the days of Trey headlining Bonnaroo are over, personally. It's just not gonna happen. He's not big enough of a draw in his current outfit. But I think the center of the thread was speculation over whether Page gets added due to his new release and subsequent tour which ends the day Bonnaroo starts.
and also, to the point about Variety, Widespread Panic is headlining this year, and this will be the 6th Headlining Show Panic has played, all be it with their third guitar player in that timespan. So it speaks to the idea that Bonnaroo uses some of the old and mixes it with some of the new.
I personally think Bonnaroo does the "variety" thing better than most fests, which is part of why I keep going back every year.

Agreed. Bonnaroo does do a great job of keeping the line up fresh. Artists like Ornette Coleman still amaze me to be on the list. I was going to touch on the Widespread thing, but I got lazy. I feel the same way about them more than Trey.
For some reason I feel like 'Roo wants Page to do something. Maybe a Vida Blue reunion. How sick would that be?

^ I love Trey. He is one of the best guitar players in the world. He is also one of the few who could still play at an extremely high calibur while he was using. I was simply talking about Variety. I want to see him there just not as a headliner (like Oysterhead or GRAB). I was just refering to lack of originality. Not like he'll be there anyways (at least to my knowledge) but I was just expressing myself.
I've noticed that the Phish fans out there seem a little traumatized by the breakup, Trey's "issues", etc. It seems like there's a hesitancy to talk about them. There are exceptions of course but it seems like it's sore spot for a lot of us.

I never got to see them. *Sigh. I made a HUGE mistake. I had tickets for their summer show in 2003, but I was working at a summer camp in the mountains and hadn't slept more than 4 hours in over three weeks. I was just starting to get really in5o them. I remember going out and buy Live Phish 11, 16, and 19 right after getting my ticket. Anyways, so I get home and my friend calls and ask if I'm still going to go, and if not, if he could buy my ticket. I really wanted to but I was so tired and figured, "What the hell? They'll come back." (I was really unaware of the stuff going on with the members). Course, on that fateful day of May 25th, 2004, tey announced Coventry would be their last date. To top it off their last tour wasn't stopping in Atlanta.
I don't think I'll ever stop kicking my own ass about it.
In '95 I was preggers w/ my 1st. Friends offered me a FREE ticket to see my first dead show at RFK. I figured naw, I'll sit this one out, after all I wouldn't be able to enjoy it like I would've wanted (being all round and very sober) I just figured I'd catch them the next year.
3 weeks later, Jerry died. It's my biggest musical regret. Believe me the kid has heard this story many many times Someday he'll want to go somewhere and the answer will be "NO" simply out of spite. Bwahahahahahaha!
Hey but at least I saw Phish, at Big Cypress. So I've got that.

It sucks. I miss those guys.
i'm actually a huge phish fan, however, i wasn't upset over their breakup. They shouldn't of gotten back together. When they did, it just wasn't the same caliber of music

You know, I've been to a LOT of Phish shows. I'm still a big fan. But I totally agree with this point. It's a tad ironic that part of the draw to "jam bands" is the lack of repitition but if you've seen a couple of TAB shows...the next one isn't all that surprising.
That said, if Trey were at Roo...I'd watch and enjoy it.

Geez, that is terribly unlucky. I would be kicking myself. Have some karma for missing the dead.

But when I think about it, that's when those two bands were on their last legs. Ya know what I'm saying? It could of been MUCH worse. Like if I had a ticket for the Clifford Ball and missed out. Or if you had a ticket to the Cornell show in '73 (I think it was....).

Thanks. It truly does suck... but I have pressed on and tried to make up for it at every opportunity

I used to think the TAB was boring but I saw them at vegoose '06 and I was blown away. I definately think that Trey is on the upswing and that he'll be raging (again) as soon as this probation bs gets figured out.
Well, personally I'm not a huge Phish fan, I can appreciate a song or two but they're not really my thing. Its fine with me if you like Phish, but in my opinion Phish or Trey or any of the other members don't make Bonnaroo. I had a friend who said he wouldn't go simply because "Trey isn't gonna be there"...and I think that's silly. Trey doesn't make Bonnaroo! The other amazing bands do. Keep that in mind...it's still going to be an amazing time.

Yeah, people like that are something else. It isn't called Anastasaroo for a reason. You can't expect the guy to be there every year.
Isnt it kinda like Trey is at Bonnaroo.......he's the one who recommended that the next Bonnaroo should have Tool being that "they are the most psychadelic band ever" Okay maybe not but I believe a Phishless Roo is a good thing
