First off I do not have any intention of offending anyone, I just have to ask a question.
Does it seem like we're only going to get indie additions? I listen to a lot of indie/ alternative rock. I'm really excited that Wilco and Cold War Kids are playing (Where's Arcade Fire!?); however, I just want more variety.
I want to see more reggae (Ziggy's new album doesn't count. Good shows but the music is just aight), and more jazz and hip-hop.
I'll enjoy Bonnaroo regardless of what happens, but additions like Fiction Plane and My Favourite Sons aren't really exciting me. I respect the noticable course Superfly/ AC are taking, by that I mean having no repeat artists in an effort to keep the line-up fresh each year, but I'm just not feeling things right now.
I hope you all don't smite me for this, as I said before I am just expressing how I feel and I have no intention of putting down anyone's taste in music. Any one else feel like I do or am I just being ridiculous?
1) There hasn't been a major indie act substantially rumored to be playing Bonnaroo to my knowledge. 2) The three major additions have been The Roots, Ornette Coleman and El-P. If I'm not mistaken, those are hip/hop and jazz acts. 3) The only indie bands I'm award of that have been added are Favourite Sons. 4) Most of the artists added but not officially confirmed yet have not been really been indie. The only one close to being indie would be Pete Yorn. One of the other unofficially confirmed acts is Dubconscious, a reggae act. 5) The hottest rumor with legs right now is Robert Randolph appearing at Roo.
I would venture a guess that we'll get more hip/hop and jazz in the coming rounds. Not much more, but more. I would be surprised if we get more reggae however considering its sort of a down year for the scene coming off of last year's resurgence.
Just to be clear, I'm not being down on you. I just think given the large amount of big name indie acts in the initial lineup announcement, it's unlikely you're going to get bombarded by a bunch of indie groups in the next rounds. Although I expect one more kind of major indie group to get added for publicity sake.
It's a shame too, cause there was so much momentum last year in reviving the scene. It's just sort of a shallow talent pool right now, you know? But I think overall with last year's success and compliations like Jonny Greenwood's Best of Trojan being released, you're going to see more young musicians take to reggae.

That's true about the reggae thing.

Good point. It's getting to the when new artists take to the stage.
I don't think you are being ridiculous. I like this lineup alot, but I think it is really really top-heavy. Almost too top-heavy. There are some really good bands at the top of the list, but just a few great bands in the bottom half of the list. The additions haven't excited me that much, and I feel like they aren't doing a very good job with additions this year. Every year prior to this we would get additions almost every 3-4 weeks, and they would almost always include a Sonic Youth, Flaming Lips, Trey Anastasio, etc etc. At this time last year we had 4 rounds of additions under the belt, and the 5th round came only a week later than this week. This year we have had only 2 additions to this point. There is alot of obscure music on the Bonnaroo list, I think possibly to the detriment of the list. It almost feels like they are trying so hard to broaden the horizons, that they may be missing out on what initially drew people to Bonnaroo in the first place, alot of the bigger names all gathered together in one place.
This years lineup really does tend to be missing many of the usual suspects. Not that that's a bad thing, and I definitley think Bonnaroo needs to evolve and grow, but the more I compare the list to some previous years, and other festivals around the country, this is the first time since it's inception that I feel like the Roo could possibly be outdone lineup-wise by both Coachella and Lollapallooza.
Only time will tell if that is the truth, and I plan on having a blast at this years Bonnaroo regardless. But you will not find me among those that believe this year is comparing to last year just yet. Last year was far and away the best festival Bonnaroo has put on, and they will need to pull some tricks out of their hat (like last years Superjam) to push this one above and beyond last years festival.
Radiohead>Trey Mike and The Duo last year was really the pinnacle of the 5 years at the fest for me, and I just don't see a day that measures up to that yet. But at least they got DJ Shadow and Sasha/Digweed so there is hope...
And Bonnaroo does have one thing that no other fest can top: The Best Late Nights in the World.
One thing is for sure, Bonnaroo will be amazing, b/c it's an amazing fest with amazing music. NO matter what the lineup looks like now, I can be sure that it will not disappoint us once we are on the farm.

I definitely agree with the "top heavy" analysis, as well as the lack of reggae (it's true about Ziggy... good vibes, but he's overrated).
But we did get such a huge initial list of performers that now instead of getting the full 12 days of Xmas, we've already unwrapped all our gifts.... I just hope to find some Thievery Corporation in my stocking.

To be honest with you, this initial lineup excited me much more than last year's lineup. I mean, yeah, last year, the lineup was absolutely amazing, having Radiohead alone would do that. But this year's just has such a bigger bang for me. I really do think that if you compared last year's lineup and the one that we have currently, you wouldn't find too many more, if any, big names on last year's than there already are on this year's. We got a good lineup going here, anything else, in my opinion, is just icing.
I think if you divide the lineup into fourths (with the top fourth consisting only of headliners), the comparison between '06 and '07 would look something like this: 1 of 4 2006 < 2007 2 of 4 2006 < 2007 3 of 4 2006 > 2007 4 of 4 2006 < 2007
To me, the glaring difference between this year and last year is that 3rd tier. Last year, you had acts with strong name recognition in the bottom center of the bill. A lot of it was just the right time, right place. There was also just a stronger feeling of global reach in last year's lineup. But again, the lineup is not finished yet. The great majority of the additional acts sort of fell into that range of weakness in this year's lineup.

I dont know too much about past roos (this is my first one, and all I have heard were stories about the past ones) but I am really enjoying listening to a lot of these artists that I have never heard of right now. I went and downloaded a lot of the listed bands that I have never heard of and I am getting really excited about some of these. Also with a chance of surprise's in the jam band area every year, I think everyone will be happy about this year. There are always surprises at roo it sounds like and this year it looks like many of the familar names are wanting to surprise fans this year and just blow there minds. I am really excited and any new additions will be fine by me, plus we have Tool playing and I am betting they are going to throw down a set never seen before I hope.
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."

I gotta say, I really dig this lineup, but yeah, some more variety would most definitely be nice. I still have faith that they've got some crazy stuff in the works, something that will leave everyone breathless, but even if that doesn't happen, I'm totally fine with the lineup they've got now. There's already a hell of a lot of great music at Bonnaroo, and, even though more is always great, it will be a fantastic experience no matter what.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

They already do. His name is Ornette Coleman. Don't miss him.
Oh, believe you me, I was not one of the people discounting Ornette. I am pumped like no other to see him. Still, I would be willing to bet there's even more.
