Junior Brown, Sam Roberts and The Hold Steady are definitely worth checking out. I saw the Black Angels last night and they were pretty dull - no stage presence or interaction with the audience. Vietnam opened the show and they were great.
btw - going to see Bettye Lavette & Blind Boys of Alabama on Saturday and Umphrey's Mcgee on Tuesday.

Black Angels played patty cake with 5 audience members in my town, lol just kidding but that would be audience interaction if I knew what that meant at a show. They don't talk to people while playing, they have to concentrate on playing, no sing alongs or win a date with the drummer either.
I know in my heart of hearts that Clutch will put on an awesome show. I'll be there screaming for Prison Planet.
And Gogol Bordello is a must see. If you can't find their music, rent Everything is Illuminated. They do the soundtrack and the vocalist (can't think of his name right now) has a hilarious, supporting role.

I'm a pretty big fan of Dubconscious. They're more of a genre-bending reggae sound as opposed to full on reggae. Along with the roots reggae, they dabble in afrobeat, jazz, and the psychedellec sounds of dub and rock. It's good stuff. If I were going to suggest listening material, start with their album Realization - it is a solid representation of their music and it was recorded live.
I scooped up James Blood Ulmer's newest album the other day, it's called Birthright. It has a deep, delta blues feel to it. His show will definitely be reminiscent of Buddy Guy's, but Ulmer's sound is pretty unique - I'm curious to see how it transcends into a live setting.

Gypsy Punks is probably one of my favorite newer releases in a long time. I'm a punk/ska/reggae guy, and they hit all these genres right on the head. They're real standouts in a genre that's gotten kind of stale.
I am so excited for you. Last year I had no idea who half the bands were, and when I got home I spent about $500 on cd's from band I discovered at 'Roo. My advice, If there's a time slot where you don't recognize any bands, explore centeroo until you find a band that amazes you. I promise that at any given time there is a band playing that will amaze you.
Damnit, that's what I was going to say. I don't care what it conflicts with, I'm going to see those boys. Unless it conflicts with the Black Keys. Then I may have to figure something else out. Either way, both of those band are a "can't miss" for me.
North Mississippi Allstars are awesome too.
EDIT: Oh! I forgot Dr. Dog!! They're new album is one of the best things to come out so far this year.

-The Slip (You may have noticed them on a small video game known as Guitar Hero I... Extra song titled Even Rats, one of my most anticipated songs of Bonnaroo) -Cold War Kids -Dr. Dog
First Off, headinlot, I have to agree with unplugdacusticaz and roolacksreality on Galactic definitely not qualifying for the "smaller act" category, and I'm not even sure I'd put North Mississippi there, but that one's what I call a tweener.
Anyway, my list of smaller must sees.....
Old Crow Medicine Show The Slip Girl Talk Tortoise Junior Brown The Hold Steady John Butler Trio
Richard Thompson Band - RT can pay guitar with the best of them. John Butler Trio - I just like 'em Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys - Legendary banjoman
